UVC 23 results: Zachrich wins another, Spohn gets submission

(PRESS RELEASE) -- COLUMBUS, Oh. – Ultimate Victory Challenge returned with yet another bang on Friday night, as UVC 23: Invasion went down at the Aladdin Shrine Center in Columbus, Ohio.

In the main event, UVC middleweight champion Luke Zachrich (12-2) moved his UVC record to 2-0 in a non-title bout against Marcus Finch (7-7) with a unanimous decision. Zachrich controlled the bout in all aspects, and it seemed at times like there were two completely different fights going on in one. The first round mostly featured Zachrich showcasing his ground game, as he transitioned on the ground and spent most of the first frame trying to submit Finch. Then, the fight completely changed in the second round, as Zachrich showcased his boxing skills as the two fighters stood toe to toe. Then, the third round featured a little bit of both, as Zachrich boxed first then landed a power double to close out the clear-cut decision win. After the bout, an emotional Zachrich brought his wife and new baby in to the cage and mentioned that this could be his last appearance inside the cage.

In the co-main event, Dan Spohn (8-3) continued his foray into the submission arsenal, as “Dragon” submitted Aaron Mays (3-3) with a lighting quick belly-down armbar. Spohn ended up on his back after an early takedown from Mays, but the Columbus product continued to fight from the bottom, eventually locking in an armbar out of nowhere to earn his second consecutive submission win in UVC action.

In a fight of the night candidate, lightweight Joe Heiland (9-2-1) pulled out a squeaker in a split decision over Augusta Tindall (3-3). Neither fighter gave an inch as they battled back and forth in a grinding fight, but the tide appeared to turn when Tindall landed some big shots near the end of the second round. Heiland was able to recover, although he suffered a massive cut and dislocated jaw from Tindall’s combination.

Strikeforce veteran Marc Cofer (9-7) picked up his first UVC win in four tries, as the 41-year-old mentioned it was on his bucket list of things to do before hanging up his gloves. Cofer controlled Tyson Triplett (6-9) with his wrestling through three rounds in the fight.

Cornelius Godfrey (8-1) picked up his second consecutive win and first as a member of Ronin Training Center, as “The Executioner” earned a workmanlike unanimous decision over the ultra tough Corey Simmons (4-4) in a bantamweight clash. And Matt Anderson (1-1) opened up the night’s pro action with a slick armbar submission over Jeramy Karshner (0-1) in his UVC debut.

In amateur action, Donny Korbel (7-5) earned a razor thin split decision over UVC bantamweight champion Aaron Hughes (8-5) in a bout that was hotly contested and could have gone either way.

DiSabato MMA fighters remained unbeaten in UVC action, as lightweight Corey Dulaney (5-0) and bantamweight Jordan Schembri (3-0) both earned title fights with UFC Hall of Famer Mark Coleman in their corner. Dulaney put on one of the best fights of the night in his matchup of unbeaten fighters against Robert McPherson (5-1), while the 18-year-old Schembri showed massive growth in his second consecutive UVC victory in the night’s opening bout where he submitted Austin Durbin (3-2) with a north-south choke. Veteran featherweight Ronnie Shoemaker (8-3) got back on the winning track by picking up his first UVC win with a rear naked choke over UVC original Jeff Dotson (4-4).

UVC returns to Columbus at the Aladdin Shrine Center on July 13 for our five-year anniversary show.
