In a competitive evening for bonuses, it was Diego Nunes, Bart Palaszewski, Justin Edwards and Michael Johnson who left Minneapolis’ Target Center with an extra $40,000 apiece in hand.
Nunes and Palaszewski shared “Fight of the Night” honors at Friday’s UFC on FX 5 “Browne vs. Bigfoot,” which was topped by Antonio Silva’s first-round stoppage of previously unbeaten Travis Browne. Edwards won “Submission of the Night” by putting Josh Neer to sleep in their welterweight tilt, while Johnson won “Knockout of the Night” for his come-from-behind starching of Danny Castillo.
The featherweight bout between Nunes and Palaszewski was action-packed, if one-sided. Nunes looked crisp from the bell, dropping “Bartimus” with right hands multiple times in the opening round. The Brazilian’s dominance continued through the next two rounds, ultimately securing Nunes scorecards of 30-27, 30-27 and 29-28.
Edwards lived up to his nickname of “Fast Eddy” by relieving Neer of his consciousness in just 45 seconds. The Jorge Gurgel disciple charged at the horn, jumped guard and latched on a guillotine choke from which Neer was unable to escape.
Johnson suffered through a grueling opening round spent underneath Castillo, who dropped “The Menace” with punches before threatening with an arm-triangle choke. The former “Ultimate Fighter” finalist would not be denied, however, and stormed back in the second frame to crush Castillo with a short counter left and a series of follow-up punches which sealed the deal.
