By: Brian Knapp Dec 19, 2016
Faber’s farewell fight was memorable in more ways than one.
Team Alpha Male patriarch pocketed an event-high $320,000 for
his unanimous decision victory over Brad
Pickett ($40,000) at UFC on Fox 22 “VanZant vs. Waterson” on
Saturday at the Golden 1 Center in Sacramento, California. Faber
made nearly five times as much as the show’s headliners did
Waterson brought home $30,000 after choking Paige
VanZant ($43,000) unconscious in the main event.
“The California Kid” announced his plans to retire prior to the
bout and largely dominated Pickett across three rounds. Faber
flirted with a finish in Round 1, where he floored the Brit with a
ringing left hook, and spent the final 10 minutes corralling him
with takedowns, ground-and-pound and the occasional submission
attempt. Judges awarded the former World Extreme Cagefighting
champion 30-26 marks on all three scorecards.
Meanwhile, unbeaten prospect Mickey Gall
banked $40,000 in the co-headliner, as he submitted Sage
Northcutt with a second-round rear-naked choke. Northcutt
($60,000) bowed out 1:40 into Round 2, as the 20-year-old lost for
the second time in three outings.
