Devon Brock vs. Khonry Gracie

Round 1

The first round one is one marked by trepidation. Neither Brock nor Gracie seems especially in engaging. Brock slowly stalks toward Gracie, who occasionally flurries with his hands far out of distance. Brock lands his right hand on his circling foe, who continues to gauge the distance. Brock now probes the distance with a leg kick before tackling Gracie to the mat with 90 to go. Gracie frames up a loose triangle, but can’t cinch it before the horn. 10-10.

Round 2

The dynamic of the second round is the same as the first, with Brock trotting forward behind occasional leg kicks, while Gracie circles, avoids, and occasionally launches wild right-handed punches. Brock is beyond patient here, while Gracie seems to have zero interest in engaging. Brock chops with two low kicks. Brock steps right into the pocket and Gracie looks to flurry, but quickly loses his mettle and backs down. Brock lands a right hand on his retreating target, then dumps him on the mat with a power double before the horn. 10-9 Brock.

Round 3

Surprise surprise, in the third and final round, Gracie seems to want no part of any exchanges, circling away from a patient Brock, who continues to simply plod forward and lob low kicks. After two minutes of the familiar holding pattern, Gracie tries to actually shoot a double, but Brock sees it coming a mile away and is already flurrying on Gracie before he makes contact. Brock lands the right hand multiple times on the weak takedown attempt and pushes Gracie off. Gracie now throws some low kicks of his own, but isn’t making much contact. With 15 seconds left, Gracie shoots another awful double and is rejected, so Brock shows him how it’s done and deposits him on the canvas with five seconds to go. 10-9 Brock and Sherdog scores the bout 30-28 for him overall.

Ivan Castillo vs. Guilherme Vasconcelos

Round 1

Castillo tries to preserve the distance with low kicks against the advancing Vasconcelos, who answers him in the kicking game while landing his right hand. Just before the two-minute mark, “Bomba” shoots in and puts Castillo on the mat briefly, but Castillo wall-walks up the cage and stands again, albeit while eating right hands. Castillo can’t free himself from Vasconcelos’ grip entirely as the Brazilian gets a waistlock on his foe and drags him back to the mat for a cleaner takedown. Now, Vasconcelos has proper top position with two minutes to go. Short punches for Vasconcelos land and he appears to be favoring an arm-triangle choke with heavy head position. Vasconcelos keeps punching and frees himself to quarter guard and Castillo doesn’t seem to notice the submission attempt at all. Castillo tries to buck and free himself, but he grabs ver Vasconcelos’ head, which is an awful idea. “Bomba” passes to the far side, locks the side choke on tight and this one is a wrap. Castillo tries to fight but he is on the outside of the cage and can’t use it for any sort of leverage, then taps.

Henry Corrales vs. Georgi Karakhanyan

Round 1

Corrales is the aggressor from the outset, marching down Karakhanyan and uncorking his right hand. He lands hard with a hook, precipitating a Karakhanyan double, but Corrales easily shuts it down. Each man is taking turns engaging with simple one-two combinations until Karakhanyan comes over the top with an overhand right, shoots a double and is rebuffed. The same engagement plays out again, but Corrales is starting to use his jab more effectively during the moments of inactivity from range. Hard engagement in the pocket and Corrales lands his left hook in the winging. Both featherweights circle out, but it’s the same pattern: Corrales walks in on Karakhanyan, who tries to maintain distance, then they both wing punches with Corrales landing the lead left. Karakhanyan throws his overhand right, shoots and is denied. When he tries to engage once more, he eats the lead left hook and is shaken off. 10-9 Corrales.

Round 2

Corrales walks his man down once more and finds his left hand, but Karakhanyan moves into the clinch. Karakhanyan wraps over Corrales head and jumps a guillotine that offers a moment of issue, but “OK” extricates himself, gets free and affirms top position, punching away from full guard. Corrales chips away, fighting wrist control from the “Insane” one while landing short shots. Eventually, the Millenia MMA product slides up the fence and with just less than 60 seconds to fight, fully frees himself to stand. Corrales immediately wants to engage, though neither man lands convincingly in immediate exchanges. Karakhanyan seems desperate for a late takedown, so he walks into a clinch, gets clocked with an uppercut and hook, then knocked on his back at the bell. 10-9 Corrales.

Round 3

Karakhanyan is the man pressing forward now, though he is walking into the more able boxing of his opponent. After eating a few jabs and hooks, Karakhanyan tries to shoot, but gets shucked and thrown, winding up on his back with Corrales on top, pounding away. “OK” pushes the issue for a moment, then stands up out of full guard, even fist bumping his opponent as he allows him to stand, which draws jeers from the crowd. The southpaw Karakhanyan continues to walk straight into jabs and lead left hooks from Corrales. Two minutes to go and Karakhanyan is flicking kicks with little sense of urgency. Finally, he shoots in on a single, but Corrales shuts it down with ease and is content to take his time in the clinch fending off his foe. Short knees to the lower body lands for Karakhanyan, but his takedown attempt is being easily fended off by Corrales. With 30 seconds to go, he gets “OK” to his knees then tries to turn the corner to take the back, but can’t advance beyond a single standing leg hook before the bell. 10-9 Corrales, who takes the bout 30-27 overall on the Sherdog scorecard.

Shane Kruchten vs. Aaron Pico

Round 1

Pico immediately presses the standup, walking down Kruchten down and putting his man’s back on the cage. After a few rote feints, Pico seduces Krutchten into throwing and lands a left to the body that puts his foe on the deck. Kruchten gets to his feet and tries to throw back: bad idea. As soon as Kruchten tries to land leg kick on his encroaching opponent, Pico opens up and digs to the body with a devastating left hook. The moment he lands, Kruchten crumples and Pico already knows it’s over, throwing his hand up in victory. Absolutely incredible one-shot body kill from the developing prospect in a mere matter of moments.

Michael Chandler vs. Goiti Yamauchi

Round 1

Chandler is the bull to Yamauchi’s matador early, stalking his man down and operating behind jabs, low kicks and right hands. When “Iron Mike” finally closes the distance successfully and unloads, Yamauchi doesn’t appear to suffer a knockdown, but rather willingly go to his back. More surprising, it works: Chandler follows the Brazilian down to the mat along the fence and sets up in full guard. Chandler chips away with the right hand, prompting Yamauchi to move his back to the fence with two minutes to go. Chandler continues to feed his opponent short right hands. Yamauchi is fighting to stand or sweep, but Chandler keeps moving his hips and is on top of the bottom man every step of the way until the bell sounds. 10-9 Chandler.

Round 2

As Round 2 begins, the southpaw Yamauchi is trying to catch Chandler’s lead hand and counter. The American doesn’t seem to take the exchange seriously until all of a sudden, Yamauchi unloads a Brazilian kick that clearly catches Chandler napping and rocks him. Chandler takes his paces back and recovers, while Yamauchi doesn’t seem dire to press the issue, despite knowing he’s got his man hurt. Yamauchi circles out and continues to pot shot, but it doesn’t help him, as Chandler catches his lead hand, then shoots a power double behind it, putting the Brazilian on the floor. The ground-and-pound is repetitive if effectual: Yamauchi looks for wrist control in full guard, but Chandler is simply too strong and smart, punching straight through it consistently. Before the bell, Yamauchi looks for an armbar, so Chandler stands up and rifles him with right hands. 10-9 Chandler once more.

Round 3

After a brief exchange, Chandler eats a low kick to the cup which prompts a brief pause in the action. After the resumption, the dynamic remains the same: it’s the orthodox Chandler walking down the southpaw Yamauchi, who seeks to kick from the outside. Unfortunately, kicking isn’t the best recipe to avoid a takedown, so the former Bellator champ catches on and tackles the Brazilian to the mat. Slow, incremental ground-and-pound from the former champ now, who stacks his foe into the fence and mauls away. Yamauchi looks for an armor and “Iron Mike” gets emboldened, pounding his man with punches and elbows, keeping up the pounding until the final bell. 30-27 Chandler on the Sherdog card.

Bellator MMA Welterweight Championship:
Douglas Lima vs. Rory MacDonald

Round 1

Both men look to preserve range with jabs and low kicks early on, but 90 seconds into the opening frame, MacDonald ducks under a Lima shot and runs him into the fence, angling for a takedown. With just under half of the round to go, he finally spins the champ down to the mat an affirms top position. Lima closes his guard, so the “Red King” simply digs to the ribcage, pounding away from full guard, occasionally bring his left hand over the top and landing. Referee Jason Herzog resets the welterweights on their feet with less than 20 seconds to go, but there’s not enough time for meaningful engagement. 10-9 MacDonald.

Round 2

More tentative leg kicking and jabbing as MacDonald assumes the role of aggressor, walking the champion back down to the fence. Clean right cross lands for MacDonald. Lima off his back foot is jabbing but can’t keep MacDonald from closing the distance. The Canadian remains in the familiar range, letting his right cross off whenever the champion throws. With less than 90 seconds to go, MacDonald lobs an inside low kick that hits the cup and prompts a halt from referee Jason Herzog. The impasse doesn’t last long and right off the restart, MacDonald shoots a single and runs the champ into the fence once more. The former UFC title challenger tries to drag Lima off the fence, then throw him an uchimata. but is blocked. MacDonald settles for landing knees to the body until the bell. 10-9 MacDonald once more.

Round 3

It’s the same arc: Lima is backing up throwing low cut kicks while MacDonald gets in his face and looks for takedowns. The champ lands a solid few to the calf of his challenge, but halfway through the round, MacDonald had feinted and politicked well enough to set up a double that puts Lima on the canvas. After a minute with little activity, Lima gets back to his feet and takes the center of the cage, intent to march down his challenger. Suddenly, with 45 seconds left in the round, Lima unfurls a right low kick that sends MacDonald skidding halfway across the cage and plants on his seat; the Brazilian quickly dives into top position. MacDonald seems to have no designs on standing back up on his own, wrapping the champ up and holding him from full guard until the bell. 10-9 Lima, if barely.

Round 4

The tables have changed: MacDonald tries to force the grappling game immediately, but winds up on his back with Lima in an advantageous half guard. Lima pounds away and smoothly moves into full mount for a moment. Lima doesn’t do much to advance, so at the halfway mark of the round, referee Jason Herzog is quick to stand them up. MacDonald moves right back into close range and scores a takedown, setting up on top on Lima, trying to pound away from full guard, but the champ meaningfully overhooks his arms and doesn’t allow any substantial ground-and-pound. 10-9 Lima.

Round 5

MacDonald, perhaps realizing that the last two rounds have been closer than he would want, presses instantly, moving into the body lock and putting the champ on the mat. Lima doesn’t have much to offer from his back, as his challenger repeatedly mashes with his right hand and forearm. There’s not much more to this round: the champion seems honestly run out of energy while the challenger continues to impose to strategy, if not thrilling. Lima looks to pendulum his leg, but it goes nowhere, as MacDonald pounds right through it. 10-9 MacDonald, giving the bout 48-47 to the challenger.

Bellator MMA Heavyweight Grand Prix Quarterfinal:
Quinton Jackson vs. Chael Sonnen

Round 1

Almost immediately, a grimacing Sonnen appears dead-set on a takedown. “Rampage” comes out with a high, boxing-style that seems to force his challenger. Sonnen secure a last then a left kick to the body. Sonnen is abandoning on a retreating Sonnen, but “Rampage” scores with a right. Sonnen keeps his volume high, but every punch Jackson throwing with much iller attention. Sonnen presses inside and gets a double-leg takedowns, Jackson turns to his knees and Sonnen us all over his back. He tries to lock in a choke, but Jackson spins to his back. This incites a scramble, and Sonnen tries for a guillotine. Not there. Round is over and Sherdog gives it to Sonnen, 10-9.

Round 2

Sonnen immediately operates behind the high guard while Jackson whiffs punches over the top and doesn't find his target. Finally, Sonnen dives into the clinch and seeks to press the action. Hard inside rights from Sonnen, who operates out of the clinch. The action in the clinch dies and Sonnen is content to stomp on the toes of Jackson, before finally separating briefly and exchanging. Sonnen quickly dives back into the clinch. Jackson begins elbowing the body of his adversary as time ticks down. 10-9 Jackson.

Round 3

Jackson circling smartly now, thwarting Sonnen the minute he tries to press for a double-leg takedown. The former UFC champ defends the takedown, then stands. Jackson comes out touching the body a bit, then finally breaks his opponent’s grip and lands his rigfht. It really goes nowhere, as Jackson lands to the body but doesn’t do much more and lets Sonnen get free. “Rampage” trying to land hard with an over-the-top right hand. Sonnen shoots inside, but Jackson defends smartly. Sonnen continues diving for a double-leg takedown, then lands a trip and begins working from guard on top. Open guard for Jackson, who is just overhooking his foe. Less than a minute to go in the bout. Jackson works from guard as Sonnen pounds away to the body, taking the fight and the contest 10-9 in this round. It's 29-28 Sonnen overall on this scorecard.
