He is the man no one in the Ultimate Fighting Championship welterweight division wants to face.

Demian Maia tipped the scales at 171 pounds for his five-round showdown with former Strikeforce, Shooto and EliteXC champion Jake Shields (171) in the UFC Fight Night 29 main event on Wednesday at the Jose Correa Arena in Barueri, Brazil. Welterweight co-headliners Dong Hyum Kim (171) and Erick Silva (170) also met their contracted weight requirements without issue at Tuesday’s official weigh-in.

Shields has not yet posted back-to-back wins since arriving in the UFC in October 2010. The 34-year-old Cesar Gracie disciple last fought at UFC 161 in June, when he settled for a controversial split decision over Tyron Woodley at the MTS Centre in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. A Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt with limited standup skills, Shields has delivered 25 of his 28 professional victories by submission or decision. He owns a 3-2 mark inside the Octagon.

Maia has won all three of his fights since downshifting to 170 pounds. The 35-year-old grappling specialist last competed at UFC 156 in February, when he cruised to a lopsided unanimous verdict against the American Kickboxing Academy’s Jon Fitch at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas. A 2007 Abu Dhabi Combat Club Submission Wrestling World Championships gold medalist, Maia has compiled a 12-4 record since entering the UFC a little less than six years ago.

UFC Fight Night 29 “Maia vs. Shields” -- which airs live on Fox Sports 1 at 7 p.m. ET/4 p.m. PT -- will also feature a welterweight scrap pitting Mike Pierce (171) against Brazilian leg lock aficionado Rousimar Palhares (171), a bantamweight tilt matching Team Alpha Male’s T.J. Dillashaw (136) with Raphael Assuncao (135) and a pair of light heavyweight battles, as Thiago Silva (*208) collides with Matt Hamill (205) and Fabio Maldonado (204) locks horns with Joey Beltran (205).

Two hours prior, Fox Sports 1 will also carry four preliminary bouts: Ildemar Alcantara (171) vs. Igor Araujo (171), Yan Almeida Cabral (170) vs. David Mitchell (171), Chris Cariaso (125) vs. Iliarde Santos (126) and Alan Patrick Silva Alves (155) vs. Garett Whiteley (156).
