Walker-Carson On for Jan. 29; Miller-Kennedy 3 Unlikely

As expected, 1982 Heisman Trophy winner Herschel Walker will make his return to the Strikeforce cage on Jan. 29, as he takes on Scott Carson at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, Calif.

Sherdog confirmed the rumored bout with sources close to the matchup on Tuesday.

After winning the Heisman Trophy, Walker went on to a successful pro career in the USFL and the NFL before retiring from football in 1997. A black belt in tae kwon do, Walker made his mixed martial arts debut in January, stopping an overmatched Greg Nagy at Strikeforce “Miami.” His bout with Carson was initially to take place on Dec. 4 in St. Louis, but a laceration requiring seven stitches the week prior to the bout forced Walker to withdraw.

Carson is coming off the first and only loss of his career: a first-round knockout at a small show in June. Prior to that defeat, Carson was a perfect 4-0, though his last victory came in 2001. His last bout before his decade-long layoff was at the inaugural WEC show. Carson earned a first-round submission over Bryson Haubrick.

Another bout rumored for Strikeforce's Jan. 29 card was a rubber match between middleweight talents Jason "Mayhem" Miller and Tim Kennedy. According to sources close to the situation, that bout is now unlikely. It's still unclear whether there is any hope of Miller squaring off against welterweight champion Nick Diaz, as was originally speculated. The promotion has not spoken on whether either man will participate in the event.
