Weekend Rundown: Injured Junie Folds at Wild Bill's

A day after he failed to make weight for his latest outing inside the cage, Junie Allen Browning quit in his corner after just one round.

Victimized by an apparent groin injury, Browning threw in the proverbial towel prior to the start of the second round in his technical knockout loss to Aaron Hall in the Wild Bill’s Fight Night 25 headliner on Friday at Wild Bill’s Atlanta in Duluth, Ga. Browning put the match in jeopardy a little more than 24 hours earlier when he showed up to the weigh-in heavy and refused to lose the additional weight at Hall’s request.

A semi-finalist on Season 8 of “The Ultimate Fighter,” the talented but troubled 24-year-old was released by the UFC last fall after he ran afoul of the law. Browning was arrested in Las Vegas on Oct. 6 for allegedly assaulting a group of nurses at an area hospital, this on the heels of an apparent suicide attempt during which he ingested 16 pills of the anti-anxiety drug Klonopin.

Browning, a Kentucky native, defeated David Kaplan and earned “Fight of the Night” honors at his UFC debut in December 2008. He has ridden on a rocky road ever since, losing two of his past three fights.

Taylor Submits Day at ‘Vengeance’

Exiled “The Ultimate Fighter” Season 7 finalist Jesse Taylor submitted fellow UFC veteran Jason Day with a first-round rear-naked choke in the Aggression MMA 2 “Vengeance” main event on Friday at the Edmonton Expo Centre in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.

Taylor, a two-time collegiate All-American wrestler, brought an end to a two-fight skid with his first win in nearly seven months. Based out of Team Quest, the 27-year-old Californian has won eight of his 10 bouts since being released by the UFC following his July 2008 submission to C.B. Dollaway at UFC Fight Night 14.

Day -- outspoken about his desire to compete at the UFC’s forthcoming show in Vancouver, British Columbia -- did little to help his cause. The 28-year-old Canadian Martial Arts Centre product has lost three of his four fights since he debuted in the UFC with a dazzling TKO victory over Alan Belcher two years ago.

Meanwhile, once-beaten International Fight League veteran Claude Patrick posted his 10th straight win at “Vengeance,” as he submitted Matt MacGrath with a third-round guillotine choke. The end came 2:29 into round three.

Neer Victorious at Shark Fights 8

Josh Neer coaxed a tapout from Anselmo Martinez with a first-round rear-naked choke in the Shark Fights 8 main event on Friday at the Fair Park Coliseum in Lubbock, Texas. Martinez, who rode a string of five consecutive wins into the match, met his end 3:05 into round one.

A 26-year-old Pat Miletich protégé, Neer has put together two straight wins since being cut by the UFC following his decision loss to American Top Team’s Gleison Tibau in October. “The Dentist” has now secured 23 of his 27 career victories by knockout, TKO or submission.

Shimizu Upsets Sunabe

Kiyotaka Shimizu upset the world-ranked Mitsuhisa Sunabe by majority decision, as he avenged a 2008 defeat and became the new flyweight King of Pancrase in the co-feature at Pancrase “Passion Tour 1” on Sunday at the Differ Ariake Arena in Tokyo.

Two judges scored it 29-28 in Shimizu’s favor; a third ruled it a 28-28 draw. The 25-year-old has won five of his past six bouts.

Meanwhile, Pride Fighting Championships, UFC and Sengoku veteran Yuki Kondo beat Takenori Sato by unanimous decision to capture the interim middleweight King of Pancrase title. Scores were 30-28 across the board for the 34-year-old Kondo, who has competed against some of the world’s most accomplished mixed martial artists -- including Dan Henderson, Wanderlei Silva, Josh Barnett, Tito Ortiz and Frank Shamrock -- during his 14-year career.

Kondo, a veteran of 81 fights, will meet Ichiro Kanai to establish a unified middleweight King of Pancrase at “Passion Tour 4” on April 29.
