Sherdog’s Official Mixed Martial Arts Rankings

‘Scarface’ Reloaded

There is no change atop the featherweight rankings. Jose Aldo made sure of that.

The longtime 145-pound kingpin weathered blistering punches and a furious pace from Chad Mendes in their rematch at UFC 179, fighting tooth-and-nail with the Team Alpha Male stud for 25 minutes. Aldo’s chin held up under all Mendes had to offer, and in the end, the precise, powerful striking which has marked the Brazilian’s reign carried him to victory once more. With the unanimous decision win, Aldo maintains his grip on the featherweight division’s No. 1 spot, while Mendes holds strong at No. 2, having upped his stock even in defeat.

Light heavyweight Phil Davis was able to grind out a three-round unanimous nod against heavy-handed Glover Texeira in the UFC 179 co-main event, propelling “Mr. Wonderful” up the ranks to No. 6. Meanwhile, Bellator MMA champion Emanuel Newton slides up one spot to No. 9 after a gutsy, come-from-behind submission of Linton Vassell at Bellator 130. Former Strikeforce titleholder Dan Henderson drops three spots to No. 10, having won only once in his last five outings.

Meanwhile, Joe Warren enters the bantamweight ranks at No. 10 due to his Bellator title-unifying win against Eduardo Dantas, who falls to the ranks of the contenders. Wilson Reis joins the list of flyweight contenders after his impressive first-round submission of Scott Jorgensen on the UFC 179 undercard.
