UFC Fight Night 29 Medical Suspensions: Mike Pierce Sidelined Up to 6 Months

Mike Pierce could be sidelined for six months. | Sherdog.com

UFC welterweight Mike Pierce was handed a 180-day suspension by the Brazilian MMA Athletic Commission (CABMMA) following his participation at Wednesday night’s UFC Fight Night 29.

Pierce, who can return to action sooner if he receives clearance by an orthopedic physician, was submitted in just 31 seconds by a Rousimar Palhares heel hook. However, controversy emerged from the finish when “Toquinho” did not immediately release the hold after Pierce tapped out and the referee intervened. Palhares was banned from the UFC for his conduct and received a 120-day disciplinary suspension from the CABMMA.

Erick Silva received the second-longest medical suspension, as the Brazilian prospect was knocked out by Dong Hyun Kim in the second round of their welterweight co-headliner. “Indio” must spend at least 60 days on the shelf with no contact for the first 45 days.

Kim, meanwhile, received a 30-day suspension, as did welterweights Jake Shields and Demian Maia, who battled in the evening’s main event from Jose Correa Gymnasium in Barueri, Sao Paulo, Brazil. Shields walked away with a split decision win the grappling-heavy, 25-minute contest that closed the evening’s Fox Sports 1 broadcast.
