Rivera submits Gordon to capture the CFFC Welterweight Title

(PRESS RELEASE) -- It was a triumphant return to New Jersey for
Joey Rivera as he captured the Cage Fury Fighting Championships’
welterweight title with a triangle choke submission victory over
MMA veteran, Doug Gordon, in the second round of CFFC 8: Seek and
Destroy’s main event on Friday night at the Resorts Superstar
Theatre. Rivera, who was born and raised in Vineland, New Jersey,
now lives and trains in Arizona, survived a tough first round after
feeling the power of Gordon’s right hand. Early in the second,
Rivera was dropped but was able to maintain his composure and tie
up Gordon on the ground. Rivera took full advantage of the ground
game and slapped on a triangle. Gordon fought valiantly to escape
but Rivera trapped the leg bringing Gordon to the mat, forcing the
tap out at 1:07 of round two. Rivera improves his record to an
unblemished 6-0 with six stoppages.
Putting his personal issues beside him and a week of multiple opponent changes, Jay Coleman stepped into the cage for the first time in four years to face journey man, Sam Jackson. A veteran of over 30 fights, Jackson took the fight on just three days’ notice. Ring rust appeared to be a factor in the first after Coleman appeared to be a step behind Jackson. Every time Coleman attacked, he was met with a counter strike. After getting instructions from UFC lightweight champion, Frankie Edgar, after the first round, Coleman regained his confidence and staggered Jackson during an exchange. Coleman backed Jackson against the fence, picked him up and slammed him to the canvas. Coleman then unleashed some viscous ground-and-pound forcing the referee to halt the bout at 1:10 of round two.
In other action, Nah-Shon Burrell continued to excite fans with a knock-out victory over a very game newcomer, Daryl Harris who was making his pro debut. Although it was a slugfest in the first stanza, Burrell’s experience and power seemed to be the difference and he eventually got the knock-out victory at 1:32 of round two. Fan favorite Ozzy Dugulubgov made his presence known in the CFFC welterweight division after his non-stop attack over Kevin Horowitz. From the beginning bell to the stoppage, Dugulubgov’s attacks were relentless and he was comfortable on the feet or on the ground. This one came to an end after a thunderous knee at 43 seconds into round 2.
