The elder “Pitbull” brother revealed on Monday evening that he had undergone a procedure to repair the injury, which was suffered in a split-decision triumph against Ryan Scope at Bellator “Newcastle” on Feb. 9.
“Got out of surgery a couple hours ago. I ruptured a tendon on my wrist in the first round of my last fight. Surgery was a success, but the damage was a bit more complicated than expected,” Freire wrote on Instagram. “It will delay my recovery a little bit, but doctors and I are optimistic I may be able to fight by August. See you guys soon!”
One of the top contenders in Bellator’s lightweight division, Freire is currently on a five-bout winning streak that includes triumphs over Benson Henderson, Josh Thomson and Roger Huerta. The 33-year-old Brazilian previously challenged for 155-pound gold at Bellator 157, where he suffered a first-round knockout loss to Michael Chandler. Chandler will defend his lightweight crown against Patricky’s brother, Patricio Freire, in the Bellator 221 headliner on May 11.
