Vancouver Commission: All UFC 131 Drug Screens Come Back Clean

All five drug screens conducted by the Vancouver Athletic Commission following UFC 131 came back clean, the commission announced Tuesday.

The fighters tested following the June 11event were Krzysztof Soszynski, Nick Ring, Dave Herman, Donald Cerrone and Junior dos Santos. According to the sanctioning body in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, all fighters tested submitted both ‘A’ and ‘B’ samples in adherence with the World Anti-Doping Agency’s International Standard for Testing with respect to in-commission testing.

The commission revealed that main event competitor Shane Carwin had also been tabbed for testing, but it was ultimately decided that Carwin’s sample would not undergo the screen.

“Despite Mr. Carwin’s willingness to complete the sample collection process, the VAC unilaterally exercised its discretion to rescind its selection of Mr. Carwin for anti-doping testing shortly following his bout at the event,” read a Monday statement from the VAC. “In making such a determination, in its absolute discretion, the VAC seeks to balance the guiding values of ‘fairness’ and ‘fighter safety.’”

Carwin was battered by dos Santos in the headlining attraction at Rogers Arena in Vancouver. The Brazilian nearly finished the fight in the first frame when he landed a hard punch combination, but Carwin proved extremely resilient, surviving the scare and soldiering on through the remaining two rounds. Dos Santos was declared the victor on all three judges’ scorecards, affirming his status as No. 1 contender for Cain Velasquez’s heavyweight title.
