Alexandre Pimentel vs. Jade Porter

Round 1

Porter hops around the outside, exchanging punches with southpaw Pimentel, who stalks out from the center and sprinkles in leg kicks. Pimentel is getting the better of the boxing through the first half of the opening round, and now he adds a hard body kick to the mix. Porter is committed to the outside, keeping his back to the cage and even resetting there after stepping to the center. Finally, with 90 seconds left in the round, Pimentel gets inside behind a left hand and clinches Porter against the fence. The Brazilian works for a takedown and gets it with 60 seconds left on the clock. Fifteen seconds later, Porter is back on his feet, pressed against the fence and eating a knee. Pimentel closes the distance in the last 10 seconds, but Porter makes him pay with the last strike of the round, a hard left hand upstairs.

Round 2

Photo: Keith Mills/Sherdog.com

Pimentel caught Porter in a triangle choke.
Not much action in the first 90 seconds of round two, save for Pimentel slipping on a kick and Porter refusing to follow to the ground. Porter is still hopping around Pimentel, trying to dip in and out with punches but still having trouble navigating the taller man’s reach. Pimentel shoots a double-leg against the fence, sprawled on by Porter at first. Pimentel pulls him off the fence to finish the takedown, then jumps on Porter’s back as the Power MMA fighter stands up. Porter stays cool and eventually shakes Pimentel off his back with about 90 seconds left.

They resume the give-and-take striking, this time with Porter sticking a combination in Pimentel’s face before the end of the round.

Sherdog Scores

Tristen Critchfield scores the round 10-9 Pimentel
Chris Nelson scores the round 10-9 Pimentel
Mike Whitman scores the round 10-9 Pimentel

Round 3

Porter is letting go of his punches a bit more as the final round starts, though many of the shots are going off Pimentel’s gloves and forearms. It’s still Porter on the outside, Pimentel working from the middle until two minutes into the round, when the Brazilian drags Porter to the canvas. Pimentel leaps on Porter’s back and immediately starts trying to soften him up for a rear-naked choke. Porter nearly gets caught as he tries to put his back on the mat, but he pulls his head out and tries to slip out the back door. It’s a no-go, as Pimentel transitions beautifully to a triangle and pulls down on Porter’s head to get the tap.

The Official Result

Alexandre Pimentel def. Jade Porter via Submission (Triangle Choke) R3 3:05

Nick LoBosco vs. Fabio Mello

Round 1

Photo: K. Mills/Sherdog.com

LoBosco dropped bombs all over Mello.
Mello finds success early with loud inside low kicks and punching combinations as he works the American around the perimeter. LoBosco catches Mello leaning left and drills him with a crushing right high kick that sends the Brazilian veteran to the floor. LoBosco can’t pound him out at first, with Mello keeping him at bay with a long guard.

After a few seconds of punching, LoBosco lands the lights-out shot that puts Mello to sleep and forces referee Jorge Alonso to intervene.

The Official Result

Nick LoBosco def. Fabio Mello via KO (Head Kick and Punches) R1 2:02

Josh Rettinghouse vs. Alexis Vila

Round 1

Rettinghouse moves in and out on Vila, peppering the Cuban with snappy punches and hard leg kicks. Vila seems to be having some trouble navigating the younger, quicker man until about 90 seconds into the bout, when he slams Rettinghouse to the ground at the base of the fence. Vila stands while Rettinghouse is still on the ground and snares Rettinghouse in a front headlock. “The Exorcist” tries to squeeze and finish with the guillotine choke, but Rettinghouse stays calm, loosens the grip and stands up to escape. Rettinghouse gets right back to jabbing and leg-kicking, while Vila stalks him, threatening with power punches. A hard knee lands for Vila, but Rettinghouse drives through it to put the former Olympic wrestler on his back. Rettinghouse passes to side control on Vila’s left with just about one minute left. Vila powers his way out of the bad spot and gets back to his feet, where he begins trying to take off Rettinghouse’s head with punches. Rettinghouse looks drastically slower in the closing seconds and finishes the round whiffing on a tired spinning back-fist.

Sherdog Scores

Round 2

Photo: K. Mills/Sherdog.com

Rettinghouse weathered Vila's storm for 15 minutes.
Rettinghouse has a little more pep in his step at the start of round two, moving forward on Vila with quick punches and keeping a steady stream of leg kicks coming. Vila is still throwing power punches but just can’t find his mark on the speedier fighter; when the overhand right does get through, it goes off Rettinghouse’s glove. Rettinghouse repeatedly catches Vila’s leg and trips him to the ground, though Vila won’t stay there. With 90 seconds to go in round two, Vila finally gets Rettinghouse’s attention with a partially blocked right up top.

Rettinghouse lands a hard low kick outside, eats an overhand right from Vila. The bantamweights work near the fence, Rettinghouse covering up as Vila sends a pair of powerful punches off his hands.

Sherdog Scores

Tristen Critchfield scores the round 10-9 Rettinghouse
Chris Nelson scores the round 10-9 Rettinghouse
Mike Whitman scores the round 10-9 Rettinghouse

Round 3

Vila changes up tactics, putting Rettinghouse on the ground and then moving to take his back. The wrestler stalls out, unable to secure the back with Rettinghouse pressing it to the fence, so Vila settles for driving nasty knees to his opponent’s legs. Rettinghouse gets to his feet and a clinch ensues wherein referee Troy Waugh warns Vila against grabbing Rettinghouse’s shorts. Vila ducks under a spinning back-fist and takes down Rettinghouse at the fence again. Rettinghouse rolls out and back to his feet, then attacks Vila with an uppercut and a flying knee. Vila grabs hold of his leaping opponent and drives Rettinghouse to the ground with about two minutes left in the fight. Rettinghouse kicks him away and stands, eating an uppercut as he stands. Unfazed, Rettinghouse unloads a combination on Vila, then shoots a double-leg which Vila sprawls all over. Vila holds him in north-south position and drills Rettinghouse’s shoulder with a big knee. They stand with 20 seconds to go and Vila ducks another spinning back-fist to hit a final takedown at the bell.

Sherdog Scores

Tristen Critchfield scores the round 10-9 Vila (29-28 Rettinghouse)
Chris Nelson scores the round 10-9 Vila (29-28 Rettinghouse)

The Official Result

Chad Robichaux vs. Andrew Yates

Round 1

Robichaux gets an early takedown, then snares Yates in a guillotine as the taller fighter tries to scramble up. “Robo” tries to finish the choke as he pulls guard, and while he uses the headlock to control Yaves for the better part of 90 seconds, he can’t get a tap. After abandoning the guillotine, Robichaux throws up a triangle, but Yates slams his way out of this and the bantamweights stand again. Another takedown goes for Robichaux, and this time Yates throws up his legs for a triangle or armbar attempt. Robichaux stands up, then rushes back to keep Yates pressed against the fence. Yates gets slammed back to the ground, and Robichaux drops a couple heavy elbows before Yates drives forward on a double-leg and puts Robichaux on his posterior at the base of the fence. Robichaux tries the guillotine and pulls guard again, but he’s in a bad position to finish with Yates in half-guard. Instead, Robichaux sweeps to top position and finishes the round with a couple short, rough right hands to Yates’ face.

Sherdog Scores

Tristen Critchfield scores the round 10-9 Robichaux

Mike Whitman scores the round 10-9 Robichaux

Round 2

Photo: K. Mills/Sherdog.com

Robichaux put Yates away in round two.
Yates comes out striking, but it’s less than 40 seconds before Robichaux has him on the ground against the fence. Robichaux backs out, then dives back down with a thunderous right hand which Yates tries to snare for an armbar. They wind up in an awkward north-south position with Robichaux straddling Yates, who then goes to his knees. Robichaux tries to ride Yates and set up an armbar, but Yates sniffs it out and drives forward, putting Robichaux on his knees and then his back. Robichaux shrimps underneath, controlling Yates’ head until the Texan has an opportunity to sweep.

Robichaux applies a north-south choke and Yates goes limp, forcing referee Jorge Alonso to stop the fight.

The Official Result

Chad Robichaux def. Andrew Yates via Technical Submission (North-South Choke) R2 4:09

Luiz Firmino vs. Jacob Volkmann

Round 1

Firmino is already across the cage by the time ref Troy Waugh calls a start to the fight, though it doesn’t result in anything as Volkmann circles out. Volkmann fakes level-changes on a couple shots, and the lightweights trade knees in the clinch. Volkmann stays on the outside, coming in behind a leg kick to take Firmino the ground and then repeating the task when Firmino stands up. “Buscape” kicks him away midway through the round and scrambles to his feet, still held against the fence by the UFC vet. Firmino hits a takedown and holds Volkmann near the cage in the final minute of the round, but can’t do much to capitalize on the position before the end of the frame.

Sherdog Scores

Tristen Critchfield scores the round 10-9 Firmino
Chris Nelson scores the round 10-9 Firmino
Mike Whitman scores the round 10-9 Firmino

Round 2

Photo: K. Mills/Sherdog.com

Firmino outpointed UFC veteran Volkmann.
Firmino hits an early takedown, then tries a guillotine when Volkmann tries to scramble up. The choke doesn’t stick, but Buscape scores with a knee before Volkmann gets out of range. Volkmann has a shot stuffed, but he remains clinched and tries to bully Firmino against the cage. The Brazilian shoves him off, then bangs Volkmann’s body with right hands when “Feelgood” tries the Thai clinch. Now it’s Volkmann scoring a takedown, then denying a sweep from Firmino. A brabo choke attempt from Volkmann won’t stick, and it allows Firmino to pull out and set up in half-guard.

Buscape seems content to hold Volkmann on the ground in the final 90 seconds of the round, and he does exactly that.

Sherdog Scores

Tristen Critchfield scores the round 10-9 Firmino
Chris Nelson scores the round 10-9 Firmino
Mike Whitman scores the round 10-9 Firmino

Round 3

The lightweights begin the final round in the clinch, and Firmino nails Volkmann with a knee to the gut before hitting another takedown. Volkmann tries to go over the top and set up an inverted triangle choke which Firmino is quick to defend. The Brazilian slips out the back and winds up in side control on Volkmann’s left. Again, Firmino is inactive from top position, drawing a warning from referee Waugh. It’s all positional control from Firmino, who hooks the left leg of Volkmann while pinning down the right to take away the wrestler’s base. Volkmann puts Firmino in open guard with 80 seconds remaining, but Firmino is back in side control with 45 seconds left. Volkmann regains guard a few seconds later and throws elbows from his back for the final 10 seconds of the fight.

Sherdog Scores

Tristen Critchfield scores the round 10-10 (30-28 Firmino)
Chris Nelson scores the round 10-9 Firmino (30-27 Firmino)

Miguel Torres vs. Pablo Alfonso

Round 1

Photo: K. Mills/Sherdog.com

Torres is a shell of his former self.
Torres catches the incoming Alfonso with a grazing right hand, then takes a stiff kick to the body from the “Hurricane.” Alfonso keeps the kicks coming with a chopping strike low and inside, then shoves away the taller man when Torres tries to get inside. Torres gets clipped with a punch that puts him on rubbery legs, and Alfonso tries to demolish him with uppercuts against the fence. Torres falls to the ground, so Alfonso tries to pound him out there, to no avail. Instead, Alfonso settles for top position on the suddenly recovered Torres, who is fishing for an arm-in guillotine from guard.

Alfonso pulls his head out and stands, then drops to guard with a guillotine attempt of his own. This one is deep, and Torres struggles briefly before tapping out.

The Official Result

Pablo Alfonso def. Miguel Torres via Submission (Guillotine Choke) R1 3:05

Justin Gaethje vs. Dan Lauzon

Round 1

Photo: K. Mills/Sherdog.com

Gaethje completely destroyed Lauzon.
Gaethje opens up with an inside leg kick, ducks under a high kick from Lauzon and then has a body kick caught. Lauzon keeps hold of the leg but can’t capitalize, and Gaethje pulls the limb loose. Lauzon scores over the top with a hard left hook behind the ear, but Gaethje keeps coming and clinches Lauzon against the fence. A spinning elbow connects for Gaethje, then a ripping hook to the body. Good head movement from Gaethje, who is slipping most of Lauzon’s power punches and countering with hard, straight lefts. Gaethje takes a high kick on his shoulder, eats a left straight on the end of a combination.

Gaethje goes body-head, then shoves Lauzon against the fence to deliver a pair of knees in the clinch. Another punch is ducked by Gaethje, who just misses with a short, standing elbow. Lauzon finds a home for his left hand but simultaneously gets chopped with an inside leg kick which has the Massachusetts native limping on his right leg. Gaethje clinches up with 80 seconds on the clock, and Lauzon raises his right leg to avoid any more damage. Right hands land for Gaethje before breaking off from the clinch, and the next low kick has Lauzon limping badly, then falling to the ground. Lauzon gets back up, but he’s not putting any weight on his leg and Gaethje is targeting it now. Lauzon falls again, stands and checks the next kick. He tries to fire back, but there’s not much power behind the punches now. Gaethje slips on his last kick, allowing Lauzon to pounce and finish the round on top.

Sherdog Scores

Tristen Critchfield scores the round 10-9 Gaethje
Chris Nelson scores the round 10-9 Gaethje
Mike Whitman scores the round 10-9 Gaethje

Round 2

Lauzon is checked by the physician and cleared to continue in round two, but Gaethje comes out targeting the legs and it may not be long for “The Upgrade.” Gaethje connects with an uppercut and walks forward on Lauzon with hands by his side, eating a straight right. Lauzon falls trying for a takedown, stands back up and slugs Gaethje with a straight left, then an uppercut. Gaethje is still going after the legs, and Lauzon is somehow still staying vertical. A huge right hook on the temple stuns Lauzon, and an uppercut finishes the fight as Lauzon flops to the canvas. Lauzon is out, and referee Jorge Alonso steps in to wave it off.

The Official Result

Justin Gaethje def. Dan Lauzon via KO (Punches) R2 1:40

Jon Fitch vs. Marcelo Alfaya

Round 1

Fitch takes 20 seconds before moving in to clinch with Alfaya on the fence, but the Brazilian reverses the position and puts the former UFC fighter on his back with a double-leg. Fitch gets a knee inside, keeping Alfaya in half-guard, so Alfaya waits until Fitch turns his back and then whips around to secure back-control. Fitch’s left arm is trapped in Alfaya’s body triangle, and the American Kickboxing Academy fighter tries to control Alfaya’s right arm to defend a potential choke. Fitch frees his arm and gets to his knees, but Alfaya is still on the back with a body triangle cinched up and more than two minutes to go. Fitch has his chin tucked, defending the rear-naked choke and peeling away Alfaya’s hands, which draws a warning from referee Troy Waugh for Fitch not to grab the inside of Alfaya’s gloves. Right hands score for Alfaya over the shoulder as Fitch breathes heavily. Alfaya is warned for an illegal elbow to the top of Fitch’s head. With 20 seconds left, Fitch peels away the body triangle and explodes to his feet, then tries a single-leg which he cannot finish.

Sherdog Scores

Mike Whitman scores the round 10-9 Alfaya

Round 2

Photo: Keith Mills/Sherdog.com

Fitch slipped by Alfaya after 15 minutes.
Fitch gets an early takedown and begins pounding on Alfaya, who rolls underneath for a heel hook which doesn’t stick. Alfaya gets to his feet and wraps up the waist of Fitch, who lands a couple more punches to the side of the head before being taken down. Alfaya takes the back again, but this time Fitch twists loose immediately and scrambles up to press Alfaya against the cage. Alfaya turns it around and tries for a takedown of his own, defended by Fitch, who widens his base against the fence and throws sporadic punches to the Brazilian’s body as they stall out midway through the round.

Alfaya is just clinging to the high double-leg, keeping Fitch on the fence; he finally elevates the AKA fighter and finishes the takedown inside the final two minutes. Again, Alfaya jumps on Fitch’s back, and again Fitch escapes. Back on the feet, Fitch lands an uppercut, ducks a right hand from Alfaya and comes back up to snipe with jabs. Alfaya scores with an uppercut, then takes a left hand on the liver. Both welterweights are throwing punches at the bell, neither landing anything clean.

Sherdog Scores

Tristen Critchfield scores the round 10-9 Fitch
Chris Nelson scores the round 10-9 Fitch
Mike Whitman scores the round 10-9 Fitch

Round 3

The 170-pounders resume their position from the previous round, with Alfaya shooting for a takedown against the fence and Fitch defending it well. They break away quickly this time, and now it’s Fitch in the driver’s seat with the striking, plunking the Brazilian with clean punches and forcing Alfaya to shoot again. Fitch defends this one as well, breaks off and hits Alfaya with a straight right before clinching against the cage. Alfaya reverses the position and tries another double-leg with just over two minutes remaining in the fight. Alfaya gives it up with 1:35 left on the clock, and Fitch walks him down with long punches which are accurate, if not that hard. After a couple of these long punches, a heavy right hand drops Alfaya to the ground, where Fitch blasts away from above with four or five more punches. Alfaya scrambles up and goes for one more double-leg with 30 seconds left. He gets Fitch to the ground and tries to secure the back again, but this time he slips right off and Fitch finishes the fight on top.

Marlon Moraes vs. Carson Beebe

Round 1

Photo: K. Mills/Sherdog.com

Moraes plowed right through Beebe.
Beebe sticks his left hand in Moraes’ face and feints a level-change for a shot. Moraes stands him up, cracks the wrestler with a pair of punches and snuffs out the actual takedown attempt that comes next. Moraes catches Beebe coming in with an uppercut, then a right hook on the temple that takes out Beebe’s equilibrium. The next punch from Moraes is a left hand on the chin which sends Beebe to the ground, unconscious, and sends referee Jorge Alonso into action.

The Official Result

Marlon Moraes def. Carson Beebe via KO (Punches) R1 0:32

WSOF Welterweight Championship Fight:
Josh Burkman vs. Steve Carl

Round 1

Troy Waugh is the referee for tonight’s championship main event. Burkman goes low and inside with a pair of leg kicks, then has a right high kick blocked. Carl creeps forward with a wide stance, grabs hold of a kick and shoves Burkman against the fence, but Burkman turns it around and slams Carl to the floor with a waistlock. Carl quickly works back to his feet, pushes forward and has a left high kick blocked before changing levels for a takedown attempt on the fence. Burkman gets a leg inside and trips Carl to the ground, then sets up on top in his guard. Carl attempts to kick him away, then throws up his legs for an armbar attempt. Burkman slips out of this, so Carl changes it up and tries a toe hold. Burkman easily pulls out of this, and he spends the final 20 seconds of the round in side control.

Neither man seems willing to commit fully on their strikes early in the frame. Carl shoots in and gets stuffed by Burkman, who creeps around the outside while Carl works from the center with a low guard. Carl closes the gap and gets a takedown at the base of the cage, then advances to full mount for a split second before Burkman gets a leg in. Carl works for an armbar inside the final minute of the round, passing to mount again in the closing seconds.

Carl takes the back this time, sinking in both hooks and digging for a rear-naked choke. His right forearm is underneath Burkman’s chin, but Burkman is controlling the left wrist, making it impossible for Carl to cinch the choke and finish. Burkman gets his head loose and scrambles to his feet, then changes levels for a single-leg on the fence. Carl tries to hit the switch and winds up on his knees with Burkman grabbing a headlock, hunting for a guillotine. Burkman rolls on top to try and finish the guillotine but can’t find the angle.

Burkman hits a takedown and dodges a guillotine attempt from Carl as they hit the ground. Once there, however, Carl loops his left leg behind Burkman’s head and then whips his right leg over the top to cinch up the triangle choke. Burkman appears to tap out, but referee Troy Waugh doesn’t see it, and the choke puts him to sleep. With a technical submission victory in round four, Steve Carl becomes the inaugural World Series of Fighting welterweight champion.

Francisco France vs. Hans Stringer

Round 1

Stringer walks down France jabbing his way inside. France tries to circle away but is pushed up along the cage where he eats a few shots in close. He extricates himself from the clinch and circles away some more. Stringer fires a low kick right to the groin of France who was in the process of throwing a right hand. He followed thru with the punch but then collapsed in pain. Referee Jorge Alonso steps in and gives him a reprieve. France is ready to go after a short respite and the action recommences. France pushes Stringer up against the cage but the Dutchman turns the tables on him and uses a single to turn his back to the fence. Stringer works the body a bit and knees the inside of France’s right leg. Not much going on with 30 seconds left as the fighters continue to clinch along the cage.

France punches his way out for a moment then back again they go. Stringer goes back to the well one more time and it may have been one time to many. France times his entry and drips him with a big right hand. France pounces and clobbers him a couple more times before establishing position and taking Stringer’s back. France hammers away from back control, Stringer tries to turn in and France takes mount with 60 seconds to go in the round. Stringer gives his back up again and gets to his knees. He lands a hard elbow in the clinch and searches for more openings. France uses the break in action to spin Stringer’s back to the cage with 30 seconds to go.
