By the Numbers: Brandon Vera vs. Arjan Singh Bhullar

Brandon Vera has extended his heavyweight reign at One Championship into his 40s, but perhaps his most difficult test to date lies directly ahead.

“The Truth” will lock horns with fellow Ultimate Fighting Championship veteran Arjan Singh Bhullar at One Championship “Dangal” at Singapore Indoor Stadium on Saturday (Note: The event was already recorded and will air via tape delay). Heavyweight gold will be on the line as Vera attempts to rebound from a loss to Aung La N Sang in a light heavyweight title bout in his last outing at One Championship “Century” Part 2 in October 2019. Bhullar, meanwhile, is coming off a three-round verdict over Mauro Cerilli on the same card.

Here is a by-the-numbers look at the Vera vs. Bhullar showdown:

43: Age of Vera, who was born on Oct. 10, 1977 in Norfolk, Virginia. “You Light Up My Life” by Debby Boone was the top single in the United States at that time, while “Star Wars” concluded a 13-week run as the No. 1 film at the domestic box office.

1,982: Days between when Vera initially claimed the One Championship heavyweight title and when his defense against Bhullar will officially air. “The Truth” defeated Paul Cheng via first-round knockout to claim the vacant strap at One Championship 36 “Spirit of Champions” on Dec. 11, 2015.

26: Number of seconds needed by Vera to dispatch Cheng in that aforementioned title bout. That ranks as the quickest stoppage of Vera’s 25-fight professional career.

4: First-round finishes under the One banner for Vera, who has stopped Igor Subora, Cheng, Hideki Sekine and Cerilli in less than five minutes apiece while competing for the Singapore-based promotion. Vera has nine first-round finishes over the course of his pro career overall.

8-7: Vera’s record with the Ultimate Fighting Championship. Over the course of a promotional tenure that began in October 2005 and ended in August 2013, the Alliance MMA product earned wins over the likes of Frank Mir, Krzysztof Soszynski, Eliot Marshall, Justin Eilers and Assuerio Silva, to name a few.

5: Losses to men who have held UFC titles on Vera’s record. “The Truth” has fallen victim to Mauricio Rua, Jon Jones, Randy Couture, Fabricio Werdum and Tim Sylvia — all within the confines of the Octagon.

35: Age for Bhullar following his birthday this Thursday. He was born in Richmond, British Columbia, Canada, and represents Ryan’s MMA-Checkmat Vancouver, but has also spent time at American Kickboxing Academy in San Jose, California.

285: Weight, in pounds, at which Bhullar competed in wrestling for Simon Fraser University. Bhullar was an NAIA national champion for the school in 2008 and 2009 after logging a third-place finish in 2007.

7: Occasions in which Bhullar has represented Canada internationally in freestyle wrestling. Bhullar competed at the World Championships in 2007, 2009, 2010 and 2011; at the Summer Olympics in 2012; at the Commonwealth Games in 2010 and at the Pan American Games in 2007.

7-0: Record in fights that go the distance for Bhullar, who outpointed Cerilli in his One Championship debut in October 2019.
