Frank Mir’s resurgence is proving to be quite lucrative.
The ex-heavyweight king captured a $50,000 “Performance of the Night” bonus for his first-round knockout of Todd Duffee in the UFC Fight Night headliner at the Valley View Casino Center in San Diego on Wednesday night. A short left hook knocked Duffee unconscious and sent him tumbling face first to the mat just 73 seconds into the bout, giving Mir his second straight KO in the Octagon. In his last outing, Mir stopped Antonio Silva 1:40 into the first round at UFC Fight Night in Brazil.
Meanwhile, Tony Ferguson garnered the evening’s other $50,000 performance award for his thrashing of Strikeforce veteran Josh Thomson in the co-main event. “El Cucuy” authored a versatile offensive performance, but it was a hard elbow in the second round the put Thomson on his heels. While Ferguson was unable to finish his foe, he was in complete control in earning a unanimous decision.
Finally, the entertaining welterweight showdown between Alan Jouban and Matt Dwyer was a relatively easy choice for “Fight of the Night.” While the contest featured plenty of back-and-forth action, Jouban , who won the bout via unanimous decision, authored the signature moment when he dazed Dwyer with a cartwheel kick at the end of third round.
