UFC on FX 7 Update: Justin Salas Sidelined, Edson Barboza to Face Newcomer Lucas Martins

Lightweight Justin Salas has suffered an undisclosed training injury and will no longer face Edson Barboza at UFC on FX 7.

UFC officials announced Wednesday that Salas has been removed from the card, and that Barboza will instead face unbeaten newcomer Lucas Martins when the Octagon touches down in Sao Paulo, Brazil, later this month.

UFC on FX 7 takes place Jan. 19 at Geraldo Jose de Almeida Gymnasium and will be headlined by a middleweight showdown between Brazilian veteran Vitor Belfort and England’s Michael Bisping. The event marks the promotion’s first visit to Sao Paulo since “Ultimate Brazil” in October 1998.

Barboza, 26, will look to rebound from the first loss of his career, a stunning TKO upset at the hands of former WEC champ Jamie Varner last May. The Rio de Janeiro-born striker had previously run up a 10-0 record, including his “Knockout of the Year”-winning performance against Terry Etim last January.

A native of the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais, 24-year-old “Mineiro” Martins has accumulated 12 wins in just 15 months as a professional. The Chute Boxe representative fought 10 times in 2012, finishing all but one of his opponents. His most recent bout came under the banner of top Brazilian promotion Jungle Fight, where Martins in December halted the 10-fight unbeaten streak of Oberdan Vieira Tenorio with a head-kick knockout.
