Yoel Romero Injured, Chris Camozzi Faces ‘Jacare’ Souza at UFC on Fox 15
For the second time in less than two months, a scheduled
middleweight clash between Yoel Romero
and Ronaldo
“Jacare” Souza has been canceled.
According to a report from MMAFighting.com, Romero suffered a ligament and meniscus tear in his knee during training and must pull out of his April 18 UFC on Fox 15 clash with “Jacare.” As a result, Chris Camozzi will step in on approximately one week’s notice to face the Brazilian. The new matchup was announced during Saturday’s UFC Fight Night card in Poland. Camozzi and Souza previously met at UFC on FX 8 in May 2013, where the Brazilian won via first-round submission. Camozzi was released from the UFC last year after four consecutive losses. He last competed on the regional circuit, earning a victory over Jeremy Kimball this past November.
Romero and Souza were originally supposed to square off at UFC 184
on Feb. 28, but “Jacare” had to withdraw from the contest due to
pneumonia.
Both Souza and Romero rank among the top contenders in the division. Souza is currently riding a seven-fight winning streak, including a submission of Gegard Mousasi in his most recent outing at UFC Fight Night this past September. Romero, who has won five straight fights, was last seen defeating Tim Kennedy via third-round TKO at UFC 178.
UFC on Fox 15 takes place at the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J., and is headlined by a pivotal middleweight encounter between Luke Rockhold and Lyoto Machida.
