World Series of Fighting Inks Ex-UFC Lightweight Jacob Volkmann

The World Series of Fighting has signed former UFC lightweight Jacob Volkmann to a multi-fight deal.

Sherdog.com confirmed the signing with a source close to the Las Vegas-based promotion following an initial report from MMAFighting.com. Volkmann was recently cut from the UFC along with 15 other fighters following his defeat to Bobby Green earlier this month at UFC 156.

Prior to that setback, Volkmann, 32, had gone 6-1 as a lightweight, posting five straight wins over the likes of Danny Castillo and Antonio McKee before submitting to a triangle-armbar at the hands of British submission specialist Paul Sass. Known for his grinding style and superior wrestling, “Christmas” owns eight of his 15 career wins by submission and has yet to record a knockout in five years as a pro.

The WSOF’s Nov. 3 debut aired live on the NBC Sports Network and saw Anthony Johnson deliver a brutal, one-punch knockout to Bellator veteran D.J. Linderman before former UFC heavyweight champion Andrei Arlovski iced Devin Cole in the evening’s main event. A former welterweight-cum-light heavyweight, Johnson will now move up to the heavyweight division to take on Arlovski in the WSOF 2 headliner. That March 23 event will also see Tyson Nam and Marlon Moraes square off in a pivotal bantamweight affair from Revel Casino in Atlantic City, N.J.

The WSOF 2 undercard will stream live on Sherdog.com.
