UFC Fight Night Prelims: Shawn Jordan Sinks Derrick Lewis in Heavyweight Rematch

American Top Team’s Jordan (18-6, 6-3 UFC) slowed “The Black Beast” with multiple takedowns in the first round, methodically draining his gas tank. His chin held up during the standup exchanges, though Lewis opened a cut near his left eye during a violent flurry late in round one. Less than a minute into the second, Jordan cracked his adversary with an exquisite reverse hook kick and trailed him to the mat. He quickly climbed to mount and then Lewis’ back, putting him away with unanswered punches and hammerfists.
Jordan -- who also defeated Lewis at a regional event in 2010 --
will carry a three-fight winning streak into his next bout.
Akhmedov Stops Veteran Ebersole
Jackson-Wink MMA representative Omari Akhmedov stopped Brian Ebersole on a first-round technical knockout in a preliminary welterweight encounter. A right knee injury, suffered while absorbing a leg kick, left Ebersole (51-17-1, 5-3 UFC) unable to continue and forced him to bow out in between rounds one and two.
Akhmedov (15-2, 3-1 UFC), who replaced the injured Alan Jouban on short notice, was in control from the start. The Dagestani brute tore into Ebersole with kicks to the body and legs, the occasional overhand right and gruesome hooks to the body. Upon conclusion of round one, Ebersole returned to his corner and informed the referee that he could go no further.
The 27-year-old Akhmedov has rattled off 13 wins across his past 14 outings.
Wade Wins Fifth Straight
Repeated takedowns and superiority in the scrambles carried former Ring of Combat champion Chris Wade to a unanimous decision over Christos Giagos in an undercard tilt at 155 pounds. Wade (10-1, 3-0 UFC) swept the scorecards with 29-28, 29-28 and 30-27 marks from the judges.
Giagos (11-4, 1-2 UFC) fought well in spurts -- he dropped the Long Island MMA rep to a knee with a crackling right hand in the first round -- but failed to maintain a safe distance. Wade opened a cut near his right eye with a standing elbow strike, delivered takedowns when the mood arose and successfully countered reversals form the Californian on the canvas, where he always seemed to be one step ahead. Giagos grew more and more frustrated as the fight deepened and fatigue began to take hold. Wade closed with a strong round three, as he executed a pair of takedowns over the final five minutes and withstood his opponent’s advances on the feet.
Proctor Guillotine Finishes Edwards
Onetime Reality Fighting titleholder Joe Proctor choked Justin Edwards unconscious with a third-round guillotine choke in a preliminary lightweight scrap. A graduate of Season 15 of “The Ultimate Fighter,” Proctor (11-3, 4-2 UFC) closed the deal 4:58 into round three.
Edwards (8-5, 2-5 UFC) enjoyed some success throughout the 15-minute duel, with active hands, a punishing clinch, a few spinning back kicks and a pair of takedowns. Proctor refused to wilt. He picked up his pace in the second round and hit his stride in the third, where Edwards seemed to run out of steam. In the waning moments, Proctor blasted the Jorge Gurgel protégé with a knee to the body, flurried with punches and snatched the guillotine during the exchange. Edwards retreated to all-fours, but the choke was in place. Proctor adjusted his grip, cranked and waited for his counterpart to go limp.
Edwards, 32, has lost three fights in a row.
Collier Deals Abreu First Defeat
Former Resurrection Fighting Alliance champion Jake Collier won for the sixth time in seven appearances, as he eked out a split decision over the previously unbeaten Ricardo Abreu in a three-round undercard battle at 185 pounds. All three judges struck 29-28 scorecards, two of them siding with Collier (9-2, 1-1 UFC).
A stinging jab and a steady stream of kicks to the body and legs were the weapons of choice for Collier, who filled in for the injured Daniel Sarafian on short notice. He stayed busy with his hands and feet throughout the 15-minute encounter, testing the Brazilian’s gas tank like it had never been tested before. Abreu (5-1, 1-1 UFC) leaned on winging power punches, most of them hooks, and timely takedowns, though he never successfully corralled the American on the mat. That proved costly, as the Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt tasted defeat for the first time in his career.
Quinonez Choke Submits Overweight Morales
Alliance MMA’s Jose Alberto Quinonez submitted fellow “Ultimate Fighter: Latin America” finalist Leonardo Morales with a first-round rear-naked choke in their preliminary bantamweight clash. Morales (4-2, 0-2 UFC), who missed weight for the match, conceded defeat 2:34 into round one.
Quinonez (4-2, 1-1 UFC) walked through a few kicks, executed a takedown inside the first minute and eventually settled in side control. The 24-year-old Mexican then wheeled to the back in one fluid motion, set his hooks and cinched a palm-to-palm choke for the finish.
The victory halted a two-fight losing streak for Quinonez.
