UFC’s Mike Goldberg Removed from NFL on Fox Position After Vulgar Tweets

Mike Goldberg has been relieved from his position calling National Football League games for Fox following his debut last Sunday.

The longtime Ultimate Fighting Championship play-by-play man had a less than stellar showing while announcing the Detroit Lions-Minnesota Vikings game, which was then followed by Goldberg addressing his critics on Twitter.

In the end, Goldberg’s Twitter comments are what did him in, as today it was revealed that he will not return to the booth next Sunday. Goldberg’s tweets have subsequently been deleted.

“Obviously, Mike let his emotions get the best of him during his Twitter responses on Sunday,” a Fox Sports spokesperson told SI.com. “He was quick to apologize for this unfortunate and regrettable situation and understands he made a mistake. He offered to not broadcast this Sunday’s game to avoid any further distraction and we agreed.”

Goldberg was originally slated to call this Sunday’s Vikings game against the Buffalo Bills, but today it was announced that Tim Brando will instead fill in alongside Brendon Ayanbadejo.

Now that it’s clear Goldberg will not be returning, he apologized for his social media exploits as well as said he understands Fox’s decision to go their separate ways. Goldberg is expected be Octagon-side for UFC 179 in Brazil later this month.

“I just want to apologize to everyone at Fox and elsewhere for my momentary lapse of reason Sunday night,” Goldberg wrote online. “I let some mean-spirited folks on Twitter get to me and I should have had thicker skin instead of reacting so quickly and emotionally. I don’t want to be a distraction on the upcoming broadcast Sunday, so we mutually agreed that it would be best to sit this next one out. I’m not happy about it personally but, professionally, it’s the right thing to do after my mistake.”
