Chris Wade ran out of gas against the wrong man.

Rustam Khabilov utilized repeated takedowns and vicious ground-and-pound in claiming a unanimous decision over Wade at UFC Fight Night “Overeem vs. Arlovski” on Sunday at Ahoy Rotterdam in Rotterdam, Netherlands. All three cageside judges scored it for Khabilov (19-3, 5-2 UFC): 30-27, 29-28 and 29-28.

A jumping switch kick from Wade floored Khabilov in the second round but only seemed to light a fire under him. The 29-year-old Russian swept into top position, threatened with a triangle choke and later escaped to his feet and landed a takedown. Round three was all Khabilov. A replacement for the injured Rashid Magomedov, he grounded the visibly fatigued Wade repeatedly and battered him with vicious ground-and-pound, leaving no doubt as to who was superior.

The loss snapped a six-fight winning streak for Wade (11-2, 4-1 UFC).

Cedenblad Head Kick, Uppercuts Dispatch McLellan

Magnus Cedenblad took care of Garreth McLellan with a second-round head kick and follow-up punches in a preliminary middleweight clash. In his first appearance since October 2014, Cedenblad (14-4, 4-1 UFC) finished it 47 seconds into round two.

Troubled by the Swede’s length, McLellan (13-4, 1-2 UFC) circled on the perimeter and looked for openings he never found. Cedenblad sat him down with a counter right hand in the first round and did even more damage in the second, where he connected with a partially blocked head kick that seemed to short circuit McLellan. Cedenblad then cut loose with 10 unanswered uppercuts that resulted in the stoppage.

The 34-year-old Cedenblad has rattled off four consecutive victories, three of them finishes.

Emmett Edges Tuck on Scorecards

Team Alpha Male’s Josh Emmett kept his perfect professional record intact in a successful Octagon debut, as he escaped with a split decision over Jon Tuck in a three-round undercard confrontation at 155 pounds. Scores were 29-28 and 29-28 for Emmett, 29-28 for Tuck.

A short-notice replacement for the injured Nick Hein, Emmett (10-0, 1-0 UFC) perplexed Tuck with his aggression and movement for the better part of two rounds. The overhand right was his weapon of choice, as he paired it with the occasional leg kick. In the third round, Tuck uncorked a wheel kick that caught the West Coast Fighting Championship titleholder on his left hand. The impact resulted in a compound fracture to Emmett’s ring finger and forced him to retreat until the final bell. Tuck (9-3, 3-3 UFC) pursued him with head kicks and knees but could not author the finish he needed.

Madadi Uppercut Stops Cabral

Reza Madadi disposed of onetime Brazilian jiu-jitsu world champion Yan Cabral with third-round punches in a preliminary lightweight encounter. Madadi (14-4, 3-2 UFC) drew the curtain 1:56 into round three, as the Sweden-based Iranian posted his ninth win in 11 appearances.

The two lightweights spent extended time jockeying for position in the clinch. Cabral (12-3, 2-3 UFC) moved out to an early lead, as he secured a takedown in the first round, climbed to the back and set his hooks before fishing for the rear-naked choke. Madadi withstood his advances and slowly turned the tide in his favor. “Mad Dog” executed a takedown in round two and then lit up Cabral in round three. There, Madadi blasted the Brazilian with a ringing right uppercut that had him out on his feet. After a follow-up volley of punches on the dazed Cabral, referee Leon Roberts had seen enough.

Brilliant Horiguchi Handles Seery

Blinding hand speed, beautiful combination punching and well-timed takedowns paired with violent ground-and-pound carried American Top Team’s Kyoji Horiguchi to a unanimous verdict over former Cage Warriors Fighting Championship titleholder Neil Seery in a 15-minute undercard battle at 125 pounds. Horiguchi (17-2, 6-1 UFC) swept the scorecards with 30-26, 30-27 and 30-27 marks from the judges.

Seery (16-12, 3-3 UFC) survived a number of attacks that might have put away lesser men. Horiguchi floored him twice in the first round, a short left hook and stabbing jab the culprits. Seery’s situation did not improve in rounds two in three, where he sustained a pair of cuts near his right eye and staggered on the end of another left hook.

Horiguchi has won 11 of his last 12 fights.

Replacement Edwards Outduels Waters

Onetime British Association of Mixed Martial Arts titleholder Leon Edwards won for the third time in four outings, as he took a three-round unanimous decision from Dominic Waters in a preliminary welterweight scrap. All three cageside judges scored it 30-27 for Edwards (11-3, 3-2 UFC), who filled in for the injured Peter Sobotta.

Outside of a suplex in the second round, Waters (9-5, 0-3 UFC) was ineffective. Edwards answered a first-round takedown with one of his own and achieved full mount, applying his ground-and-pound and setting the tone for what was to come. The 24-year-old Brit also had some success on the feet, connecting with a thudding knee to the chest and a glancing front kick to the face. Edwards put the finishing touches on the victory late in round three, where he sprawled on a Waters takedown and piled up points with short punches and elbows.

Sasaki Choke Submits Gates

Former Shooto Pacific Rim champion Yuta Sasaki submitted Willie Gates with a second-round rear-naked choke in an undercard pairing at 125 pounds. A short-notice replacement for Patrick Holohan, Sasaki (19-3-2, 2-2 UFC) brought it to a close 3:30 into round two.

Gates (12-7, 1-3 UFC) failed to keep a safe distance between himself and the Japanese grappler. Sasaki executed multiple takedowns in both rounds. He advanced to the back in round two, set his hooks and cinched the choke near the base of the cage. After a brief struggle, Gates tapped.

The victory halted a two-fight losing streak for Sasaki.
