Vitor Belfort Passes Random Drug Test from Nevada Athletic Commission

Vitor Belfort passed a random drug test submitted to the Nevada Athletic Commission on Nov. 1.

NAC Executive Director Bob Bennett confirmed to Sherdog.com that no prohibited substances were found in the blood and urine samples submitted by Belfort. ESPN.com first reported the news. “The Phenom” is expected to face Chris Weidman for the middleweight title at UFC 184 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles on Feb. 28.

Belfort was granted a conditional license by the NAC on July 23, which initially would have allowed him to fight Weidman at UFC 181 on Dec. 6. The Brazilian’s licensing hinged on three conditions: That his first fight take place in Las Vegas, that it occurred no earlier than December and that he pay for enhanced random drug testing proposed by the NAC out of his own pocket. In addition, Belfort was required to submit both blood and urine samples, and any member of the commission had the power to order a random test on the fighter.

While it once appeared that the California State Athletic Commission would take over testing duties with the relocation of the Belfort-Weidman bout, Bennett said that he and CSAC Executive Officer Andy Foster are coordinating their efforts in the drug-screening process.

The Nov. 1 test was Belfort’s first since the NAC hearing, but it is unclear how often he will be tested leading up to UFC 184.

“It’s not conducive for us to reveal what our procedures are,” Bennett said. “But I can assure you we have an aggressive plan for all unarmed combatants.”
