UFC Advised No. 1 Contender Donald Cerrone to Wait for Lightweight Title Shot

Just this once, it appears that Donald Cerrone has agreed to scale back his manic fight schedule.

The Jackson-Wink MMA standout secured the lightweight division’s No. 1 contender’s spot with a second-round technical knockout of John Makdessi at UFC 187, Cerrone’s eighth consecutive triumph within the Las Vegas-based promotion. There was one catch: “Cowboy” would have to wait until Rafael dos Anjos made his targeted December return from a torn meniscus before he could receive his shot at 155-pound gold.

According to a Wednesday report from “UFC Tonight,” Cerrone has agreed to wait for dos Anjos -- but not before he asked for another fight in the interim. However, he eventually relented after being advised by promotion officials to take some time off.

Dos Anjos, who tore his MCL in training prior to capturing the 155-pound belt at UFC 185, was the last man to defeat Cerrone, taking a three-round verdict over the WEC veteran at UFC Fight Night “Condit vs. Kampmann 2” in August 2013. Since then, Cerrone has bested the likes of Edson Barboza, Jim Miller, Eddie Alvarez, Myles Jury and Benson Henderson during his current hot streak.
