UFC on Fuel TV 8 Bonuses: Wanderlei Silva Nets $100K; Mark Hunt, Brian Stann Earn $50K

Wanderlei Silva’s return to Japan proved a fruitful one, as “The Axe Murderer” walked away from UFC on Fuel TV 8 with an extra $100,000.

Silva earned both “Knockout of the Night” and “Fight of the Night” honors, sharing the latter with Brian Stann, who picked up an additional $50,000 in defeat. Heavyweight power-puncher Mark Hunt was handed the same sum for his third-round knockout of Stefan Struve, while no one claimed “Submission of the Night.”

UFC on Fuel TV 8 took place at Saitama Super Arena in Saitama, Japan, and was headlined by Silva’s back-and-forth light heavyweight affair with Stann. Both men hit the canvas in the first frame, with Stann attacking with straight punches and low kicks while the Brazilian found a home for his trademark wild hooks. Though Stann appeared in control to start the second frame, Silva hit the mark with a crisp straight that put the American flat on his back, where the former Pride champion quickly finished him with four more concussive right hooks to the skull.

In the evening’s co-main event, Hunt notched his fourth straight victory by felling “Skyscraper” Struve with a massive left hook in the third round. Though the 38-year-old heavyweight found success on his feet throughout the contest, he nevertheless made a point of engaging Struve on the mat in spite of the Dutchman’s 16 career submission wins. Still, the New Zealander found his range late, breaking Struve’s jaw with the finishing blow and forcing referee Herb Dean to halt the contest.
