Ringside MMA

(PRESS RELEASE) -- Ringside MMA would like alert fans to its pending incursion into the greater Quebec area for our 8th gala, titled Ringside 8: Invasion, which will be held at the Gilles-Tremblay Arena in Beauport located on 1011 Ave Larue on August 7th, 2010. For the first time ever in the capital region of Quebec, Ringside will bring professional ultimate fighting directly to the city’s passionate MMA fans. Several local fighters will get their opportunity to rise to the occasion on one of the most exciting fight cards that has ever been held to date. In addition, several young prospects will be sure to impress the crowd in their long awaited professional debuts.
In the main event, hailing from Quebec, is UFC veteran Jonathan “The Road Warrior” Goulet (22-11-0), who made it his choice to return to the local MMA scene and its fans which have continued to support him throughout his career, despite having several offers to fight abroad. A native of Victoriaville, Goulet has been training out of Montreal with some of the best fighters from around the world, and is looking to bounce back from a loss at the hands of Marcus Davis on May 8th after coming off a long layoff from suffering an injury during his fight against Mike Swick. Prior to that last fight, Goulet had been on a 3 fight win streak against Dan Chambers, Paul Georgieff and Kuniyoshi Hironaka. He was also the recipient of a UFC Fight of the Night bonus after his win at UFC 83. Thirsty for a another win and well known for his courage, Goulet has always proven that his best fights have been in his province of Quebec, where the roar of the crowd infuses him with the fury and rage to win. Goulet will be the biggest challenge faced yet by his opponent, rising star Matt MacGrath (8-3-0), who, like Goulet, is highly skilled on the ground. MacGrath is a Judoka specialist from Price Edward Island, and is regarded as one of the best Canadian prospects in his weight class.

In the co-main event of the night, the featherweight (145 pound) championship will be on the line as Canadian Mitch Gagnon (6-1-0) will defend his belt against American John Franchi (5-2-0). This will be Mitch Gagnon’s first title defence, since winning the featherweight tile in April over Guillaume Lamarche by way of guillotine choke early in the contest. Currently riding a 4 fight win streak, with his only loss coming by judges’ decision back in 2009, Gagnon wins come against the likes of Carpine, Harrison, and Bernadel, before being crowned Ringside’s first ever featherweight champion after his victory over Lamarche. His opponent, Franchi, began his professional MMA career with 5 consecutive victories. His start was so impressive, that he quickly earned a spot in the 1FL, and subsequently the prestigious WEC. After winning his first fight in the WEC against Mike Budnik, Franchi suffered losses in his next two fights against veterans Manny Gamburyan and Cub Swanson. With the Ringside title up for grabs, this will literally be Franchi’s golden opportunity to find his path to victory.

On the main card, Quebec’s Guillaume Fortier (2-2-0) will face a yet to be named opponent. Holding wins over Erik Dumaine and Pierre-Etienne Marcoux, Fortier suffered a loss in June against Dwight Sutherland in Winnipeg. He also, no doubt, wants to get back to his winning ways.

Also, Drummondville’s Gillaume Lamarche (6-3-0) will find himself facing the unbeaten Tristan Johnson (5-0-0). Lamarche, despite being a kickboxing specialist, won 5 of his 6 fights by submission, and he will be looking to bounce back from losing a chance at gold against Mitch Gagnon this past April. Lamarche knows that he is no more than 2 wins away from earning a second chance at the title. Moreover, he will be motivated by his desire to avenge the loss that his teammate Eric Leclerc suffered at the hands of Johnson in 2008. The Darmouth native followed that up with another win in his last fight against Brad Duguay in August, 2009. Inactive since then, Johnson will be looking to pick this pick up where he left off.

Next up will be a war between Erik Dumaine (2-1-0) and Stephane Bernadel (5-2-0). In his last fight, Dumaine showcased himself with a TKO victory over Mikael Pellerin. For his part, Bernadel may have suffered a loss by guillotine choke against Gagnon in December of 2009, but he came right back with a win against Justin Smethurst in April. Molded in the image of his teammate Guillaume Lamarche, who has already fought Bernadel himself, Dumaine feels that he has all the tools required to beat an opponent he feels he knows very well. However, Bernadel, well known for his striking abilities, has grown as a fighter, and has added two submission victories to his record since that earlier fight against Lamarche. This will be a battle between two great strikers, both with ability to surprise the fight fans, in a contest for which is it impossible to predict the outcome.

There will be a total of 10 explosive fights presented on this card, which will also see Kevin Morin (3-2-0) take on Steven Rogers (4-2-0), local prospect Guillaume Vigneau from Quebec making his professional debut against David Fraser (1-3-0) from Riviere-du-Loup, the promising Keven Tremblay, also from Quebec, making his own debut against Tommy Cote from Victoriaville, Levis Labrie from Montreal will face Aaron Bellemare from Barrie, Ontario, as well as David Lafond from Sherbrooke, will fight Michael Karkula (1-0-0) from Toronto.
