A featherweight bout between Will Chope and Diego Brandao has been removed from the UFC Fight Night 39 card, the promotion announced on Sunday morning.

The news comes on the heels of a Bleacher Report article revealing that Chope had been discharged from the Air Force for assaulting his wife and threatening her with a knife in November 2009. According to Air Force Court of Appeals documents obtained by Bleacher Report, Chope assaulted his wife multiple times before the final instance resulted in his discharge.

Multiple outlets have since reported that Chope has been released by the UFC. Brandao, meanwhile, will be paid his show and win money.

Chope recently posted the following statement on Facebook:

“My fight has been canceled for a 5 year old mistake I made. I am truly sorry to all the fans and will do everything I can to make this right. I have spoken with my ex-wife on the phone and she supports what I am doing and together we will make a formal press release as soon as I get back to the USA on Wednesday.”

Chope, 23, made his Octagon debut at UFC Fight Night 34 on Jan. 4, losing to Max Holloway via technical knockout in the second round. The 6-foot-4 California native, who trained with the Phuket Top Team in Thailand, is 19-6 as a professional.
