Women’s Champion Ronda Rousey, Challenger Liz Carmouche Cleared for UFC 157 Headliner

They have blazed an unlikely trail to the Ultimate Fighting Championship. Now, all that remains is the fight, the first between two women inside the Octagon.

Women’s bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey tipped the scales at 134.6 pounds for her historic battle with Liz Carmouche (133.6) in the UFC 157 main event on Saturday at the Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif. The eight other participants on the main draw, including light heavyweight co-headliners Dan Henderson (205) and Lyoto Machida (202), also hit their intended marks at Friday’s official weigh-in.

Unbeaten as a professional, Rousey has secured all six of her wins by first-round armbar-induced submission, five of them in less than a minute. The 26-year-old Californian last appeared under the Strikeforce banner in March, when she needed just 54 seconds to dispatch Canadian Sarah Kaufman at the Valley View Casino Center in San Diego. Now front and center in the women’s mixed martial arts movement, Rousey was the first American woman to medal in Olympic judo, as she captured bronze at the 2008 Summer Games in Beijing.

Carmouche will enter the Octagon on the strength of a two-fight winning streak. The 28-year-old Marine last competed inside the Invicta Fighting Championships promotion in July, when she submitted Kaitlin Young with a second-round rear-naked choke at Memorial Hall in Kansas City, Kan. A Team Hurricane Awesome export, Carmouche has delivered five of her eight professional victories by knockout or technical knockout.

UFC 157 “Rousey vs. Carmouche” -- which airs live on pay-per-view at 10 p.m. ET/7 p.m. PT -- also features a bantamweight rematch pitting former World Extreme Cagefighting champion Urijah Faber (136) against the Tristar Gym’s Ivan Menjivar (135.6), along with a pair of welterweight tilts, as “The Ultimate Fighter” Season 11 winner Court McGee (170) tackles Josh Neer (171) and Josh Koscheck (171) locks horns with onetime EliteXC titleholder Robbie Lawler (171).

Two hours prior, the FX network will carry four preliminary bouts: Brendan Schaub (243) vs. Lavar Johnson (255), Michael Chiesa (156) vs. Anton Kuivanen (156), Dennis Bermudez (145) vs. Matt Grice (145) and Caros Fodor (155) vs. Sam Stout (155). The three remaining undercard matchups will stream to the UFC’s Facebook page at 6:35 p.m. ET/3:35 p.m. PT, as Kenny Robertson (170) collides with Brock Jardine (170), Nah-Shon Burrell (175.8) battles Yuri Villefort (170) and Jon Manley (171) toes the line against Neil Magny (171).
