Ian Entwistle vs. Anthony Birchak

Round 1

Birchak hits a quick takedown and begins dropping punches through Entwistle’s guard, but the American soon has to go on the defensive as Entwistle drops back to attempt a heel hook. Birchak nearly escapes, but Entwistle adjusts his grip and goes back to cranking the leglock. The bantamweights roll toward the fence, Entwistle wrenching the leg all along, and Birchak is finally forced to submit.

Henry Cejudo vs. Dustin Kimura

Round 1

Cejudo presses forward in the opening minute and puts a couple left hooks on the cheek of Kimura, then mixes in a few kicks to the Hawaiian’s lead leg and body. Kimura looks to tie up, gets shoved away and takes another low kick. Cejudo mugs his opponent against the fence midway through the round, but Kimura quickly circles out. A nice right cross from Cejudo sends Kimura to the canvas, and now the Olympian follows to the ground, dropping punches through Kimura’s open guard. Cejudo stands after a few seconds and invites Kimura to do the same. A three-punch combination backs Kimura up to the fence, and “The Diamond” answers with a Thai clinch, firing a few knees up the center on the shorter Cejudo. The 135ers fight back to the center, where Cejudo counters a Kimura right hand with a snappy pair of punches. Cejudo finishes the round by laying a kick across Kimura’s midsection.

Round 2

Cejudo catches a kick and makes Kimura pay with two or three right hands before releasing the leg. Kimura comes away from the next exchange pawing at his right eye, but he quickly regains his composure and backs up Cejudo with a front kick up the middle. Cejudo waits a few seconds before bouncing back into the pocket and landing another right hand. Cejudo tries to grab hold of Kimura, who backs out and circles away. Referee Jason Herzog warns the fighters to mind their heads after a clash in a striking exchange. Cejudo traps his man near the fence and comes in throwing haymakers, but Kimura is able to escape without absorbing much damage. With 90 seconds left in the round, Cejudo scores with a left hook upstairs and a right hand to the body. Cejudo goes back to the body to counter a looping overhand right from Kimura, who’s now sporting a cut beneath his left eye. Another left hook from Cejudo opens a cut on the outside of Kimura’s right eye toward the end of the round.

Round 3

Kimura lands an outside leg kick to open the round but pulls up short on a three-punch combination behind it. The Hawaiian flicks out his jab, still on his back foot, trying to keep the aggressive Cejudo out of the pocket. Cejudo finds his way inside to crack Kimura with another left hook, worsening the cut near Kimura’s right eye. Cejudo changes levels as Kimura presses forward, but the wrestler can’t get hold and Kimura backs out. Kimura counters a Cejudo right hand with a nice left hook, then sends a left to Cejudo’s body. Cejudo answers with a crisp body-head combination, steps through and hits Kimura with a knee to the gut from the Thai plum. With just over one minute remaining, Cejudo grabs a single-leg but quickly releases. Cejudo fakes another single-leg and comes back upstairs once inside to land a left hand. Kimura launches himself into the air with a desperation flying knee, then begins raising his arms to try and lure Cejudo into a brawl. Cejudo won’t bite and spends the last few seconds of the bout backing up while Kimura charges in with strikes until the horn.

David Michaud vs. Garett Whiteley

Round 1

Whiteley opens the fight throwing kicks at the legs of Michaud, who answers with short punches down the center as he walks forward on the taller man. Michaud navigates past more kicks from Whiteley to get into the pocket and bomb with uppercuts in the tie-up. Whiteley escapes and circles out, moving around the perimeter with his back to the fence. The lightweights come back to the center with two minutes on the clock, and Michaud sends Whiteley back to the edges of the cage with a spinning kick. Whiteley gives Michaud another leg kick before Michaud double-pumps his jab in Whiteley’s face. They lock up with over-unders on the fence, then Michaud disengages to catch Whiteley with a right hand on the ear. Whiteley hits the deck and Michaud follows, trying to take Whiteley’s back but losing the position as Whiteley stands up. Michaud cracks Whiteley with another right-handed uppercut on the exit.

Round 2

Michaud gets a takedown near the fence and lands in side control on Whiteley’s left side. Referee Al Guinee warns Whiteley not to put his toes in the fence as Whiteley tries to push off with his feet. Whiteley lands a couple elbows from underneath which open a gushing cut on Michaud’s right eyebrow. Blood is spraying all over the canvas as Michaud briefly passes to full mount and gets pushed right back out. Whiteley puts Michaud in full guard and goes back to elbowing as the pace slows and Michaud tries to control his opponent. Michaud maintains top position through the end of the round.

Round 3

Whiteley walks into a couple stiff jabs from Michaud, then backs up and catches the incoming “Bulldawg” with a right hand to the body. Michaud is slowing but still connecting with the harder shots. Whiteley answers a right hand with a pair of leg kicks, then Michaud presses forward and hits a takedown away from the fence. Michaud drops a good right hand through the guard and breaks Whiteley’s posture as the longer man threatens to creep his legs up for a submission attempt. Referee Guinee orders the fighters to stand with one minute remaining, and Michaud is slow to get up. As soon as the fight is restarted, Michaud blasts into another double-leg takedown and floors Whiteley again. Whiteley scores with elbows from underneath and then angles for an armbar, but Michaud finishes the round and the fight on top.

Joe Ellenberger vs. Bryan Barberena

Round 1

Ellenberger circles clockwise around the outside while the southpaw Barberena follows him and threatens with feints. After 80 seconds, Ellenberger explodes into a double-leg and floors Barberena near the fence. Barberena works his way back up and gets Ellenberger to back away with a just-missed uppercut. With Ellenberger’s back to the fence, Barberena steps in to try and connect with a combination and gets rocked by an Ellenberger counter right hand. Ellenberger tries to jump on Barberena’s back, can’t secure the position, and they go back to circling the cage with 90 seconds left in the round. Barberena presses forward and gets his head rocked again, this time by a right straight. Ellenberger eats an uppercut but gets out of trouble by faking a shot and making Barberena sprawl. Barberena comes forward swinging hands at the end of the round but can’t find Ellenberger.

Round 2

Barberena goes straight after Ellenberger, who counters his aggressive opponent with an uppercut and overhand left, then dips out to the right and continues circling the cage. Barberena gets busy with some kicks to the inside of Ellenberger’s lead leg. Ellenberger’s punches are coming a little slower now, and Barberena is starting to find his mark when he steps into range. Barberena leaps into the pocket with a half-hearted flying knee and eats an overhand right for his trouble. A two-punch combo connects for Barberena, who backs out and returns with another leg kick. Ellenberger leans Barberena on the fence for a moment but can’t drag him down. Barberena finishes the round strong, hitting Ellenberger with a hard body kick, then a pair of sweeping rights and a final left hand.

Round 3

Ellenberger trips Barberena to the ground about 20 seconds into the final frame, but Barberena quickly posts and stands up. The lightweights go back to their familiar motion, Ellenberger circling on the outside and Barberena following from the center. This time, Ellenberger’s hands are by his sides, allowing Barberena to step in and land hard left hands which send the Nebraskan to the ground. Barberena follows and throws hammer fists through Ellenberger’s open guard, then keeps the punishment coming as Ellenberger rolls to his knees. Punches, knees to the body, now elbows land for Barberena as Ellenberger covers up. Referee Herb Dean is looking on from nearby, telling Ellenberger to fight back. Barberena keeps bashing away with elbows and left hands, and after a couple dozen shots go unanswered, referee Dean stops the fight.

Ed Herman vs. Derek Brunson

This fight has been canceled. UFC officials announced that Brunson was forced to withdraw “due to stomach issues.”

Jamie Varner vs. Drew Dober

Round 1

Varner sends a right hand down the center, catches a kick and defends as Dober changes levels. The lightweights tie up in the center of the cage, where Varner tries to toss Dober to the ground, botches the takedown and winds up on his back with Dober in full mount. Varner rolls to his side, allowing Dober to take his back and secure the position with both hooks in. Seconds later, Dober slaps on a rear-naked choke and squeezes tight, and Varner quickly taps out. The replay shows that Varner momentarily knocked himself out by driving his own head into the mat while attempting to take down Dober.

Ben Saunders vs. Joe Riggs

Round 1

Saunders throws a pair of high kicks early, the second of which catches on Riggs’ shoulder and allows “Diesel” to get hold of his rangy opponent. Riggs lifts and slams Saunders to the ground, where Saunders instantly pulls rubber guard. Before Saunders can apply a submission, Riggs slaps the mat in submission, having apparently injured his neck in the process of securing the takedown.

John Moraga vs. Willie Gates

Round 1

Gates keeps Moraga on the outside in the opening minute, flicking out long oblique kicks and jabs. Moraga chops at Gates’ lead leg with a couple hard low kicks and takes a pair of jabs in return. Moraga cuts off a Gates left hook with another nice low kick. Midway through the round, Moraga connects with a left hook. Moraga takes a low kick to the cup, but referee Jason Herzog says he didn’t see it and the flyweights must fight on. Gates surprises Moraga with a straight right that knocks “Chicano John” to the canvas. Gates takes his back in a flash and nearly secures a rear-naked choke, but he can’t get under the neck, so Moraga turns over and takes top position to escape the dangerous situation. The fighters work back to their feet in the final 30 seconds, where Moraga lands a couple low kicks to finish the round.

Round 2

Moraga lands a few more low kicks at the onset of round two, then closes the gap and shoves Gates against the fence with an underhook. After working for a takedown for the better part of one minute, Moraga releases Gates, then lands another low kick-right hand combination. Moraga comes in right behind the combo and puts Gates back on the fence, sending some knees to Gates’ legs and an elbow upstairs in between clinching and working for a takedown. Gates hits Moraga with a knee to the gut before the action slows, and referee Herzog tells the fighters to “keep working.” With 70 seconds left, Herzog breaks them up. Gates knocks Moraga backward with a side kick to the gut and then moves in to clinch, but Moraga reverses the position and reclaims the outside spot for the final half minute of the round.

Round 3

Gates blocks another takedown attempt but winds up right back on the cage with Moraga holding him in place. He tries to throw some knees at Moraga’s midsection, which causes Moraga to lock him up tighter in the clinch. Gates tries to turn the tables by controlling Moraga’s wrists, so Moraga rips an arm free and loops it around Gates’ neck as the flyweights slide to the ground. Moraga continues to threaten with a guillotine until Gates goes back-down to the canvas. Moraga releases the neck and takes full mount, bashing Gates with elbows and punches, his hardest strikes of the fights. Gates rolls to his knees with Moraga still glued to his back, and Moraga keeps the heavy elbows coming while referee Herzog warns him to target the ear and not the back of Gates’ head. Moraga slides his right arm underneath Gates’ chin and drops back to squeeze on a rear-naked choke. After being turned toward the fence, with nowhere to escape, Gates taps out.

Claudia Gadelha vs. Joanna Jedrzejczyk

Round 1

Gadelha presses the action early but walks into the outstretched hand of Jedrzejczyk, catching a finger in the eye. Jedrzejczyk apologizes and the fight resumes without a pause. Shortly thereafter, Gadelha closes the distance and wraps up Jedrzejczyk against the fence before working for an inside trip takedown. Jedrzejczyk defends at first, but Gadelha drags her down on the second effort and begins framing up an arm-triangle choke from deep half guard. Jedrzejczyk sits up against the fence and breaks the potential submission, then climbs back to her feet. Gadelha keeps her pressed against the cage and throws knees to the body before dropping levels to try for another takedown. Jedrzejczyk fends her off with a wide base and reverses the position to take the outside and pop the Brazilian with a couple hard elbows upstairs. Jedrzejczyk releases with 25 seconds left and keeps Gadelha out of shooting range with front kicks. In the final 10 seconds, Jedrzejczyk blasts Gadelha with an uppercut and tries to pound her out with hammer fists, but Gadelha is saved by the bell.

Round 2

Gadelha puts Jedrzejczyk right back on the fence and starts working for a takedown, but Jedrzejczyk counters by drilling the Brazilian’s body with a couple hard knees. Jedrzejczyk turns the position around and misses with a combination as they disengage, and now the strawweights go back to meet in the center. Jedrzejczyk gets into range with a jab and follows up with a clipping uppercut before cutting away. An overhand clubs Gadelha, who takes another inadvertant poke to the eye. This one is recognized by referee Al Guinee, but again the women want to fight on. Jedrzejczyk scores with a nice right hook to the body before being rushed against the cage by Gadelha yet again. This time, Gadelha whips Jedrzejczyk to the ground with just over one minute remaining. Jedrzejczyk is back on her knees a few seconds later, then stands to deliver a couple knees to Gadelha’s body. Gadelha scores one last takedown as the round expires.

Round 3

A clash of heads in the opening moments of round three leaves Gadelha with a nasty cut on the outside corner of her left eye. Referee Guinee calls the doctor in to check on the cut, and Gadelha is cleared to continue. Jedrzejczyk lands an uppercut on the restart, but Gadelha walks through the Pole’s strikes to clinch up and trip her to the ground. Jedrzejczyk squirms to the outside and tries to push off the fence with her feet to escape, her face now half-covered with Gadelha’s blood. Jedrzejczyk sits up against the cage, posts and stands with three minute to go, only to be immediately tossed back down and socked by three or four Gadelha right hands. Twenty seconds later, Jedrzejczyk is back on her feet; 10 seconds after that, Gadelha dumps Jedrzejczyk on her head again. The sequence repeats, Gadelha landing more right hands when Jedrzejczyk stands. Jedrzejczyk is able to stay vertical this time, sprawling wide against the cage as Gadelha digs for a double-leg takedown. Gadelha switches to a single, then a body lock, then tries to pick Jedrzejczyk’s ankle, but she can’t get the takedown. With 45 seconds on the clock, Jedrzejczyk reverses the position and drills Gadelha with a couple level elbows. They separate and Jedrzejczyk marches forward to zap Gadelha with an uppercut, an overhand right, a right hook. The horn sounds in the middle of an exchange, and even though referee Guinee steps in between the fighters, Gadelha swings and connects with a late right hook.

Round 1

Gonzaga reaches out to touch gloves, but Mitrione wants no part of it and begins winding up his left hand while jawing at the Brazilian. Gonzaga steps into the pocket and grazes Mitrione with a wide left hand before stepping back out. Gonzaga sends a combination down the center, resets and stumbles Mitrione with a jab. Mitrione regains his footing and pops Gonzaga with a jab of his own. Gonzaga goes shooting for Mitrione’s legs and gets dropped with a left hook on the ear. Mitrione lands five or six hard left hands on his kneeling opponent, stands up and checks with referee Herb Dean, who apparently isn’t satisfied. Mitrione dives back to the ground and gives Gonzaga one more on the chin, and now referee Dean has seen enough.

Alistair Overeem vs. Stefan Struve

Round 1

Overeem switches stances as he moves around the perimeter of the cage, then steps out, digs an underhoook and turns Struve against the fence. The clinch doesn’t last long, and now Struve pushes Overeem backward with a front kick to the midsection. Overeem hits a takedown about 90 seconds into the fight and sits up to work from Struve’s open guard. Overeem lands a pair of right hands, but Struve is doing well to tie up the wrists of the “Demolition Man.” Pulling his right arm loose, Overeem stands up and looks for an opening. He can’t find one, so Overeem comes back down to Struve’s guard. Struve kicks him away and Overeem stands again, this time to kick at the prone Struve’s legs as the Phoenix crowd starts to boo. Back down comes Overeem, dodging an upkick from Struve along the way, and now referee John McCarthy calls for the fighters to work. Overeem ties up the right arm of Struve and leans over to land a big left straight and heavy right hands near the fence. Struve is clearly hurt by the punches, can’t get his arm free, and after four or five more hard shots from Overeem connect to Struve’s face, referee McCarthy steps in to stop the contest.

Rafael dos Anjos vs. Nate Diaz

Round 1

Dos Anjos open the scoring with a few leg kicks, takes a push kick to the midsection and gives Diaz a hard shot to the ribs. The outside low kicks keep coming from dos Anjos, landing high on the thigh of Diaz’s lead leg. The southpaws continue to find their range, dos Anjos getting through with a left hook and Diaz coming over the top with a hard left hand of his own. Diaz switches to orthodox stance after another chopping kick from dos Anjos but soon switches back; dos Anjos answers by adding another pair of kicks to the leg. Diaz is stepping gingerly on the right leg now, and he willingly rolls to the ground, allowing dos Anjos to set up in his half guard. Diaz takes a couple hammer fists to the head before getting hold of a heel hook and dropping back. Dos Anjos waits patiently and extracts his leg, then comes back down to side control, then north-south, perhaps looking to set up a kimura. Diaz puts him back in half guard, where dos Anjos finishes the round dropping elbows.

Round 2

Dos Anjos goes straight back to chopping at Diaz’s right leg, moving the Californian around the outside. Diaz grabs for the Brazilian’s legs and comes up empty, then puts his back against the fence, giving dos Anjos a stationary target for his leg kicks. Dos Anjos hits a takedown and lands in the half guard of Diaz, who quickly moves dos Anjos back to full guard. Dos Anjos stands up and slices Diaz with a pair of sharp elbows, and now Diaz tries to get to his feet. Dos Anjos keeps him pressed against the cage, feeding Diaz a steady diet of right hands and knees to the body until he releases. With 90 seconds remaining in the round, referee Jason Herzog wants the doctor to check on Diaz’s damaged right eye. Diaz is soon cleared to continue, and he resumes the fight pawing with jabs, trying to keep the shorter man out of range. Dos Anjos gives Diaz a stiff kick to the body and continues to move him around the outside. A leaping switch kick to the body knocks Diaz to the ground in the final 10 seconds, and dos Anjos finishes the round in side control.

Round 3

Diaz gets grazed with a left high kick which doesn’t seem to affect him, but when he marches toward his opponent, dos Anjos changes levels and takes him down in the center of the cage. Dos Anjos lands some more solid ground-and-pound, navigating the rangy guard of Diaz to score with hammer fists and elbows. Now, dos Anjos stands up to kick at Diaz’s damaged leg, which has turned several shades of purple and red. Back down to Diaz’s guard comes dos Anjos, inflicting more damage with elbows and left hands. Diaz is jawing from underneath, landing a few punches of his own, but mostly being controlled and banged up by the Brazilian. Diaz switches to open-handed slaps in the final seconds, prompting one last explosion of heavy ground-and-pound from dos Anjos.

Round 1

Referee Herb Dean is the third man in the cage for tonight’s heavyweight main event, with judges Derek Cleary, Marcos Rosales and Glenn Trowbridge scoring at cageside. The big men touch gloves and dos Santos takes the center of the Octagon, then clips Miocic with his first punch, a single overhand right. Miocic shoots low and puts dos Santos on the fence with a double-leg before coming back up to stand in the clinch. Dos Santos breaks free, resets and lobs a huge overhand right which Miocic ducks under. Dos Santos stuffs the shot, so Miocic comes back up and pops the former champ with a pair of punches. The fighters separate and now it’s Miocic coming forward, snapping back dos Santos’ head with a stiff jab. Dos Santos connects with a left hook, eats one in return, and Miocic follows up with a hard, straight right. The last punch makes dos Santos circle away, but Miocic chases him down to clinch, then hits the Brazilian with another big right hand on the break. Dos Santos’ face is reddened as he momentarily goes on the retreat. Miocic walks into a couple big overhand rights, dodges an uppercut and then clips dos Santos with a whipping right hook. This one seems to have cut dos Santos beneath the right eye. Dos Santos finishes strong with a couple left hands to close out a narrow opening round.

Round 2

Miocic lands a body kick and a right hand up top before changing levels and shooting for a takedown against the fence. Dos Santos shuts it down and stands dos Santos back up to clinch for a few seconds, and now they break. Dos Santos is throwing single shots, sticking a couple jabs and coming up short as he tries to attack Miocic’s body. Miocic rushes into the pocket and lands an overhand right that opens another small cut, this one on the Brazilian’s forehead. Miocic catches dos Santos leaning in and pops him with a hard jab, then makes “Cigano” swing at air with a sloppy overhand left. There’s blood leaking into dos Santos’ right eye as Miocic shoves him against the fence. Dos Santos turns him around and releases, then catches Miocic on the exit with a nice left hook. Dos Santos goes to the body with a pair of punches, backs up Miocic with a jab as the round enters its final minute. Miocic blasts back with an overhand right as he moves in to clinch again. Miocic gets an underhook, throws a shoulder shrug at dos Santos’ face and drops for a double-leg. With 25 seconds left, Miocic gets his first takedown, but dos Santos is back on his feet just before the horn.

Round 3

Miocic goes back to landing right hands near the fence, then shoots for a single-leg when dos Santos wanders to the center of the cage. Dos Santos sits down on the takedown attempt and tries to take top position, but Miocic pops back to his feet and tags dos Santos with another hard right. Dos Santos answers with a few good jabs, but the Brazilian’s face is looking rough now, not only bleeding but showing swelling on his right cheekbone. Dos Santos whiffs on a huge uppercut which draws an “ooh” from the crowd. He gives Miocic a straight shot to the gut, and Miocic answers with an overhand right. Dos Santos catches Miocic walking in with his hands down and drops him with a huge left hook. Miocic survives the follow-up punches on his knees, stands up and goes straight back to walking forward on the former champion. Dos Santos snuffs out a single-leg attempt from Miocic, whose nose was busted open in the knockdown. Inside the last minute of the round, dos Santos is doing damage to the body of Miocic, now goes upstairs with an overhand right.

Round 4

Twenty seconds into the round, Miocic catches dos Santos on the cup with an inside low kick. The Brazilian recovers after a few seconds, then gets single-legged to the ground shortly after action resumes. Dos Santos climbs back to his feet, and the big men exchange jabs. Miocic’s hands are hanging low, allowing dos Santos to come over the top with a double jab and a right straight. Despite eating the shots, Miocic just keeps coming, trying to hold dos Santos against the cage. Dos Santos breaks loose and misses with another huge uppercut. Midway through round four now, Miocic comes alive and cracks dos Santos with an overhand right. Dos Santos looks to do a bit of rope-a-dope against the fence, then circles back to the middle and starts firing jabs and body shots. With 55 seconds left in the round, dos Santos scores a takedown, but Miocic is able to hit the switch and escape 20 seconds later. Dos Santos walks his man down, backing Miocic toward the fence with a body-head combo.

Round 5

Both heavyweights score with jabs in the opening minute, though dos Santos mixes in four or five good body shots. Dos Santos connects with a left hook to the body and left hook to the face in quick succession. He circles out to the middle and blasts Miocic with another hard hook to the gut. Miocic lands a jab, takes a right hand in the gut and a straight right to the grill. The big men land simultaneous right hooks, but neither goes down. Dos Santos goes body-head with a double jab; Miocic answers back with an overhand right, then another and another before dos Santos grabs hold of him and pushes him on the fence. Miocic escapes briefly, but dos Santos grabs him again. They separate with 60 seconds on the clock and Miocic walks forward, only to be grabbed around the collar and popped with a couple quick uppercuts. Dos Santos sticks a few more jabs as Miocic walks forward winging tired punches. Miocic leans dos Santos against the fence, dos Santos reverses to score with a knee to the body, and that’s where the fight ends.
