Caporal, Jumabieke notch KO wins at RUFF 5, PingYuan bests Zhang

Caporal silenced the Hohhot crowd, and critics of his striking
game, by knocking out hometown favorite Wu HaoTian in the RUFF 5,
MMA H.E.A.T. main event.
Caporal, who improves to 3-0 inside the RUFF cage with the win, came out with his usual game plan in the first round, the BJJ black belt setting up a textbook slam and takedown with a quick jab combination early on. Wu then battled off his back and attempted to take Caporal’s neck, before the two stood back up to finish the round by trading knees in the clinch.
In the second frame, however, the Hong Kong-based Caporal employed
a vastly different strategy. Choosing to trade strikes with his
taller opponent, Caporal absorbed a few punches, and then found his
range to land a huge right that sent Wu crashing to the mat at
1:47.
“I tried to take him down but he defended good,” explained Caporal. “I trained to strike [in this fight] and my boxing is better now . . . now it’s time to forget this fight and focus on the next one.”
Jiang looked strong and methodical out of the gate, keeping his distance before a takedown attempt, followed by a jab. Jumabieke countered, landing a leg kick, before pivoting to deliver the “Ducati Knockout of the Night.”
Now 4-0 inside the RUFF cage, Jumabieke, who had a very difficult weight cut for RUFF 5, moves one step closer toward earning a spot in the 2013 RMB 1,000,000 Super Fight.
“I wasn’t training for a month and [had to come down from] 74 kg this time,” commented Jumabieke. “It was tough for me.”
Earlier on the main card, Liu PingYuan earned a hard-fought split decision win over Zhang MeiXuan, 29-28, 29-28, 28-29, avenging his previous loss to Zhang at RUFF: Genesis.
Liu, who has now won three straight contests inside the RUFF cage and improves to 3-2 overall, came out with his usual dynamic style, boxing his way inside, before landing a number of takedowns.
With a deep guillotine choke in place as time expired in the first round, Liu was unable to convert on his best submission attempt of the evening, allowing Zhang to storm back with is own crisp strikes, and armbar, guillotine, and ankle lock attempts.
The pair of scrappy flyweights traded shots for the full 15 minutes, tagging each other constantly with punches to the head and body, but Liu’s combination of aggression, cage control, striking, takedowns, and submission attempts proved to be too much.
“My technique was better tonight than the first time we fought,” offered Liu. “My skills have improved, I’m more well rounded, so this time I was able to win the decision.”
The penultimate fight on the RUFF 5 main card, the promotion’s first live, televised event, featured featherweights Wang Guan and Yuan ChunBo, who tentatively paced around the cage for the majority of their three rounds.
While Wang (5-0 RUFF) unanimously took the decision, 30-27, 30,27, 30-27, the fight lacked action, as Wang avoided Yuan’s attempts to bring the fight to the ground, and Yuan refused to trade strikes with Wang.
“People are afraid of my fists and I have an advantage over basically everybody standing,” stated Wang. “My opponent had an advantage on the ground, so there was no reason to go there.”
Featherweight Sandro da Silva then made quick disposal of opponent Xue GuoBin with a vicious assault of hammer fists and elbows that forced Xue to tapout at 2:19 of the first round.
Both fighters came out and exchanged strikes briefly, before going to the ground, where Xue took da Silva’s neck. The Macau-based Brazilian then slipped out of the guillotine attempt, and began a ground and pound attack that ultimately earned him the win, his first inside the RUFF cage.
“I feel fantastic. I really needed that win for my career,” added da Silva. “I had a great camp . . . and the Sanda team from Hong Kong helped me prepare.”
During the undercard, bantamweights Ayideng Jumyai and Lü ZhenHong battled through an epic matchup that was named “MMA H.E.A.T. Fight of the Night.”
A three-round standup war, Ayideng and Lü exchanged brutal shots in the evening’s first contest, with the Xi’An product edging out a split decision win, 30-27, 29-28, 28-29.
Improving to 3-2 inside the RUFF cage, Ayideng went straight to work on Lü, landing a barrage of punch combinations, drawing first blood.
Lü, making his first appearance in the RUFF cage, remained calm and regrouped, launching his own offensive of head kicks, punches, and knees from the clinch, but ultimately Ayideng prevailed, landing more significant strikes and controlling the cage.
With RUFF 5 in the books, the promotion is now preparing for its next fight leading up to the 2013 RMB 1,000,000 Super Fight, but the 13-fight marathon, which was streamed live worldwide, was a clear indicator of the vast improvements made by Chinese MMA fighters during the last twelve months.
“The guys that fight for RUFF are some of the best athletes in China . . . the quality is just getting higher and higher and it’s just gonna keep going up,” commented RUFF founder Joel Resnick. “It was the first time ever that there was a live combat sporting event from China that went all over world . . . it’s taken a long time, but we’re finally getting the recognition we deserve.”
