Bentley Syler vs. Freddy Serrano

Round 1

Serrano takes an outside leg kick and drops Syler moments into the fight with a counter overhand right. Syler jumps back to his feet, apparently unfazed, and begins circling the perimeter, flicking out more low kicks. Serrano touches his “TUF: Latin America” castmate with another right hand, then a left hook before missing with a high axe kick. Syler grazes Serrano’s body with a side kick and then shuts down a half-hearted takedown attempt from the wrestler. Serrano misses with another double-leg, and now Syler tags him with a straight right that backs up the Colombian to the fence. They work back to the center, where Serrano connects on his man with a clubbing overhand right. Serrano finally hits a takedown with 20 seconds on the clock and gives Syler a few shoulder shrugs to the face before the horn.

Sherdog Scores

Jordan Breen scores the round 10-9 Serrano
Chris Nelson scores the round 10-9 Serrano
Jeff Sherwood scores the round 10-9 Serrano

Round 2

Serrano keeps the taller Syler out of the pocket early in round two with a flurry of high and spinning kicks. An uppercut lands for Serrano, then a grazing right hand around the guard. Syler continues to thwart Serrano’s takedown attempts, however, so the flyweights continue to strike at range despite a lack of clean offense. Midway through the round, Serrano meets Syler in the center of the cage to deliver an uppercut. A spinning kick misses for Serrano, then Syler scores with a low kick. Syler shoves Serrano away and zaps him with a straight right, but Syler is also wiping at his left eye, from which blood is trickling after a stiff jab from Serrano.

Sherdog Scores

Jordan Breen scores the round 10-9 Syler
Chris Nelson scores the round 10-9 Syler
Jeff Sherwood scores the round 10-9 Serrano

Round 3

Serrano knocked Syler dead.
Serrano opens the round with a takedown, but Syler is back on his feet seconds later and soon escapes Serrano’s clinch. Serrano cracks him with an uppercut, and now the bleeding on Syler’s left eye has worsened. Referee Osiris Maia pauses the action to have the eye examined, and Syler is cleared to continue. Serrano puts another right hand on the damaged eye and continues to fire off leg kicks to keep Syler away. Syler is going all-in now, blitzing Serrano with strikes. He ducks down and lowers his head to throw a jab, and Serrano blasts him with a massive uppercut. Syler is out cold before he hits the mat, but Serrano drives home a coffin nail for good measure before referee Maia can intervene.

The Official Result

Freddy Serrano def. Bentley Syler via KO (Punch) R3 1:34

Christos Giagos vs. Jorge Antonio Cezario de Oliveira

Round 1

(+ Enlarge) | Photo: G. Venga/Sherdog.com

Giagos smashed Oliveira and put him away.
Giagos tags Oliveira with an overhand right to open the bout and then swipes the Brazilian’s cheek with a left hand on the end of a combination. Giagos changes levels and floors Oliveira with a takedown just 35 seconds into the round. The striker Oliveira throws punches from his back and is twice warned by referee Eduardo Herdy for punching the back of Giagos’ head. Giagos takes full mount 90 seconds into the fight and swings wildly with punches, trying to pound out Oliveira, who attempts a heel hook to briefly force Giagos out of mount. Giagos yanks his leg free and steps straight back into full mount, where he takes a more measured approach this time, flattening out Oliveira with heavy pressure. Oliveira kicks and flails, trying to push off the fence, but he leaves his back exposed and Giagos moves to back-mount with both hooks in. Giagos applies a rear-naked choke and Oliveira taps out, then taps out again; the Brazilian taps five or six times in total before referee Eduardo Herdy finally stops the fight.

The Official Result

Christos Giagos def. Jorge de Oliveira via Submission (Rear-Naked Choke) R1 3:12

Cain Carrizosa vs. Leonardo Mafra Texeira

Round 1

Carrizosa sticks a jab down the center and has a left high kick blocked. A right hook knocks Mafra to the ground, and Carrizosa pounces to try and take the Brazilian’s back. Mafra stands up and shakes the Californian loose, but Carrizosa scores with a switch kick to the body and a front kick to the jaw. Mafra keeps pressing forward and rocks Carrizosa’s head with a four-punch combination. The lightweights are standing in the pocket, both men landing punches, and now Mafra begins to take over with stiff jabs and uppercuts. Carrizosa is on his back foot midway through the round, Mafra advancing on him to score with more left hooks and uppercuts, now mixing in leg kicks as well. Mafra lands another left hook before changing levels to wrap up Carrizosa’s legs and drag him to the canvas. Carrizosa gets back up with 80 seconds on the clock and puts a jab in Mafra’s face. Mafra keeps the pressure on, hitting Carrizosa with leg kicks, standing elbows and more punches in the pocket before the round expires.

Sherdog Scores

Jordan Breen scores the round 10-9 Mafra
Chris Nelson scores the round 10-9 Mafra
Jeff Sherwood scores the round 10-9 Mafra

Round 2

(+ Enlarge) | Photo: G. Venga/Sherdog.com

Texeira dominated Carrizosa for three rounds.
Mafra pulls down Carrizosa’s head to deliver knees to the body, then releases to tag “Cain the Insane” with a left hook. Carrizosa is fighting with his back to the fence, and now he grabs for Mafra’s legs and turns him toward the cage to attempt a takedown. Carrizosa switches from double- to single-leg, then has to abandon the shot when Mafra digs an underhook and shoves off. Mafra goes body-head with his punches, rattling Carrizosa’s head with another big left hook. Carrizosa won’t back down, but his offensive output has dropped off and his shots continue to fall flat. Mafra defends a double-leg and then tries one of his own, lifting Carrizosa into the air and planting him a few feet away from the fence. Mafra passes to north-south position and begins working on a kimura, but Carrizosa uses his feet to push off the Brazilian’s body and spins to reclaim guard. Mafra allows Carrizosa to stand, then puts him right back on the mat with another double-leg. Mafra spends the final half-minute of the round slowly working to advance past Carrizosa’s half guard.

Sherdog Scores

Jordan Breen scores the round 10-9 Mafra
Chris Nelson scores the round 10-9 Mafra
Jeff Sherwood scores the round 10-9 Mafra

Round 3

Carrizosa comes out firing, slinging punches with both hands and putting kicks on Mafra’s body. He doubles up with his jab and scores with a straight right down the middle, but there isn’t much behind the punches. Mafra gets another easy takedown, and this time Carrizosa attacks the Brazilian’s left leg, working for a heel hook. Mafra stands and extracts the limb, then comes back to the ground in full mount. Carrizosa kicks off the fence and rolls Mafra over the top, but the American is so tired that he just stays on his back rather than exploding to his feet. Mafra reclaims top position, defends an armbar attempt and then mounts Carrizosa again with 2:30 left in the fight. Carrizosa bucks Mafra out of mount and gets back to his feet, only to be taken right back down. Mafra leans right to left across Carrizosa’s body and drives a few elbows into his ribs before once again taking full mount. Carrizosa puts Mafra in half guard, but Mafra stands and drops a few punches, then goes back to side control for the final 20 seconds of the bout.

Sherdog Scores

Jordan Breen scores the round 10-8 Mafra (30-26 Mafra)
Chris Nelson scores the round 10-9 Mafra (30-27 Mafra)
Jeff Sherwood scores the round 10-9 Mafra (30-27 Mafra)

The Official Result

Leandro Silva vs. Drew Dober

Round 1

Dober throws an inside leg kick and gets clipped by a counter hook from his fellow southpaw. When the Nebraskan tries to scramble back to his feet, Silva rushes him and tries to get a takedown against the fence. Dober stuffs the shot and circles out, then catches Silva with a straight right hand near the fence. Silva switches stances and uses good head movement to dodge a flurry of punches. When Dober steps into the pocket with an overhand left, Silva changes levels and tries to hit a sneaky double-leg. Dober stands him up and presses Silva against the cage for a few seconds before releasing. The lightweights come back to the center of the cage with two minutes left in the opening round. Dober moves Silva back to the perimeter and lands a straight left hand, then Silva wraps him up and turns Dober’s back to the fence. Dober reverses the position with an underhook, tries to throw elbows with his free arm but gets blocked. Silva separates, ducks and jives to dodge more punches, then flicks out a jab that bloodies Dober’s nose. Dober is chasing after Silva in the closing moments, but the Brazilian evades.

Sherdog Scores

Jordan Breen scores the round 10-9 Dober
Chris Nelson scores the round 10-9 Dober
Jeff Sherwood scores the round 10-9 Dober

Round 2

(+ Enlarge) | Photo: G. Venga/Sherdog.com

Likely the worst stoppage in UFC history.
Dober starts round two with several kicks to Silva’s legs, but Silva switches to orthodox stance and begins avoiding the chopping shots. After eating a left hand, Silva changes levels and brings Dober to the ground with a high double-leg. Dober posts with his right hand and stands, only to be wrapped up in a high body lock and dragged back to the mat. Two minutes into the round, Silva works from Dober’s deep half guard. Silva passes to side control and then jumps to back-mount as Dober tries to roll over. Dober escapes out the back door and stands up, and Silva follows. Silva jumps guard with a guillotine, but the choke doesn’t look tight and Dober, in Silva’s half-guard, is in good position to escape. Just as Dober seems to be freeing his head, referee Eduardo Herdy waves off the fight, apparently believing Dober had gone unconscious. There’s a moment of confusion, but Herdy has already signaled an end to the bout and this one is over. Dober is understandably irate.

The Official Result

Leandro Silva def. Drew Dober via Technical Submission (Guillotine Choke) R2 2:45

Edimilson Souza vs. Katsunori Kikuno

Round 1

(+ Enlarge) | Photo: G. Venga/Sherdog.com

Kikuno fell face first after a right hand.
Kikuno circles clockwise around the outside while Souza follows from the center of the cage. The featherweights spend the first 90 seconds feeling out the range, then Souza connects with a straight right that sends the ducking Kikuno slumping to the canvas. Kikuno unconsciously rolls to his back, where he’s greeted by a hammer fist that sends referee Osiris Maia into action.

The Official Result

Edimilson Souza def. Katsunori Kikuno via KO (Punch) R1 1:31

Francisco Trinaldo vs. Akbarh Arreola

Round 1

Trinaldo catches Arreola’s first low kick and hustles the Mexican fighter against the cage. “Massaranduba” pins Arreola to the fence with an underhook and leans on him, then throws a few foot stomps. Trinaldo quickly changes levels, elevates Arreola and dumps him to the ground at the base of the fence. Arreola closes his guard around Trinaldo and hits the Brazilian with a couple elbows from underneath. Trinaldo is scoring with elbows of his own while fending off an armbar attempt. Arreola keeps shifting underneath, opening his guard intermittently to hunt for a submission, but Trinaldo is staying heavy on top. Trinaldo creates some space and tries to get busy with punches in the final minute, but Arreola does well to cover up and deflect the strikes.

Sherdog Scores

Jordan Breen scores the round 10-9 Trinaldo
Chris Nelson scores the round 10-9 Trinaldo

Round 2

Trinaldo bested Arreola at UFC Rio.
Arreola throws a few low kicks, then has a left high kick deflected by Trinaldo’s forearm. Trinaldo nearly catches the next leg kick, but Arreola yanks the limb away in time. Arreola goes to the kick one time too many, and now Trinaldo catches it and hustles “El Caballero” to the ground. Trinaldo grinds away with elbows and hammer fists from Arreola’s closed guard. Arreola is trying to strike from his back but is being smothered by Trinaldo, who has the Mexican jammed against the fence. With 30 seconds left in the round and not much progress being made on the ground, the lightweights are stood up by referee John McCarthy. Trinaldo connects with a hard overhand left, takes a kick to the body and then knocks the off-balance Arreola to the ground with a body punch as the round ends.

Sherdog Scores

Jordan Breen scores the round 10-9 Trinaldo
Chris Nelson scores the round 10-9 Trinaldo
Jeff Sherwood scores the round 10-9 Trinaldo

Round 3

Arreola is swinging for Trinaldo’s head but not coming up with much, as the Brazilian stays on his back foot in the opening minute of the final round. Arreola keeps plodding after his opponent and walks into a combination. Trinaldo catches another kick but can’t convert it into a takedown this time. Now it’s Arreola’s turn to catch a body kick and land a straight left hand before releasing. Halfway through the round, Trinaldo tries to turn another caught kick into a takedown but is stifled by Arreola. A hard left hand connects for Trinaldo midway through the round, and another pair touch Arreola’s face in the ensuing minute. With 65 seconds on the clock, Trinaldo changes levels for a double-leg takedown. Arreola seems to sprawl on it at first, then turns his hips and drops to guard, surrendering top position. Trinaldo swims through Arreola’s guard with punches to close out the bout.

Sherdog Scores

Jordan Breen scores the round 10-9 Trinaldo (30-27 Trinaldo)
Chris Nelson scores the round 10-9 Trinaldo (30-27 Trinaldo)

Andre Fili vs. Godofredo Castro

Round 1

(+ Enlarge) | Photo: G. Venga/Sherdog.com

Castro hit a flying triangle on Fili.
Castro misses with a flying knee and a huge overhand right to start the fight, then shoves away Fili as the Team Alpha Male fighter changes levels. Castro gets hold of a single-leg, switches to a body lock and trips Fili to the ground. Fili pops right back to his feet and puts Castro’s back to the cage. “Pepey” leaps into the air and jumps guard with a flying triangle, but Fili postures up to defend. Castro has the triangle cinched up but Fili is surviving, stacking up Castro to try and relieve the pressure. Finally, after a minute-long struggle, Castro finds the angle and pulls down on Fili’s head to force the tap.

The Official Result

Godofredo Castro def. Andre Fili via Submission (Triangle Choke) R1 3:14

Gilbert Burns vs. Alex Oliveira

Round 1

Oliveira takes a leg kick from Burns and blasts over the top with a straight left. “Durinho” gets hold of his countryman and trips Oliveira to the ground, then shoves him up against the fence. Oliveira is quick to get back to his feet, where he reverses Burns against the fence and throws a few low knees. Burns separates and covers up as Oliveira fires off a combination which ends with a solid uppercut. Oliveira counters a Burns left with a heavy right hook, and now Burns covers up as he backs away toward the fence. Oliveira is looking to take off his opponent’s head with huge right hands and uppercuts, while Burns is fighting much more defensively in the final minute of the opening round. Oliveira knocks Burns backward with a left hand in the closing moments, and Burns heads back to his corner with swelling beneath his left eye.

Round 2

Burns rallied to snuff out Oliveira.
Burns closes the gap quickly and shoves Oliveira against the fence with an underhook, looking to trip the “Cowboy” to the ground. Oliveira defends for the better part of the minute and the crowd boos as the action stalls. Oliveira reverses the position and slugs at Burns with punches, but “Durinho” covers up and circles away. The lightweights reset in the center, where Oliveira sends an uppercut through Burns’ tight guard. Two minutes left in the middle frame and Oliveira still has Burns on his back foot. Burns lands a couple counter right hands, but he’s still taking harder shots from Oliveira in the exchanges. Another uppercut gets through for Oliveira, then a sweeping right hand and a body blow. Oliveira spends the closing moments of the round holding Burns against the fence, delivering knees to the legs of the jiu-jitsu black belt.

Sherdog Scores

Jordan Breen scores the round 10-9 Oliveira
Chris Nelson scores the round 10-9 Oliveira
Jeff Sherwood scores the round 10-9 Oliveira

Round 3

Burns gets a body lock, trips Oliveira to the ground and passes straight to full mount. Oliveira squeezes a knee inside and uses it to force Burns back to half guard, but Burns soon moves back to mount. Oliveira nearly sweeps out from underneath, only Burns traps his right arm in an omoplata as they exchange positions. Burns is sitting up now, holding Oliveira in place with the omoplata to land a couple punches to the head. Oliveira rolls to his back, surrendering full mount to Burns in order to free the arm. Burns is looking to set up a triangle from mount, then switches to a belly-down armbar. Oliveira tries to roll out, but his escape attempt only allows Burns to switch to a standard armbar. Oliveira resists for a moment, then has to tap out as Burns extends the arm to its breaking point.

The Official Result

Gilbert Burns def. Alex Oliveira via Submission (Armbar) R3 4:14

Amanda Nunes vs. Shayna Baszler

Round 1

(+ Enlarge) | Photo: G. Venga/Sherdog.com

Nunes chopped down Baszler.
Nunes chops at Baszler’s lead leg with a hard kick, then touches the “Queen of Spades” with a right hand over the top. Baszler keeps walking after the Brazilian and gets stung with a body shot. The veteran dives for Nunes’ legs, but Nunes just limp-legs away. More punches from Nunes find their mark on Baszler’s face, and then a low kick sends the American to the ground in agony. The low kick clearly blew out Baszler’s knee, but just to ensure a finish, Nunes pounds away with hammer fists on her fetal opponent until referee Mario Yamasaki ends the fight.

The Official Result

Amanda Nunes def. Shayna Baszler via TKO (Leg Kick) R1 1:56

Leonardo Santos vs. Tony Martin

Round 1

Santos picks at the lead leg of Martin with low kicks in the opening minute, moving the American around the edge of the cage. Martin grabs Santos in a body lock and turns him agains the fence, only to be reversed by the BJJ black belt. Santos gets reversed, and now it’s Martin tripping his man to the ground. Santos stands up quickly, still held against the cage by Martin, who throws knees at the Nova Uniao fighter’s legs. Martin is still looking for another trip takedown while referee John McCarthy calls for action. The lightweights take turns in the outside position of the clinch until McCarthy separates them with 70 seconds on the clock. Santos scores with a few more low kicks; Martin answers with an uppercut that splits Santos’ guard, and a combination behind it. Santos comes in to try a takedown in the closing seconds of the round and winds up being shoved against the cage by Martin’s double underhooks.

Martin throws a hard right hand, misses, and the momentum puts him on the ground. He bounces back up and hits Santos with a leg kick which is answered in kind by the Brazilian. An overhand right connects for Santos before Martin rushes into the pocket to clinch up. Santos uses the American’s momentum to toss him to the ground near the fence, and now Santos passes to full mount with more than three minutes remaining in the round. Martin gives up his back and Santos quickly takes it, sinking in both hooks before pulling Martin backward to the canvas. Santos immediately begins hunting for a rear-naked choke, and once his right arm gets underneath his opponent’s chin, Martin has no choice but to tap out.

The Official Result

Leonardo Santos def. Tony Martin via Submission (Rear-Naked Choke) R2 2:29

Erick Silva vs. Josh Koscheck

Round 1

(+ Enlarge) | Photo: G. Venga/Sherdog.com

Koscheck has lost five straight.
Koscheck comes out swinging overhand rights, then ducks under a punch from Silva and nearly has his back taken on the feet. Koscheck turns around to push the Brazilian against the cage and decks him with a short elbow in the clinch. Holding Silva in place with over-unders, Koscheck slowly works for a takedown. It’s not enough for referee Mario Yamasaki, who separates the welterweights about 90 seconds into the round. Koscheck ducks under another big punch from Silva, but when he throws a leg kick, Silva counters over the top with a straight left hand that sends the American Kickboxing Academy fighter to the ground. Koscheck tries a desperation single-leg and winds up being shoved to his back. Silva sets up in Koscheck’s closed guard, then allows the veteran to stand midway through the round. Another straight left rocks Koscheck, who backs up to the fence. Silva allows him some space to walk out to the center, where “Indio” hits Koscheck with a hard kick to the guts. Koscheck tries to score with the overhand right and slips to the ground, and when he gets back up, Silva is waiting with punches. Koscheck tries a single-leg and leaves his neck exposed, allowing Silva to snatch a guillotine choke and pull guard. Koscheck taps out seconds after they hit the ground.

The Official Result

Erick Silva def. Josh Koscheck via Submission (Guillotine Choke) R1 4:21

Demian Maia vs. Ryan LaFlare

Round 1

Referee John McCarthy is the third man in the cage for tonight’s welterweight main event, with judges Marco Aurelio Borges, Guilherme Bravo and Eric Colon scoring at cageside. LaFlare connects with an early jab and then rocks Maia’s head with a right hook. The southpaws circle in the center of the Octagon, where LaFlare touches Maia with a left hook. Maia changes levels and plows LaFlare to the canvas, passes to side control and nearly takes the back of LaFlare as the American tries to stand. Instead, LaFlare spins around and puts Maia in half guard. Maia quickly moves back to side control, then full mount, but LaFlare gets a knee in and pushes the Brazilian away again. With two minutes left in the round, Maia achieves full mount for the second time. This time, LaFlare tries to buck him off, but Maia stays heavy. LaFlare gets a knee in between himself and Maia, again putting him back in half guard. Defending against short strikes from Maia, LaFlare is warned by referee McCarthy to mind the fingers on his open hand.

TJ De Santis scores the round 10-9 Maia
Chris Nelson scores the round 10-9 Maia

Round 2

Both men are swinging and missing with punches in the opening minute, with occassional clinch attempts from LaFlare which Maia denies. Now it’s Maia shooting for LaFlare’s legs and being turned away. The next double-leg shot from Maia yields better results, putting LaFlare on his back a few feet away from the fence. Maia tries to advance past LaFlare’s half guard but stalls out, so he leans left to right across the American’s body to frame up a kimura. He abandons the submission attempt to hop over to full mount with 90 seconds remaining in the round. Maia flattens out LaFlare, throwing sporadic right hands until he’s able to set up an arm-triangle choke. LaFlare elevates Maia to escape the choke, but Maia is back in mount for the closing seconds of the round, dropping punches on LaFlare.

Maia outclassed LaFlare on the floor.
LaFlare fakes a level change and flicks out a few jabs which come up short as he chases after the backpedaling Maia, who counters with a jab which connects. LaFlare rushes at Maia, who changes levels and gets stuffed. LaFlare denies the next shot from Maia, too, and this one turns into a takedown for the American with just over three minutes left in the round. Maia traps LaFlare’s arms, allowing no offense from the man on top, and now the Brazilian forces LaFlare to bail with a heel hook attempt. Maia dives straight for another takedown of his own, gets it, and soon finds himself mounting LaFlare once again. Maia works punches from the mount, thumping LaFlare’s body and head until the Blackzilians product kicks off the fence and bucks Maia out of mount. With 65 seconds on the clock, it’s full mount for Maia again. LaFlare bucks him off before Maia can inflict any damage, but the jiu-jitsu ace finishes the round with a couple hard left hands from side control.

Maia puts a left hand on LaFlare’s temple and easily denies a takedown attempt from the American. LaFlare is trying to do something, lunging after Maia with punches and leg kicks, but Maia won’t let him get into range. Maia gets sprawled on, stands up to take LaFlare’s back standing, and winds up in top position as LaFlare rolls through to prevent the back-take. LaFlare tries a kimura on Maia’s right arm from underneath but soon gives it up. Maia passes from half guard to full mount in the center of the cage, but again LaFlare pushes him back out. Maia moves to mount again halfway through the round and goes back to the arm-triangle setup. LaFlare gives the thumbs-up to referee McCarthy, and he doesn’t look to be in danger just yet. Maia is slowly tightening the choke from mount, his right arm wrapped around LaFlare’s neck. LaFlare turns into the choke to loosen it, and now Maia gives it up to ride out the final 20 seconds of the round in mount.

Maia sticks a jab, but LaFlare answers with a jab, a body kick and a straight right. LaFlare sprawls on a takedown attempt and stands up, leaving the exhausted Maia on the ground. LaFlare has three minutes left to do something and he knows it; he’s moving forward on Maia constantly, scoring with right hands and leg kicks. Maia shoots and gets rolled to the ground, where LaFlare briefly holds side control before opting to stand. Maia shoots and eats a knee from LaFlare, then flops to the ground. Referee McCarthy gives Maia a stern order to stand up; the Brazilian obliges, albeit slowly. The next time the sequence repeats, McCarthy threatens to take a point from Maia. Ninety seconds left and LaFlare is chasing Maia around the cage, ripping him with a big body shot. Maia shoots a slow shot and gets drilled with another knee, but this time he follows through and manages to put LaFlare on the mat. LaFlare tries to elevate and sweep, and he finally gets out from under Maia with seconds left on the clock.
