Andrey Koreshkov Crowned Welterweight Champion in Bellator 140 Headliner

Andrey Koreshkov showed Douglas Lima the door.

Buoyed by strategic takedowns, frustrating clinches and sporadic aggression on the feet, Koreshkov captured the Bellator MMA welterweight championship with a unanimous decision over Lima in the Bellator 140 headliner on Friday at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn. All three cageside judges scored it for Koreshkov (18-1, 9-1 Bellator): 48-47, 50-45 and 50-45.

Lima (26-6, 8-2), who had not fought in 15 months because of multiple knee surgeries, seemed baffled by the Russian’s approach and looked increasingly sluggish the further the match went. Koreshkov struck for takedowns in every round but the fifth, successfully navigated the Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt’s guard, mixed in some ground-and-pound and answered sweeps by returning to his feet and picking up where he left off.

Positive moments were few and far between for Lima, who never got in rhythm. The setback snaps a five-fight winning streak for the 27-year-old Brazilian.

Daley Wins Fourth Straight

Former Cage Rage champion Paul Daley disposed of Dennis Olson with second-round punches in the welterweight co-main event. Daley (37-13-2, 3-0 Bellator) brought it to a close 72 seconds into round two, as he recorded his fourth consecutive victory.

Olson (14-9, 0-3 Bellator) was competitive for much of the first five minutes -- he executed a takedown and attempted a handful of submissions -- but could not withstand the firepower of the experienced Englishman. Early in the second round, Daley tripped the CES MMA veteran to the mat and swarmed with punches and hammerfists. After taking a brief respite to gather himself, “Semtex” stood over his squatting counterpart and unloaded again, forcing referee Dan Miragliotta to act with Olson ducking for cover.

Daley, 32, has now delivered 27 of his 37 career wins by knockout or technical knockout.

Ward Flattens Overmatched Carroll

Bellator Season 9 tournament winner Brennan Ward knocked out Roger Carroll with a clean straight right hand in the first round of their welterweight showcase. Ward (11-3, 7-3 Bellator) sealed it 2:06 into round one.

Carroll (16-12, 0-1 Bellator) was easy pickings on the feet. Ward tagged him with power punches throughout, put the North Carolinian on the seat of his pants with a front kick to the body and dumped him to the canvas with ease. A little less than midway through the first round, he countered an ill-advised low kick and planted his fist on Carroll’s jaw, sending him to the mat stiff and unconscious.

The defeat halted a three-fight winning streak for Carroll.

Honeycutt-Bradley Ends in No-Contest

An inadvertent clash of heads resulted in a no-contest between Chris Honeycutt and Paul Bradley in the second round of their featured tilt at 170 pounds. The impact opened a lightning-bolt gash near Bradley’s hairline, leading the cageside physician to call for the stoppage 2:47 into round two.

Honeycutt (6-0, 2-0 Bellator) took charge with a probing jab, kicks to the legs and body, knees to the thigh from the clinch and aggressive punching combinations. Though Bradley (22-6, 2-1 Bellator) struggled to get his offense in gear, he drew a smile from the Dethrone Base Camp prospect with a short right hook in the second round, not long before skull-to-skull contact drew blood and resulted in an anticlimactic finish.

Page KOs Journeyman Bears

Undefeated London Shootfighters export Michael Page knocked out Rudy Bears with a lunging right hand to the face in the first round of their welterweight showcase. Page (8-0, 4-0 Bellator) delivered the walk-off shot 65 seconds into round one.

Bears (16-14, 2-6 Bellator) was on borrowed time before he ever set foot in the cage. Page toyed with the journeyman, sat him down with a two-punch combination inside the first 30 seconds and reversed a takedown before abandoning top position for the safety of the standup. Once upright, the charismatic Englishman parted Bears’ defenses with a crushing straight right that brought the bout to an immediate close. He left the scene with his arms stretched skyward.

Page, 28, has finished seven of his first eight foes in the first round.

Prelims: Quinn Guillotine Submits Lowe

In preliminary action, Ryan Quinn (11-5-1, 7-0 Bellator) submitted Waylon Lowe (15-7, 1-1 Bellator) with a guillotine choke 2:47 into the second round of their 160-pound catchweight pairing; Kaline Medeiros (5-4, 1-0 Bellator) tapped Sarah Payant (1-1, 0-1 Bellator) with a kimura 3:24 into round one of their women’s flyweight affair; Dean Hancock (2-0, 2-0 Bellator) dispatched Alex Dunworth (2-2, 0-1 Bellator) on a corner stoppage 2:14 into the second round of their duel at 155 pounds; Remo Cardarelli (5-2, 1-0 Bellator) took a unanimous decision from Billy Giovanella (8-4, 0-1 Bellator) in a three-round flyweight tilt, earning 30-27, 29-28 and 29-28 marks from the judges; Kin Moy (7-2, 1-1 Bellator) submitted Blair Tugman (7-6, 2-2 Bellator) with a triangle choke 3:01 into the third round of their battle at 135 pounds; Parker Porter (6-4, 1-1 Bellator) tapped Eric Bedard (6-6, 0-1 Bellator) with a keylock 2:51 into round two of their heavyweight clash; and Ilya Kotau (1-0, 1-0 Bellator) submitted Nicholas Sergiacom (1-1, 0-1 Bellator) with a rear-naked choke 2:17 into the first round of their encounter at 170 pounds.
