WEC 46 Results and Live Play-by-Play

Sherdog.com reports from the Arco Arena in Sacramento, Calif., with WEC 46 results and live play-by-play. In the main event, Jamie Varner and Benson Henderson will square off in a lightweight showdown.

Coty Wheeler vs. Will Campuzano
Round 1
Wheeler shoots after a short exchange but Campuzano repels him easily and tags him with a right hand. Wheeler tries to close the distance but finds himself on the end of more Campuzano punches. Wheeler lands a short inside leg kick that does not deter his opponent who is still throwing heavy punches at every opportunity. Wheeler circles around the outside as Campuzano pursues him. Campuzano throws a knee but Wheeler catches his leg and drags him to the canvas. He locks up an ankle lock but Campuzano shakes loose and gets back to his feet. Wheeler starting to show the effects of Campuzano’s punches, blood is trickling down his face from a cut around his nose. Wheeler tries to get the fight back to the mat but Campuzano scrambles to the top and punishes him with punches and hammer fists until the horn sounds ending the round. Sherdog.com scores the bout 10-9 for Campuzano.

Round 2

Campuzano vs. Wheeler.
Wheeler kicks Campuzano square on the cup and the Texan takes a knee as referee Jason Herzog steps in to allow him to recover. Wheeler locks up a guillotine choke that looks tight. Campuzano fights his way free and busts Wheeler up with punches before getting back to his feet. Campuzano unloads with more shots on the feet, forcing Wheeler to roll for a leg. Campuzano has none of it and sets up in side-control before slamming Wheeler’s bloody face with more leather. Campuzano is landing at will on the feet, he plasters Wheeler with a trio of head-kicks in the final 10 seconds of the round. Sherdog.com scores the round 10-9 for Campuzano.


Round 3
The start of the round is delayed as the ringside physician continues his examination of Wheeler’s apparently broken nose. Wheeler is allowed to continue but his inability to get the fight to the canvas is costing him dearly. Campuzano stalks him from the center of the cage as Wheeler tries to circle away but every time they engage Campuzano is the one finding the mark. Campuzano slams another combination into the blood-streaked face of Wheeler. Wheeler answers with a single-leg takedown attempt but Campuzano shrugs it off easily. Campuzano sprawls on another takedown attempt and elbows him mercilessly as Wheeler tries to finish the takedown. Surprisingly he gets Campuzano to his back with under a minute left but he cannot keep him there. Campuzano lands a hard flying knee that backs Wheeler into the cage. He follows with another knee as Wheeler shoots for a takedown. Wheeler jumps to his feet and narrowly avoids another flying knee. He doesn’t get away from the next one though or the head-kick that followed it. Campuzano raps him with another nasty kick to the head as the horn sounded and saved Wheeler from any more damage. Sherdog.com scores the final round 10-8 for Campuzano.

Official scores are 30-26, 30-27 and 30-27. Campuzano takes the unanimous decision.

Eddie Wineland vs. George Roop
Round 1
Roop fires a front push kick that drives Wineland back to the cage. The former WEC champ answers with a nice two-punch combination that gets Roop’s attention. Wineland lands a winging right hook that buckles Roop who staggers backwards. Wineland flurries but Roop evades him and gets his legs back under him. Wineland lands with another nice right hand but Roop takes this one a little better. Yet another lead right hand catches Roop. Wineland is exploiting a low lead hand over and over. Roop throws a head kick but Wineland blocks it and throws another right but Roop is ready this time and blocks it. Wineland’s head movement is giving Roop fits, he can’t seem to find him cleanly. Wineland charges forward after the 10 second warning and lands a grazing lead right on the horn. Sherdog.com scores the round 10-9 for Wineland.

Wineland vs. Roop.
Round 2
A confident Wineland slams Roop with a body-head combination to get the scoring started in the second. Wineland goes back to the body with a left hook. Roop is moving forward more this round but still can’t find his target. Wineland is still moving well, keeping Roop off balance. Wineland powers another lead right hand to the face of Roop. The much longer Roop still can’t get inside on Wineland who is content to stay on the outside and pick away at his opponent. Wineland takes another round on the Sherdog card, 10-9.



Round 3
Wineland floors Roop with another right hand about a minute into the final round. He tries to finish but Roop gets back to his feet and retreats from trouble. Wineland cracks him with a left hand lead as blood flows from the nose Roop. The pace slows a bit and the crowd shows its dissatisfaction. A slow third round closes with neither fighter willing to take a chance. Sherdog.com scores the round 10-9 for Wineland.

Official scores are 30-27 for Wineland on all three cards.

Mark Hominick vs. Bryan Caraway

Hominick vs. Caraway.
Round 1
Caraway sinks Hominick with a double and settles into his guard. Hominick gets his feet to Caraway’s hips and tries to push him off but is unsuccessful. Caraway stands and tries to pass to side but Hominick gets him back into his guard. Caraway stands again and dodges a pair of upkicks before Caraway drops back into the guard. Hominick tries to sweep to mount but Caraway holds on to the position. Hominick locks up a triangle as Caraway tries to get his base back and manipulates Caraway’s left arm into an armbar and quickly elicited the tapout at 3:48 of the first round.



Wagnney Fabiano vs. Clint Godfrey
Round 1
Godfrey throws a low-kick and circles away. Fabiano patiently waits for an opening. Godfrey lands another kick to the inside of Fabiano’s lead leg before shooting in for a takedown. Fabiano sprawls and takes a front headlock before pushing Godfrey to his back. He tries to mount bout gets caught in half-guard. Fabiano continues to try to pass but keeps getting caught between full and half-guard. Godfrey using an effective butterfly guard to keep Fabiano frustrated. Fabiano works a Kimura with less than 30 seconds left but Godfrey uses his leg to block him from extending it. Fabiano uses the distraction of the submission to take mount and land a slew of shots before the horn ends the round. Sherdog.com scores the slow-paced round 10-9 for Fabiano.

Round 2

Fabiano vs. Godfrey.
Fabiano looks to trade early in the second but runs right into a Godfrey kick. Fabiano locks him up and hip tosses him to the mat. From side control, Fabiano pins Godfrey into a crucifix position, trapping his right arm with his legs and his left with his right hand, before punching unabatedly to his face. Godfrey bucks his way out and takes top position shortly, but Fabiano sweeps back into the mount. Fabiano shoots short punches to the head of Godfrey as he battles to keep his head off the cage. Godfrey puts Fabiano back in guard and stalls him out until referee Herb Dean decides to restart them on their feet. Fabiano gets the bout back to the ground but with just seconds left, time runs out before he can’t advance position. Sherdog.com scores the round 10-9 for Fabiano.

Round 3
Fabiano gives up the take down to kick off the final round. Godfrey fights to keep him on his back but the Brazilian rolls to his knees and fights off a guillotine to take top position. Fabiano works for the mount but gets caught in half-guard. He gives up on the mount and takes side-control before going back to mount. Godfrey puts him back in half-guard but eats a few punches for his effort. Dean, sensing the pace is not picking up, restarts the fighters on their feet. Godfrey shoots once again but is reversed again as well. Sherdog.com scores the round 10-9 for Fabiano.

Fabiano takes the unanimous decision with scores of 30-27 across the board.

Charlie Valencia vs. Akitoshi Tamura
Round 1
Tamura intent on throwing kicks early on and though they aren’t landing they have kept Valencia at bay. Valencia lands a nice left knee as the fighters break from a brief clinch. Valencia shoots a right hand up the middle as Tamura tries to close the distance. Tamura attempts an inside leg kick but misses and clips Valencia right on the cup. He goes down in a heap and referee Josh Rosenthal steps in to allow him to recover. Valencia is ready to restart and he seems upset. He absorbs a low kick from Tamura and launches a kick of his own at his opponent’s head. The fighters engage in a brief exchange before Tamura goes to his back and sucks Valencia into his guard. Tamura locks up Valencia with a high guard and works on a choke attempt. Valencia perseveres and eventually snakes his way out of danger by slamming his way out of the hold. Valencia pounds away with strikes until the round closes. Sherdog.com scores the close round 10-9 for Valencia.

Round 2

Valencia vs. Tamura.
Tamura is still relying heavily on kicks as the second frame gets underway. Valencia has navigated clear of most of them while looking to counter. Valencia lands a solid kick to Tamura’s lead thigh. Tamura clinches up along the cage and takes his back while standing. Tamura locks in a body-triangle and punches as he searches for a choke. Tamura holds on for nearly four minutes as Valencia stays on his feet and defends the choke. With 30 seconds left, Valencia falls to his knees and then gets flattened but he holds on to the end of the round. Sherdog.com scores the round 10-9 for Tamura.


Round 3
After a slow 90 seconds, Valencia blasts Tamura with a combination that drops Tamura. Valencia takes a front headlock and rolls him to his back where he continues the assault. A game Tamura works back to his feet and is greeted with a hard right hand. Tamura is breathing hard out of his mouth but he keeps coming forward. Valencia pops Tamura’s head back with a jab. Tamura answers with a grazing kick to the left side of Valencia’s head. Valencia punches his way in and flurries on Tamura with just 15 seconds left. The two trade wild shots right up to the end of the bout. Sherdog.com scores the round 10-9 for Valencia.

The official scores read 29-28, 28-29 and 29-28 for Valencia, who takes the split decision.

Mackens Semerzier vs. Deividas Taurosevicius
Round 1
Jason Herzog is the referee for the main card opener. Fighters touch gloves. Semerzier misses a kick, and Taurosevicius punches his way in to clinch his foe against the cage. Both have over-unders. Semerzier turns Taurosevicius against the cage, and Taurosevicius turns him back and grabs a single-leg. As Semerzier goes for a guillotine, Taurosevicius lifts him and slams him. Taurosevicius stands over Semerzier and kicks to his legs. Semerzier kicks from his back. Taurosevicius times his opponent’s upkicks and steps in, passing guard. 2:40 to go. Semerzier gets full guard, and Taurosevicius stands with him still holding guard, which allows Semerzier to drop to his feet. They separate. Straight left from Taurosevicius. He throws a right hook and shoots again. Semerzier defends a takedown and tries another guilltone, which leads to another big slam from Taurosevicius. 1:15 to go. Fight is in Semerzier’s closed guard. He hooks under his leg in the lockdown position. The fight slows, and the ref stands them. Taurosevicius shoots again, and Semerzier defends this time.

Round 2
Semerzier double pumps the jab but doesn’t land. He kicks to Taurosevicius’ thigh. Taurosevicius misses a sidekick out of his southpaw stance. Semerzier kicks again to the inside of his thigh. Taurosevicius goes low with a kick, and Semerzier kicks hard to the head, but it’s blocked. Semerzier tries an outside trip, and instead Taurosevicius powers him to the mat. Semerzier stands, and Taurosevicius nearly lands a rolling single-leg takedown. He lifts Semerzier again for a slam, but Semerzier goes for a triangle. Textbook defense from Taurosevicius, who postures up and maintains top position. 2:30 to go. Short strikes from Taurosevicius in Semerzier’s guard. Semerzier opens his legs but can’t get a sub game going. Semerzier tries to get perpendicular to Taurosevicius, who doesn’t seem threatened. He stands and punches down at Semerzier. 30 seconds to go and Semerzier tries for a kneebar. Taurosevicius easily defends and lands a good right hand.

Round 3
The fighters trade kicks to begin the third. Semerzier measures with his left and launches an overhand right that misses. Taurosevicius catches his leg and pushes him against the cage. He grabs a front headlock, but Semerzier frees himself and grabs his own. They break. 3:35 to go. Taurosevicius jabs and follows with a kick to the body, then shoots. Semerzier tries for a D’Arce choke but isn’t close. Semerzier does roll Taurosevicius with a kimura, but Taurosevicius attacks his leg. Semerzier easily defends and stands over Taurosevicius. 2:20 to go. Semerzier controls Taurosevicius’s left ankle while standing over him. He punches to his body and then lands to the head. Semerzier continues to pick his shots while standing over his opponent. Taurosevicius is content to stay on his back, and Semerzier is scoring points. With a minute to go, Semerzier engages on the ground and passes to side control. Taurosevicius tries to roll out, and Semerzier wraps up a tight guillotine. Taurosevicius strains and pops his head out with 20 seconds to go, and the round closes in Semerzier’s guard.

Brown vs. Morrison.
Mike Thomas Brown vs. Anthony Morrison
Round 1
Jason Herzog is your ref once again. Morrison kicks high into Brown’s arms. Brown is waiting back while Morrison kicks. Brown wings a wild right and wraps up his opponent. He powers Morrison to the mat with a body lock and almost instantly traps one of his arms and peppers his face with punches. Morrison gets his arm free, but Brown maintains control, nearly gets mount and then takes Morrison’s back for a rear-naked choke. Morrison taps. Official time is 1:54.




Dave Jansen vs. Kamal Shalorus
Round 1
Herb Dean is the referee. Jansen circles a mostly stationary Shalorus to begin. Shalorus steps in with a body kick. Jansen jabs and follows with several rights, one of which lands but doesn’t hurt Shalorus. Shalorus wings a wild right and then an uppercut in the clinch. He connects with a straight right, but Jansen fires back and shoots. Shalorus stops the shot and the fighters break. 3:00 to go. Shalorus kicks to Jansen’s thigh. Shalorus looks stiff on his feet but throws hard. Jansen misses another single after Shalorus uses a front headlock to easily defend. Jansen comes in punching, and Shalorus takes him down. Jansen gets up quickly, however, and connects with another right. Shalorus stands in the pocket and throws back, cutting Jansen over his left eye. Jansen walks into a right hand and a left hook, and he’s stunned but on his feet to close the round.

Round 2

Shalorus vs. Jansen.
Another exchange begins the second. Jansen is throwing the straighter punches, but Shalorus swings harder, usually a wild overhand right followed with a left hook. The form is bad, but Jansen is developing a habit of walking into the punches. Jansen kicks to the thigh and ducks out of a punch combination. Jansen misses a one-two, and Shalorus is under him for a double-leg. The fight goes to Jansen’s open guard at 2:30. Jansen does a good job of rolling to his feet very quickly. Both fighters swing wildly. Jansen steps in with a good knee to the head. Shalorus is fine, though. Another wild exchange, and Jansen seems to have hurt Shalorus briefly with a wide right hand. He pursues Shalorus, who recovers quickly and sticks a straight right in Jansen’s face, which is getting fairly bloody. Jansen misses another takedown to finish the round.

Round 3
After missing an overhand right, Shalorus connects with a left hook to the body. Jansen shoots well, but Shalorus has excellent takedown defense. Jansen shoots again but doesn’t touch Shalorus’ legs. Jansen tries to uppercut a ducking Shalorus but misses. 3:20 to go. The fighters are canceling out each other’s jabs. Shalorus is now throwing a looping hook. It leaves him open to a short right from Jansen. Jansen misses another takedown. 2:00 to go. Shalorus gets Jansen’s leg for an easy single-leg takedown, but he shows no control on the ground and Jansen stands. Jansen’s forehead is open again. He throws a hard lead knee to Shalorus’ head. It lands but doesn’t seem to do much damage before Shalorus gets another takedown. He has no trouble putting Jansen down when he wants to. Jansen works to his feet but is caught in a front headlock. The round ends against the fence.

Urijah Faber vs. Raphael Assuncao
Round 1
Assuncao initiates the clinch in the opening 20 seconds. He has double underhooks, but Faber reverses him against the cage. Assuncao then turns Faber back into the cage. Assuncao misses a left hook, and Faber circles out. Faber throws a front kick and then literally runs in with an overhand right that misses. Again Assuncao pushes him against the cage. They break with three minutes to go. Faber connects with a straight right hand and pushes Assuncao to the fence. They break again. Faber lands with a lead left uppercut. He is much quicker than Assuncao with his hands. Assuncao gets a bodylock and has Faber off balance briefly but can’t put him down. Again to the fence. Faber breaks and they have a brief firefight before breaking again. Short uppercut from Faber. Faber jumps in with a knee but doesn’t land. Faber counters with an overhand right that partially connects.

Round 2
Faber grabs a single, but Assuncao is quick to attack a leg. Faber ends up in Assuncao’s guard. Assuncao tries to stand, and Faber grabs a guillotine choke. It looks deep. He rolls with Assuncao, who escapes and knees Faber. Back to the feet, and Assuncao flurries with his hands. Assuncao kicks to Faber’s front leg. Faber is trying to get in and out while Assuncao tries to counter when Faber engages. Assuncao steps in to an overhand right and is dropped. He seems to recover quickly and looks for an armbar on the ground. Faber begins working in Assuncao’s guard. 1:47 to go. Faber works from the top until Assuncao tries to stand. The round ends with Assuncao standing and breaking.

Faber vs. Assuncao.
Round 3
Assuncao counters a kick with a straight right. Faber shoots for a single and finishes it. Assuncao kicks him away, though, and stands. Assuncao shoots a single, and Faber defends with a kimura grip. They lock up against the cage and trade knees. Assuncao controls Faber’s head and pushes him against the fence. They break. 2:45 to go. Assuncao trips Faber briefly with a kick to the legs. Faber stands and lands a straight right that drops Assuncao, who again recovers quickly. The fight is in Assuncao’s guard. 2:10 left. Faber throws an elbow from the top. Assuncao gets enough space to stand, but Faber takes his back and slips on a rear-naked choke for the tap. Official time is 3:49.

Jamie Varner vs. Benson Henderson
Round 1
Varner clinches off a missed left hook and slams Henderson in the opening minute. Henderson immediately tries to roll to a kneebar. He keeps trying to get under the leg and straighten it. Varner moves to a front headlock and knees to the body. Varner then switches to a deep guillotine and cranks it. Henderson defends the choke but gets kneed in the face. Varner still has his opponent’s head locked up and is working his body with knees and punches while making Henderson carry his weight. Referee Herb Dean breaks them. 1:40 to go. Henderson kicks to Varner’s body, and Varner walks away oddly, as if he is expecting the fight to be paused. Henderson attacks, and Varner grapples him into the cage. They tie up for the remainder of the round.

Round 2
Henderson flicks a kick to Varner’s thigh. They lock up against the cage, and Henderson throws a knee on the break. Varner kicks to the inside of Henderson’s thigh and smiles at him. Henderson trips when he’s kicked but stands quickly. Varner backs him up with a straight right. 3:00 to go. Varner blocks a kick to his body and misses high with his own kick. Nick kick to the body from Henderson. He comes in with a side kick follow-up, and Varner catches it and throws him hard to the mat. Henderson slaps a kick into Varner’s leg. Varner defends a single-leg and moves in while punching to the body. 1:00 to go. They’re locked against the fence. Varner nearly throws Henderson but can’t control him.

Round 3
Varner punches his way into the clinch. He has double underhooks against the cage. They break one minute into the round. Henderson kicks again to the body, then tries to go high and misses. Both fighters seem more inclined to back out of exchanges rather than counter. Varner goes high with a kick that’s blocked. Varner shoots a double-leg, and Henderson sinks an arm-in guillotine choke for the tap. Official times is 2:41.
