Jake Norsworthy vs. Manny Lozoya

Round 1

Lozoya tries to back his opponent up against the cage, but Norsworthy angles out to the center and flicks out a few kicks to keep him at range. Tight, high stance from Lozoya as he presses forward, swinging big overhand rights and looking for early the homerun shot. A couple of the punches clip Norsworthy and get him to back up a few steps, but no major damage seems to be done. Lozoya changes levels and easily drives Norsworthy to the ground, landing in his open guard. Norsworthy gets to a knee and Lozoya stands to catch his transitioning opponent in a quick guillotine choke.

Norsworthy resists for a moment, but the choke is locked on and he’s forced to tap before he passes out.

Clovis Hancock vs. Ruben Esparza

Round 1

Esparza charges forward and bombs on Hancock with punches, but he quickly changes tactics and opts for a takedown as the middleweights run up against the cage. Hancock is put on his back, where he instantly hunts for a kimura submission on Esparza’s left arm. Esparza looks to be in trouble momentarily but soon frees the arm and begins connecting with some heavy ground-and-pound. Hancock slows the assault by swinging his legs around, threatening with an armbar, so Esparza stands to escape danger. Hancock follows suit, runs straight at Esparza and gets grounded again. This time, the 185ers get back to their feet in a few seconds. Hancock is breathing very heavily now, his face turning bright red just two minutes into the opening stanza. He tries to clinch but Esparza just tosses him back to the canvas. Hancock throws up a triangle-armbar but Esparza stands and steps over his opponent’s head to loosen the triangle. Hancock switches to a leglock attempt, but there’s nothing there either. Another triangle from Hancock sees Esparza try to slam his way free, but Hancock gets a hand on the mat to lessen the impact. Yet another triangle from Hancock fails to produce a tap, and Esparza finishes the round on top.

Round 2

Esparza opens the action in round two with a few good right hands, then turns a rear waistlock into yet another takedown. Hancock looks tired, unable to escape from underneath as Esparza lands short, grinding ground-and-pound. Hancock gets cut open above his right eye, and soon the mat beneath the men is coated with red blood. The action slows toward the middle of the round, prompting a late standup from referee Don Turnage. The middleweights are back on their feet for only a few seconds before Esparza brings the fight back to the floor. Hancock throws up his legs, looking for another triangle setup, but he’s much more tired now and there’s no submission to be found. Hancock nearly manages to turn a kimura into a sweep in the final 20 seconds but once again he finishes the round on his back.

Round 3

Esparza scores another quick takedown to begin the final frame, but this time, Hancock is able to come out on top in the scramble. He catches Esparza kneeling and traps one arm behind Esparza’s back to land about a dozen unfettered right hands to the face. Hancock stops punching and jumps on Esparza’s back instead, then secures his hooks and applies a rear-naked choke. Esparza tries to bury his chin but it’s too late, and Hancock uses the RNC to force a tap and complete a wild comeback win.

Joe Angel Zamora vs. Mike Trinh

Round 1

Zamora switches between orthodox and southpaw stances as he hops awkwardly around the cage, but before he can throw much of anything, he pokes Trinh in the eye with his outstretched left hand. Trinh recovers quickly and puts Zamora on the ground in a hurry, then steps over to full mount. Trinh peels off to try an armbar but can’t get the tap, and now it’s Zamora grabbing for a heel hook.

The 130-pounders are tangled up in a leglock battle now 90 seconds into the round. Neither man appears close to finishing a hold but neither will release. Two minutes in, Trinh lets go of the leg and scrambles to keep top position. Zamora wraps him up tight in half guard, so Trinh leans across his opponent’s body and drives elbows into his ribs. Zamora tries to bump and sweep, winds up on his knees driving forward on a single-leg attempt. Trinh sprawls and then steps over the kneeling Zamora’s body to go belly-down on an armbar. This time, Zamora taps out.

Justin Wren vs. Juan Torres

Round 1

After a tense 45 seconds of circling and pawing with jabs, the southpaw Torres presses forward and looks to clinch. Wren reverses straight away and puts Torres’ back against the fence, pinning him there with an underhook. As he leans his weight against Torres, “The Big Pygmy” uses his free left hand and elbow to send a couple shots upstairs. Wren grabs for a bodylock but can’t get his arms around Torres, and now referee John McCarthy splits up the inactive big men midway through the round. They’re back in the clinch 20 seconds later, Wren on the outside again. Torres scores with a few body blows as he’s pressed against the cage, but Wren slows that down with a nice uppercut inside. There’s more slow going between the heavyweights even after they separate, as they continue to circle and jab in the middle. Wren grabs a Thai clinch and sends a pair of knees up the center. Torres waves him on and is rewarded with an errant kick to the groin; he recovers from the foul and the final 10 seconds run off without incident.

Round 2

Torres tries to get a little more busy with his hands as the second round opens but he’s quickly shut down by another clinch from Wren. The heavyweights hang out on the fence for a few seconds, separate and then return to the clinch, still with Wren on the outside. Wren doesn’t appear to be having much trouble holding this position, but he’s also not doing much with it. A couple knees come up the center and connect to the body of Torres, but that’s about it through the midway point of the round and the fight. With 1:45 on the clock, Wren willingly backs up to the center of the cage and leaves Torres with his back on the fence. Torres steps cautiously out to the center, where the tired heavyweights lean in front of one another for 30 seconds before Wren clinches up again.

Round 3

There’s more clinching at the start of the final round, followed by more of the fighters standing a few feet apart in the middle of the cage and staring at one another.

Wren digs an underhook and shoves Torres against the cage, slams his body with a couple right hands and then backs away. The sequence repeats a few times, and each time Wren lets go, Torres just stays put on the cage, draws a deep breath with his hands on his waist and waits for Wren to come back. With 85 seconds on the clock, they move back to the middle, Torres raising his arms and smirking at Wren for reasons which are entirely unclear. Wren just hugs him against the cage some more as the final minute ticks down. Far too late, the heavyweights begin to throw hands just as the fight comes to an end.

Anthony Ivy vs. Jason Langellier

Round 1

Ivy ducks under an early high kick and tries to run his opponent to the ground, but it’s Langellier who comes out on top in the ensuing scramble. “The Slim Reaper” shoves Ivy up against the base of the cage and steps over into full guard less than 90 seconds into the bout. Langellier lands a few short, hard right hands before Ivy is able to get a knee inside and reclaim half guard. Ivy rolls to his knees, but Langellier sees the move coming and is waiting to snatch up Ivy’s neck.

Langellier wraps up the D’arce choke and drops to his back, where he squeezes on the neck until Ivy submits.

Ryan Hollis vs. Adrian Yanez

Round 1

Hollis catches the first leg kick from Yanez and runs him to the ground in the center of the cage. Yanez shifts underneath, threatening to kick up his legs for an armbar or triangle as Hollis scoots him backward toward the fence. As they near the wall, Hollis raises up to land a few strikes, but the space gives Yanez room to escape and scramble to his feet. Yanez turns the tables with a takedown of his own but has trouble navigating past Hollis’ long limbs and eventually has to stand. Hollis is back on his feet with 80 seconds remaining in the opening round. Yanez wants to clinch again, gets tossed to the ground but winds up on top in the scramble. He allows Hollis to stand again which proves to be a mistake, as Hollis hits another takedown and finishes the round on top.

Round 2

Hollis touches the side of Yanez’s face with a few pawing right hooks, but it’s Yanez scoring the harder strikes as he swings and connects with two or three good left hooks. This sends “Riptide” shooting for another takedown, which he completes but can’t capitalize on, as Yanez scrambles right back up. The bantamweights clinch on the fence, Hollis’ back to the fence until he opts to drop to guard to try a choke. Yanez quickly escapes the sub attempt and passes to full mount, but he’s forced out of that just as fast when Hollis threatens with a leglock. Yanez escapes from this, too, and now stands over Hollis, stacking up his legs and dropping punches. Yanez is patient as he looks for an opening to land more strikes or come back to the ground in an advantageous position. Finally, with 30 seconds on the clock, Yanez lands in cross side control on Hollis’ right side. Hollis rolls to escape the position just before time expires.

Round 3

Yanez gets Hollis in a bodylock on the fence and trips him to the canvas about one minute into the final frame. Hollis throws up his legs from the bottom, hunting for a submission, but he only gets three good left hands on the chin for his trouble. Hollis continues to angle for subs as the 135ers fight on the floor, while Yanez keeps landing short right hands when he can find the openings.

At the two-minute warning, Yanez stands up over Hollis, shucks his legs and tries to come down in side control. Hollis shifts his hips to avoid the bad position and tries to take off Yanez’s head with an upkick. Yanez dodges the strike and kneels down in side control on Hollis’ left side, but the lanky Hollis gets a knee in between them to create space. Yanez is having trouble finding the space to strike here in the late going but he refuses to let Hollis stand up. Hollis appears to land an illegal upkick in the final 20 seconds but Yanez offers no complaint and seems happy to finish the fight on top.

Jeremy Mahon vs. Davis Sylvester

Round 1

There’s plenty of leg-kicking and circling in the first two minutes of the bout, but there doesn’t seem to be much damage inflicted by either man. Sylvester makes a move by shooting for a takedown, and he succeeds in planting Mahon on the canvas near the middle of the cage. Mahon keeps an open guard, looking to escape or throw up a submission, while Sylvester peppers him with short ground-and-pound. With 90 seconds left, Mahon bursts back to his feet and runs Sylvester against the fence with over-unders. Mahon drops levels to hit a double-leg takedown but has to slow down after hitting the mat, as Sylvester threatens with a loose guillotine choke from half guard for the final 20 seconds of the round.

Round 2

Mahon gets another takedown, earlier in the round this time, but he’s quickly swept underneath by Sylvester.

The tables turn again 20 seconds later when Mahon sweeps back to top position and begins elbowing Sylvester’s face from half guard. Mahon doesn’t seem to be doing much damage with the strikes but he’s making things uncomfortable by intermittently placing a forearm across Sylvester’s throat. Inside the final minute, referee John McCarthy calls for action from the fighters. Mahon responds by unloading with a few dozen right hands to Sylvester’s body. It’s not a sequence which would stop a lot of fights, but with Sylvester offering virtually nothing in return, referee McCarthy opts to halt the bout.

Richard Knepp vs. Isaac Villanueva

Round 1

The middleweights fight toward the fence, where they briefly engage and then separate with a Villanueva uppercut. As soon as he gets close enough to his opponent again, Villanueva grabs the Thai clinch and shoots a knee up the center. This gets Knepp off balance, stumbling around the edge of the cage, where Villanueva finds him with a left hook and another uppercut. Knepp drops to his knees and Villanueva pounds away with follow-up punches until referee Kerry Hatley intervenes.

Daniel Pineda vs. Emmanuel Sanchez

Round 1

Pineda connects with his first right hand down the center and then keeps Sanchez off balance with a chopping leg kick. A short left hook lands for Pineda as he presses forward on Sanchez, shooting once they near the fence and completing a strong takedown. Sanchez tries to roll through and escape but leaves his back exposed, and Pineda nearly secures back-mount. Instead, Sanchez rolls again and puts Pineda back in guard. Pineda slams him with a couple good left hands before Sanchez is able to scramble back to his feet. Back to the center go the 150-pounders, now two minutes into a busy first round. Pineda closes the gap again but it’s Sanchez grabbing the Thai plum and driving a knee up the center. Pineda keeps hold and wraps up Sanchez’s legs to force another takedown, this time right in the center of the cage. Sanchez bumps and sweeps but Pineda gets fancy and tries to catch a triangle in the transition. Sanchez slips out, leaving Pineda on his back to attack the legs of “El Matador.” The submission threat forces Sanchez to come back to the mat, where Pineda comes out on top. Pineda spends the final 40 seconds of the round in Sanchez’s half guard, grinding with short strikes.

Round 2

Pineda puts a hard spinning kick in Sanchez’s breadbasket, but seconds later it’s Sanchez knocking the off-balance Pineda to the floor with a punch to the chest. Sanchez follows his opponent to the ground and gets tangled up in Pineda’s half guard. Sanchez lands a few short shots on the mat before Pineda jumps up. However, once he’s on his feet, Pineda is greeted with a pair of clinch knees. They fight toward the fence, where Pineda wraps up Sanchez and trips him to the ground. Sanchez tries to make things uncomfortable for Pineda with a body triangle from the bottom, though it doesn’t seem to faze Pineda, who continues to shove Sanchez around the perimeter of the cage. Referee Jacob Motalvo brings the fighters to their feet with 90 seconds on the clock, but they’re back down within seconds after an ill-conceived high kick from Pineda allows Sanchez to take top position. From the bottom, Pineda attacks the legs of Sanchez until he’s able to regain his footing. Back up with 40 seconds left, Pineda shoots under a punch from Sanchez and closes out the round with one more takedown to half guard.

Round 3

Pineda puts a front kick in the gut of Sanchez before changing levels and hitting a takedown in the center of the cage. Sanchez sweeps almost immediately and passes to side control on Pineda’s right. Pineda reclaims guard, so Sanchez postures up and drops three hard hammerfists on his face. Back down comes Sanchez, now to land punches while wrapped up in Pineda’s closed guard. Sanchez stands, shucks the legs and dives back to the mat with a hard right hand that connects square on Pineda’s face. Sanchez is beginning to overwhelm Pineda with volume, even as Pineda rolls to his left and escapes to his feet. Sanchez traps him against the fence and attacks Pineda’s legs with knee strikes in the clinch. Pineda catches Sanchez throwing a spinning elbow and takes his back, so “El Matador” rolls to the ground and comes out on top in the scramble.

Pineda goes for Sanchez’s legs once again; this time, Sanchez seems less concerned and uses the attempt to spin around and take Pineda’s back with just over one minute remaining. Pineda rolls to his back, surrendering mount, but he muslces his way out by pushing Sanchez off and jumps back up. Toe to toe in the middle of the cage with 40 seconds left, Sanchez decks the bloody and swollen Pineda with a hard right cross. Pineda tries a spinning kick and gets taken down again, and that may be all she wrote. Sanchez holds down Pineda for the last half minute, sending this one to the judges for a decision.

Round 1

Vassell lands a nice leg kick early which is answered by an inside thigh kick from Newton, but the latter strays wide and clips Vassell on the cup. The Englishman recovers after a few seconds and comes back to land a trip takedown near the fence, then another after Newton gets back to his feet. Vassell sets up in side control on Newton’s left, then steps over to full mount and looks to frame up an arm-triangle choke. Newton gets his head and arm free but can’t buck Vassell off of him. The former Bellator champ rolls to his stomach, surrendering his back to Vassell, who quickly establishes his hooks. Vassell lands half a dozen short right hands to the side of Newton’s head, trying to soften him up for a submission. Newton gets to his knees and Vassell locks up a body triangle to keep his position, then pulls Newton backward toward the mat. With one minute on the clock, Newton is on his side, leaning to his left with Vassell locked onto his back. Newton rolls to his back, giving up full mount; this time he’s able to roll Vassell out of positon and scramble out of the precarious position. Vassell stays glued to his opponent, nearly keeping him on the ground but ultimately releasing him from the clinch on the fence. Suddenly, Newton gets a bodylock on Vassell in the middle of the cage and slams him to the ground just before the bell.

Round 2

Newton catches a kick from Vassell and tries to run him to the ground, but the rangy Brit sprawls out of the early takedown attempt. A short right hand connects for Vassell, answered by a harder right over the top from Newton. Same as in the opening round, Newton throws an inside thigh kick and it winds up on Vassell’s cup. Referee Kerry Hatley pauses the action to allow Vassell to recover but does not take a point away from Newton for the second infraction. When the fight resumes, Vassell slugs down the center with a straight left hand, then catches Newton coming forward and clips him with a right hook behind a jab. Newton gets a trip takedown in the middle of the cage and thwarts Vassell’s attempt to hit the switch. Newton lands in position for an arm-triangle but Vassell defends and rolls to his knees. Newton follows and holds Vassell with a rear waistlock, slamming him violently back to the canvas. Vassell stands again but can’t shake Newton, who’s glued to “The Swarm” as they fight over to the fence. Newton throws a knee in the clinch and once again hits Vassell with a low blow. Vassell grimaces and then drops to his knees in pain after referee Hatley separates the 205ers. It looks bad for a minute with Vassell immobile on the ground, but eventually he composes himself and gets back to his feet. The referee takes one point from Newton for the third foul, and the fight is back on with just about 60 seconds on the clock. Newton grabs a kick from Vassell and tries for a takedown, but he’s fended off.

Round 3

Newton presses forward at the start of the final frame, perhaps aware that a finish may be his only route to victory after the second-round point deduction. He clips Vassell with one of his trademark spinning backfists, then closes the distance and clinches near the fence. Newton hits a takedown and sets up in Vassell’s open guard, trying to mount offense but being stymied by his lengthy opponent. Vassell is back on his feet with 3:00 on the clock, still held against the fence by the underhook of Newton.

The Englishman pulls down Newton’s head in the Thai clinch and delivers a pair of knees as he reverses to the outside position. Two minutes left and now it’s Vassell dropping levels to hit a takedown, planting Newton awkwardly on his seat at the base of the fence with his right leg bent underneath. Vassell flattens out his man, steps over to full mount and drops cautious left hands as he keeps heavy chest-to-chest pressure. Vassell doesn’t want Newton to escape here in the final minute, and he gets his way, finishing the round and the fight in full mount, dropping punches on Newton to the final bell.

Melvin Guillard vs. Derek Campos

Round 1

The lightweights touch gloves and then commence the swinging, with Guillard connecting first and sending Campos backward a few steps with a hard right hook. Guillard gives chase, grabs the collar tie and hits Campos with a level elbow in the clinch. Campos stumbles back some more but Guillard chases after him and runs straight into an accidental headbutt. Now it’s Guillard on wobbly legs, fighting to fend off a takedown attempt, but Campos ultimately wrestles him to the ground near the fence inside the opening minute. Campos works from half guard on Guillard’s right side and leans across to the left, perhaps looking for an arm-triangle choke as he keeps his left arm looped behind Guillard’s neck. With two minutes on the clock, Campos postures up and throws a few hard punches but Guillard is able to dodge them and scramble back to his feet. The fighters are toe-to-toe in the middle of the cage again, 90 seconds left in the round. Guillard drives home a few straight right hands, each time sliding out of the pocket before Campos can land a counter. Now it’s the jab of Guillard flashing in Campos’ face; now, a leg kick. It’s not a busy last minute but what action there is goes in Guillard’s favor.

Round 2

Campos walks Guillard toward the fence and clips him with an awkward left hand on the chin. Guillard slumps down a little and then goes truly wobbly when Campos comes across the middle with a right. Guillard is out on his feet, trying to swing back, trying to bob and weave, but Campos smells blood and he’s out to finish. Campos cracks Guillard with several clean punches, but Guillard manages to stay on his feet, despite big damage. Finally, a speedy two-piece finds Guillard’s face and finally knocks him unconscious, sending “The Young Assassin” slumping to the ground and forcing referee Don Turnage to halt the contest.

Kimbo Slice vs. Dhafir “Dada 5000” Harris

Round 1

Veteran referee “Big” John McCarthy is the third man in the cage for the heavyweight co-main event. Harris gets clipped with Kimbo’s first left hand, grabs for Slice’s legs but comes up with nothing. Harris walks forward and gets wrapped up, then slammed to the ground. Kimbo passes straight to full mount and puts his weight on Harris, who clasps his hands around Slice to wrap up tight from underneath. Kimbo tries to pry himself loose but “Dada 5000” is giving him no space. After a minute of this, referee McCarthy calls for action. Harris releases his hold, waits for Kimbo to posture up and then tangles his legs to trip Slice to the ground. The heavyweights climb back to their feet, where Harris pushes Kimbo against the cage and throws a few foot stomps before being separated by the ref. “Dada” is on the charge, swinging his way into range and then pressing Kimbo’s back to the fence again. Kimbo escapes as they hit the 60-second mark and turns the tables by holding Harris on the cage, though little happens in the clinch before McCarthy breaks them up again. Kimbo swings a tired right hand over the top, turning Harris’ head just before the bell.

Round 2

The big men come out swinging at the start of the second, but there looks to be significantly less power in both men’s punches after a grinding, hard-fought first frame. Kimbo winds up changing levels and floors Harris with another takedown inside the opening minute. This time, Slice backs off after a few seconds and tells the ref to bring Harris back to his feet. A few seconds later, Kimbo comes back to complete another takedown at the fence. Referee McCarthy warns Harris for grabbing Kimbo’s shorts as they grapple near the wall. They don’t stay on the ground long, as the increasingly impatient McCarthy stands the heavyweights up again. “Dada” stays on his knees a few seconds too long and gets another warning. Once he’s back up, Kimbo blitzes his tired opponent; a few punches seems to graze but Slice is exhausted, too. Harris looks for a front headlock on the fence and Kimbo goes willingly to his knees, where he takes a short breather before driving forward for a slow-motion takedown. Harris offers zero resistance as Slice passes to mount. Shockingly, yet understandably, referee McCarthy stands up the fighters with Slice in full mount. In the closing seconds of the round, the fighters wobble around the edge of the fence, Harris catching the side of Slice’s head with a couple thumping left hands.

Round 3

Harris picks up where he left off in round two, backing up Kimbo with wide left hands until they hit the fence. Slice catches him coming in and counters with an uppercut before the exhausted heavyweights rest on the fence for a moment.

Referee McCarthy breaks them up 45 seconds into the round. Suddenly, Kimbo pounces and attacks “Dada,” who is standing with his hands down and his back against the cage. Slice unloads his gas tank with left hooks, right hands and an uppercut that leaves Harris stumbling all the way across the cage. “Dada” is out on his feet, leaning against the backpedaling Kimbo. As soon as Slice separates himself and removes the support, Harris does a cartoonish half-circle jog around the cage and flops to the ground, face first. The crowd explodes as Kimbo Slice picks up a third-round knockout victory.

Ken Shamrock vs. Royce Gracie

Round 1

Texas referee Jacob Montalvo will officiate tonight’s light heavyweight headliner.

The two MMA pioneers do not touch gloves as the fight gets underway, and Gracie lands the first strike with an outside leg kick. Gracie flicks out a few more kicks to the legs and body while Shamrock inches forward, not letting anything go in the opening two minutes. Shamrock finally winds up for a punch and steps inside but he’s sucked into the clinch by Gracie, who throws a few knees up the middle. One of the knees appears to catch Shamrock on the cup; he grimaces and lets out a pained noise as Gracie lands another knee and whips him to the ground.

Gracie straddles Shamrock and drops three or four hammerfists before referee Montalvo, who did not acknowledge the low blow, steps in and waves off the contest.
