UFC 195 Results: ‘Lawler vs. Condit’ Play-by-Play & Updates

Edgar Garcia vs. Sheldon Westcott

Round 1

The southpaw Westcott flicks out jabs and leg kicks as the welterweights test the range in the opening minute. After Garcia sticks the Canadian with a stiff right hand, Westcott changes levels and drives him to the ground near the fence. Westcott triangles Garcia’s legs and tries to work his way into full mount, landing a few hard left hands along the way. Garcia turns his back to avoid the shots and now Westcott takes back-mount, flattening out his opponent to score with more left hands. Garcia continues to eat punches, first under the arm and then to the sides of the head when he goes belly-down. Westcott has landed a few dozen unanswered strikes at this point, while referee Chris Tognoni watches from nearby, telling him to “work to improve.” Westcott keeps the punishment coming and Tognoni finally stops the fight.

Joe Soto vs. Michinori Tanaka

Round 1

Tanaka takes the center of the cage in a wide stance but doesn’t let loose with any strikes, and he’s forced to step backward as Soto presses forward with quick right hands and leg kicks. Soto dodges a pair of big hooks but gets clipped with a right hand behind it. Tanaka fends off Soto’s first takedown attempt and brushes him out of the pocket with another quick right. Soto grazes with reaching overhand left as the bantamweights continue to circle at the halfway mark of round one, with neither having gained an advantage to this point. Tanaka sticks a jab, lands a leg kick and then picks Soto’s ankle for a takedown in the outer Octagon. Soto throws up rubber guard and puts his left shin across Tanaka’s throat for a gogoplata attempt. Tanaka buries his head and slips loose of the choke, allowing Soto to stand in the process just before the end of the round.

Round 2

Tanaka gets busier with his hands in the opening minute of round two, catching Soto with fast hooks to the body and head as the Japanese fighter moves around the outside. Soto works from the center but is having trouble navigating past Tanaka’s strikes. Tanaka hits another takedown and once again falls into a submission attempt from Soto, this time a guillotine choke from full guard. Tanaka works his way out of the choke, and now he works from Soto’s guard with two minutes on the clock. Good ground-and-pound landing for Tanaka, elbows and punches, until Soto threatens with a leglock. Tanaka has to reset but manages to hold down Soto for the remainder of the frame.

Round 3

Soto is on the march early in the final frame, swinging for the fences with big punches over the top and mixing in a few leg kicks, too. Tanaka is still landing but his punches don’t have the same pop, and now Soto is able to get inside to land his strikes. Tanaka hits a trip takedown but gets rolled right over the top, and both men scramble back to their feet. Soto sticks a hard jab, dodges a punch from Tanaka and waves the Japanese fighter forward. Both men are grinning as they trade hard jabs, then Tanaka blocks a right high kick. Soto connects with a one-two, then a hard left hand which sends Tanaka shooting for another takedown. Soto grabs a guillotine on his way to the ground but Tanaka postures up high to alleviate the pressure on his neck. Soto continues to crank the choke with two minutes left in the fight; Tanaka doesn’t seem overly concerned, and sure enough, he manages to pulls his head loose after about 20 seconds. The 135ers stand with 80 seconds on the clock. It’s all Soto right now as he jabs his way forward, bloodying the nose of the fading Tanaka, whose hands are dropping lower with each exchange. Soto keeps landing hard down the stretch, then plows Tanaka to the mat with 15 seconds left. Soto takes Tanaka’s back and hunts for a rear-naked choke but can’t find it before the horn.

Joseph Duffy vs. Dustin Poirier

Round 1

Poirier opens with a straight left hand and comes in behind it with an outside leg kick. Another left hand stings Duffy, then an uppercut and a right hook force the Irishman to clinch up and hold Poirier on the fence. “The Diamond” breaks loose right away, but Duffy seems to have cleared the cobwebs as he fires back with low kicks and jabs of his own. Duffy strikes off his back foot now, sticking another jab and then tagging Poirier with a right hook. Poirier covers up against the fence momentarily, then steps back to the middle to continue throwing hands. Poirier eats an uppercut, takes a right hand on the temple, then grabs Duffy in the collar tie and bombs back with uppercuts. With two minutes left, Poirier hits a double-leg takedown at the fence; Duffy is sporting a bloody nose from that last series of strikes. Poirier stands up and decks the sitting Duffy with a hard elbow to the face, then threatens with a front headlock. Duffy gets back to his feet, still held against the cage by Poirier’s underhook. Poirier breaks away with an uppercut, eats a right hook from Duffy and gives him one right back. The lightweights finish the wild opening round on their feet, both men leaking blood from the nose.

Round 2

Duffy emerges for round two with a swollen left eye but otherwise looks no worse for wear as he and Poirier continue to snipe with punches in the center. Poirier ducks inside, gets an underhook and pushes “Irish Joe” to the fence, then brings him back to the mat with a snap double-leg. Blood is spraying from Poirier’s nose as he works to control Duffy’s legs, finally flattening him out on the mat two minutes into the round. Duffy retains full guard and tries to shift his hips underneath, but Poirier is controlling from top position, landing hard punches and elbows to Duffy’s already lumped-up face. Poirier gets busy with elbows inside the last 80 seconds of the round, and Duffy looks to be fading on the bottom, just clinging on while Poirier unloads down the stretch. Referee Chris Tognoni looks close to stepping in near the end, but Duffy will survive to see round three.

Round 3

Duffy comes out swinging to start the final frame, but Poirier slides backward to avoid the strikes and then reverses momentum to take down Duffy once again. Still bleeding heavily from the nose, Poirier wraps up Duffy’s legs to hold him down, then tries to switch to a bodylock. Duffy nearly hits a sweep in the transition, gets put on his back again and dives for a heel hook on Poirier’s left leg. Poirier pulls away and yanks the leg free, then spins around before Duffy can stand and flattens him out near the center of the cage. There’s not enough action on the floor for referee Tognoni, who stands up the fighters with 80 seconds remaining. Duffy presses forward, ripping into Poirier’s body with hooks and tagging him with a left upstairs. Poirier drives for another takedown in the middle, hits it, and now it’s the American on top with 30 seconds remaining. Duffy throws up his legs and catches Poirier in a last-second triangle attempt but he runs out of time.

Drew Dober vs. Scott Holtzman

Round 1

Dober comes down the middle with a hard left hand, then the southpaw hops backward to deny Holtzman’s first attempt to close the distance. Holtzman steps forward again, eating a left hook in order to grab hold of Dober and pin him to the cage. Dober turns the tables by reversing Holtzman with over-unders, and the lightweights spend a minute jockeying for position on the fence. Referee Herb Dean warns Holtzman for grabbing the fence as he tries to corral Dober up against the cage. Halfway through the round, they finally hit the mat and it’s Dober landing on top after a trip takedown. Holtzman quickly works back to his feet, and Dober releases the clinch to circle back to the center inside the last two minutes. Holtzman clinches again, and again it’s Dober hitting a trip to bring the fight to the floor. Holtzman stands, still wrapped up in a rear waistlock, and gets another warning from ref Dean for grabbing the fence. The 155ers separate inside the last minute and Holtzman takes a knee after absorbing a left hook. “Hot Sauce” stands to deliver a kick to Dober’s midsection before time runs out.

Round 2

Holtzman defends an early double-leg attempt and puts Dober’s back against the fence. The lightweights separate after a few seconds and Dober once again drops Holtzman to a knee with a punch to the temple. Holtzman pops back up, defends another takedown attempt but eats a slashing elbow from Dober as they break apart. Holtzman catches Dober ducking and puts a right high kick on his face. Dober eats it well and presses forward, walking right into a lovely trip from Holtzman, who takes top position for the first time in the fight with half the round remaining. Dober posts and moves to stand, nearly has his back taken in the transition and has to roll through to shake Holtzman off his back. Holtzman, now leaking blood from a cut above his left eye, sets up in Dober’s half guard and wraps him up around the waist to try and hold him on the ground. Dober scoots backward to the fence, stands and gets separation, but he’s slammed by a Holtzman elbow as he does. Holtzman hits another trip with 30 seconds remaining and begins to land his best ground strikes of the bout, hammerfists, forearms and elbow strikes to Dober’s face.

Round 3

Holtzman clips Dober with a hard right hook, but Dober walks straight forward to snap back Holtzman’s head with a straight left. Dober scores a trip takedown inside the first minute and looks to jump on Holtzman’s back as they stand; Holtzman turns around the pushes Dober against the fence, where both men land bruising punches. Dober drives forward again and succeeds in flooring Holtzman a few feet away from the cage. With three minutes left, Dober leans right to left across Holtzman’s body in half guard. Holtzman tries to bump and sweep, can’t flip Dober and instead grabs for a kimura. Dober denies the sub attempt, gets pushed back to full guard for a few seconds and then steps back to half guard. Holtzman works his way backward to the fence, then back to his feet just under the 2:00 mark. Holtzman’s face is covered with blood, and referee Dean wants the cageside physician to have a look. The doctor wipes away the blood to show Dean the cut; the ref is satisfied and allows the fight to continue. Dober gets back to business with a hard left hook, then dives on Holtzman’s legs again. Holtzman gets dragged to his knees but stands right back up and uses underhooks to fend off Dober’s advances. Dober is tenacious on the takedown attempt and manages to bring Holtzman to the ground one last time before the clock runs out.

Nina Ansaroff vs. Justine Kish

Round 1

Ansaroff connects with a pair of hard punches as Kish tries to blitz in the opening seconds of the bout. They fight back to the center, where Ansaroff gets a thumb in her right eye from Kish’s outstretched hand. Referee Chris Tognoni pauses the action and calls in the doctor to check on Ansaroff, who seems incapable of opening the eye but is cleared to resume nonetheless. Ansaroff connects with another left hook, a push kick to the body and another left. Kish keeps pushing forward, tries to slow the action by grabbing Ansaroff’s leg. Kish’s takedown attempt fails but she manages to catch Ansaroff with a hook on the break. Ansaroff resumes her body-kicking, now midway through the round, and she fends off Kish with a stiff jab. Again, Kish refuses to slow down and charges forward to slug Ansaroff with a left hook. Kish takes another kick to the body but catches the next one and trips Ansaroff to the floor. Kish stands over her prone opponent and kicks at her legs until Ansaroff is able to post and jump up. Ansaroff puts another kick in Kish’s breadbasket, and Kish is showing redness on the body as they enter the final minute of round one. Ansaroff does well with counterstriking down the stretch, making Kish pay with punches when she tries to close the gap.

Round 2

Kish grabs for the legs of Ansaroff, who spins free of the takedown attempt and pops Kish with a right hand as they separate. Kish whiffs on a leg kick, eats a jab and a short left hook, then takes a few more kicks to the body as Ansaroff slides backward. Ansaroff absorbs a leg kick to slug back with a right hook. The next left hook from Ansaroff seems to stun Kish, who staggers backward and gets drilled with a spinning kick to the body. Kish recovers quickly but looks a little more tentative now, no longer pressuring Ansaroff as she has through the first seven minutes. A hard right hand over the top from Ansaroff is followed by a hook on the other side. Kish finally gets hold of Ansaroff and drags her to the ground with a head-and-arm throw. Kish lands in side control but winds up in Ansaroff’s half guard after a scramble. With 30 seconds left, Kish is looking for an Americana on Ansaroff’s right arm, but Ansaroff pulls the limb free and ends the round trying to scramble up.

Round 3

Ansaroff lands a leg kick off her back foot and sprawls on an early takedown attempt. Kish keeps charging at Ansaroff and has her back taken on the feet, and now it’s Ansaroff hitting a trip takedown in the center of the cage. Kish tries a guillotine as she falls to her back but quickly releases in favor of throwing elbows from underneath. Referee Tognoni tells the strawweights to “stay busy” as the fight on the floor; Kish obliges by throwing up her legs, looking for a triangle or armbar, but Ansaroff snuffs it out. Ansaroff passes to side control but Kish escapes to her feet in the transition, and they’re back on their feet with half a round remaining. Kish tries a single-leg on the fence, releases and slugs Ansaroff with a hard overhand right before shoving her against the fence again. Ansaroff looks exhausted as she breaks loose, and Kish capitalizes by running her to the ground with a single in the center. Kish passes to full mount with 65 seconds remaining, then takes the back as Ansaroff rolls over. Ansaroff buries her chin and tries to peel away Kish’s hooks to escape; she succeeds and twists around to take top position, riding out the final 20 seconds in Kish’s guard.

Alex Morono vs. Kyle Noke

Round 1

Noke puts a switch kick on Morono in the opening seconds, then dodges a big right hand from the youngster. Morono whiffs on a spinning backfist, charges at Noke again and gets another kick to the gut. A spinning kick from Morono lands hard on Noke’s right glove, pinned to his face, but the Australian shrugs it off. Both guys are swinging hard two minutes into the round, but neither is finding the target with the homerun shots. Morono opts to change it up and pins Noke against the fence with underhooks, his head underneath Noke’s chin. They separate with 2:20 on the clock and Noke catches Morono leaning with a right hand on the jaw. Morono is staying active with his strikes but not being very accurate. Still, he manages to find Noke’s jaw with a hard right hand inside the last 90 seconds. The action slows in the final minute of the first frame, with Morono bouncing on his toes just out of range, looking to attack with spinning kicks. Noke sticks to the outside and dodges the newcomer’s shots until the horn sounds.

Round 2

Noke comes out for the second period pawing at his bloodied nose, while Morono lands a kick to the body, still light on his toes. More body kicks score for Morono, and now a jab lands on Noke’s busted nose, prompting the Aussie to wipe at it again. Noke sidesteps a pair of punches, leaving Morono running against the fence. Noke slips throwing a kick and takes another jab on the nose as he gets back to his feet. Morono misses with his follow-up shots, wild right hands which pull up short against the larger man. Noke clinches up near the fence, spins to a rear waistlock and jumps on Morono’s back. Morono leans toward the ground and slips out the back, shaking Noke to the ground. Now it’s Morono trying to attach himself to Noke’s back, and Noke escapes out the back door. Noke steps over to full mount, but Morono drops back to attack his legs, forcing Noke back to half guard. Morono reclaims full guard with one minute remaining but takes an elbow to the face. Noke postures up to drop elbows on the American’s body and briefly looks to frame up a D’arce choke. Noke passes back to side control in the last 10 seconds of the round.

Round 3

Morono looks to be the fresher fighter as the final round begins, but Noke’s corner has successfully stopped the bleeding from his nose. Morono takes a leg kick, sticks a jab and comes over the top with a right hand which bounces off Noke’s arm. Ninety seconds in, Noke’s nose is leaking again, blood dripping down into his open mouth. Morono lands a wide right hook, sticks a jab on the nose again, but he’s breathing heavy as he walks forward on the banged-up veteran. Noke quickly reclaims some ground with a jab, a body kick. Morono glances up at the clock, takes a kick on his right forearm and gets taken down by Noke with 50 seconds on the clock. Morono throws up an armbar and it looks deep; Morono is wrenching the arm with all his might, but they’re in an awkward position near the fence and he can’t quite get the space he needs to force the submission. Noke pulls the arm loose just before the final horn to finish the fight on top.

Masanori Kanehara vs. Michael McDonald

Round 1

McDonald’s first punch of the fight is a blasting right hand over the top of a Kanehara kick. Kanehara shoots for a double-leg on the fence and gets caught in a guillotine as he completes the takedown. McDonald slaps on a body triangle from underneath and continues to squeeze the choke, but Kanehara gives the thumbs-up to referee Mario Yamasaki. Still caught in what is now a loose headlock, Kanehara postures up to drive elbows into McDonald’s legs. Kanehara frees his head and works to pass guard while continuing to throw elbows and punches to McDonald’s legs and body. Midway through the round, Kanehara steps over to full mount and lays a forearm across McDonald’s throat to try and get him to release the headlock. McDonald pushes his opponent out of full mount, and now Kanehara triangles the American’s legs to maintain top control. McDonald’s left arm is trapped behind his body, allowing Kanehara to land right hands to the face in the final minute. “Mayday” frees the limb and tries another guillotine as time runs out, but there’s nothing to it.

Round 2

Kanehara sticks a hard jab to open round two, then takes a right hand on the temple. The former Sengoku champ changes levels and once again floors McDonald with ease, his second takedown of the fight after his first gave him top control for nearly the entire opening round. Kanehara loops his left arm around McDonald’s head and passes to full mount; he’s got the arm-triangle choke setup, but he’s blocked by the fence on McDonald’s left side. Nonetheless, Kanehara is slowly advancing to side control on the other side, looking to finish the choke. In a flash, McDonald kicks off the cage, slips loose of the choke from underneath, then slides around to take the kneeling Kanehara’s back. McDonald slaps on a rear-naked choke, and this is very deep. Kanehara struggles for a moment, but the choke is clear across his throat and he’s forced to submit. The returning Michael McDonald produces an incredible, come-from-behind victory out of nowhere.

Tony Sims vs. Abel Trujillo

Round 1

After a tentative opening minute, Sims connects with a hard right hand, circles away and catches the incoming Trujillo with another. Trujillo attempts to step into the pocket again and gets dinged with the right. Trujillo finally manages to get inside and shoots a double-leg against the fence. Sims fends it off, then denies the single-leg attempt behind it to separate from “Killa.” Now it’s Sims’ turn to shoot for a takedown, and he manages to slam Trujillo to the floor. As they hit the deck, Trujillo snatches up a high guillotine choke and flips Sims over the top. He traps Sims’ left arm with his legs, sits up to crank the choke and forces a quick tap.

Diego Brandao vs. Brian Ortega

Round 1

Brandao nearly falls down after delivering a hard chop to Ortega’s lead leg, but he keeps his balance to land another. The Brazilian backs up Ortega with a hard right hand, then shoves him against the fence. Ortega tries a flying armbar, defended by Brandao, who socks Ortega with a couple punches on their way back up. Another sizzling right hook from Brandao tags the American as Ortega comes in to clinch. Brandao reverses and trips Ortega to the ground, where Ortega throws up a body triangle from his back. Brandao decks his man with a couple hard elbows to the face before standing up and allowing Ortega to do the same. Ortega wheels up with a kick to the body, and Brandao responds with a pair of punches over the top. A straight right-left hook scores for Brandao, who’s throwing with a ton of power here in the opening frame. Some stiff jabs from Ortega have opened up a small cut beneath Brandao’s right eye, but the Brazilian continues to land at a higher clip as they fight into the final minute. Ortega lays a kick across Brandao’s body, sticks a jab and makes him miss with a left hand.

Round 2

Brandao presses forward to start the round and gets frustrated with Ortega’s backpedaling, throwing up his arms to invite the American to strike. A left hook to the body and an overhand right upstairs connect for Brandao, who continues to walk forward on Ortega, albeit with less volume. Ortega misses with a pair of jabs, gets clipped with a left hook. Brandao sticks a jab, misses the overhand right behind it. Brandao goes body-head again midway through the round; Ortega responds with a jab and a body shot of his own. Brandao counters Ortega’s next combo with a lovely right hook, then cuts off an uppercut with a right straight. Ortega sticks a straight punch on Brandao’s body, gets knocked backward with a three-piece combination and eats a left at the end. Brandao continues to turn Ortega’s head with hard right hands, but now right-handed jabs from Ortega have marked up Brandao under the left eye.

Round 3

Brandao comes out firing and snuffs out a takedown attempt, forcing Ortega to his back in the center of the cage. Brandao allows his man to stand, but Ortega comes right back to clinch and pulls guard again. The featherweights scramble up again, now one minute into the final frame. Ortega marches forward and wraps up Brandao’s neck in an anaconda choke setup, then drops to the ground. Ortega moves to full mount and switches to a guillotine, but when Brandao begins to free his head, Ortega switches to a triangle choke. Brandao stands up and tries to step over Ortega’s head, but the choke is deep and the Brazilian is forced to submit.

Lorenz Larkin vs. Albert Tumenov

Round 1

Larkin opens up with a leg kick which Tumenov tries to grab hold of but cannot. “Da Monsoon” pushes Tumenov backward with a few hard jabs, but Tumenov counters Larkin’s next low kick with a straight right. Tumenov tries to repeat the counter but Larkin dips off to the side after his next kick. Larkin lands another low chop, catches a Tumenov kick under his left arm but can’t counter before the Russian yanks back the leg. It’s all leg kicks from Larkin as he moves around the edge of the cage in the first half of the round. Suddenly, Tumenov flurries forward and clocks Larkin with three or four punches in rapid succession. Larkin dashes away and resets to resume his leg-kicking, which has already marked up Tumenov’s left leg with 90 seconds remaining in round one. Larkin whiffs on an uppercut, gets a left hook counter on the nose. Tumenov starts limping after a few more hard kicks to his lead leg, but he continues to walk after Larkin to the end of the round.

Round 2

Tumenov presses the action at the start of the frame, again walking Larkin toward the fence with punching combinations. Larkin lands a couple more leg kicks but gets his head snapped back with an uppercut. A low kick-left straight from Larkin is answered by a body-head combo from Tumenov. Halfway through the round, Tumenov closes in on Larkin near the fence and rips a pair of left hooks to the American’s body. Another leg kick from Larkin forces Tumenov to switch to southpaw stance, but Larkin continues to attack the now-rear left leg. More heavy body shots score for Tumenov, but Larkin strikes back with a straight shot upstairs. Tumenov, now back in orthodox stance, checks a leg kick and then goes high with a kick to Larkin’s face. Tumenov checks another kick, digs into Larkin’s body with a right hook and then tags him with a left to the head. Tumenov’s hands are taking over in the final minute of the round, but Larkin continues to score with leg kicks.

Round 3

Tumenov presses forward as the final round begins, once again walking Larkin toward the fence. Larkin lands a leg kick, eats a jab from the Russian and gets countered with a right hand on his next kick attempt. Larkin tries a few spinning kicks to the lead leg of Tumenov and connects after a few attempts. Two minutes into the final round, it’s Larkin coming forward, sniping at Tumenov with jabs. Tumenov reverses the momentum and steps toward Larkin with another hard left to the body. Tumenov dodges a low kick, puts another left hand on Larkin’s liver. Straight right scores for Tumenov but Larkin eats it and steps into the pocket with a standing elbow strike. Inside the final minute, Larkin charges forward with a double-leg attempt on the fence. Tumenov defends the shot, spins Larkin around and tries a single. Larkin fends off the last-ditch shot and pops Tumenov with a right hand on the break as time runs out.

Andrei Arlovski vs. Stipe Miocic

Round 1

Arlovski opens with a few oblique kicks and slides backward as Miocic flicks out jabs. Miocic keeps walking forward, catches Arlovski near the fence and delivers a short right hand to the temple. The next right hand lands on the Belarusian’s ear and sends Arlovski to his knees. Miocic stands over the kneeling Arlovski and unloads with three or four more punches before referee Herb Dean steps in to call a stop to the bout. The stoppage looks a tad quick, but Arlovski isn’t protesting. Miocic, meanwhile, screams at the cageside UFC brass, calling for a shot at the heavyweight title.

UFC Welterweight Title Fight: Robbie Lawler vs. Carlos Condit

Round 1

Referee John McCarthy is the third man in the cage for tonight’s 170-pound title bout, with judges Derek Cleary, Chris Lee and Tony Weeks scoring at cageside. Condit cuts angles around the outside, his back near the fence in the opening minute, while southpaw Lawler presses out from the center of the cage. Condit lands a few leg kicks in an otherwise inactive first 60 seconds. Lawler steps inside and gets tagged with a straight right, but he zaps Condit back with a pair of hard hooks. The next right hand from Condit sends Lawler to his knees, but the champ jumps right back to his feet and gives Condit a big smile. Condit scores with a clinch knee, sends a right high kick off Lawler’s arms. The welterweights circle back to the center, now midway through the opening round, and Condit tags Lawler with a short left hook in the pocket. Now it’s Condit on the advance, forcing Lawler to fight defensively by firing off fast, diverse combinations of punches, kicks and elbows. A left hook connects for Condit, then a follow-up right over the top. Leg kicks score down the stretch for Condit, as well as a hard kick to Lawler’s midsection.

Round 2

Lawler presses forward and puts a kick on Condit’s body, then blocks a right high kick from the challenger. Condit snipes with a left hook and dips out of the pocket before Lawler can retaliate. Lawler, still trying to navigate the range, misses with a front kick up the center. Condit steps into the pocket again and gets swept out by a fast pair of hooks from the champ. Suddenly, Lawler floors Condit with a counter right uppercut on the chin, and the “Natural Born Killer” hits the deck. Condit pulls Lawler into his guard and tries to lock down the champion’s head and arms as he recovers on his back. Lawler stands and referee McCarthy orders Condit back to his feet inside the two-minute mark. Condit seems to have shaken the cobwebs as he comes back at Lawler throwing more kicks. Lawler continues to block the high shots and is checking the majority of Condit’s leg kicks. Condit remains the busier fighter in the final minute, delivering a hard uppercut at the end of the round but eating a right-handed counter on the break.

Round 3

Condit keeps the kicks coming through the first minute of the round, continuing to hold Lawler outside striking range as they circle the cage. Lawler catches Condit standing in the pocket and sweeps him back out with a big right hand. Condit misses on a kick and eats a standing elbow in close quarters. The kicks are still flowing from Condit, the majority missing or being blocked, but nonetheless forcing Lawler to the outside. Lawler catches a kick and tries to slug down the center; the punch misses, but “Ruthless” gives Condit a chop on the plant leg before releasing. Condit closes the gap and presses Lawler against the cage to deliver a pair of clinch knees. Lawler spins him around and briefly considers a takedown, then lets go and resumes circling. Condit closes out the round with more kicks, including a front kick to Lawler’s midsection just before the horn.

Round 4

Condit attacks Lawler’s lead leg with a hard kick, then sidesteps when the champ fires off a big left hand. Lawler finds the mark with a counter left on the next kick, but it’s only a single shot and then he’s back on the defensive as Condit amps up the volume again. An inside leg kick briefly drops Lawler to a knee, but he comes back up and walks forward to deck Condit with a straight left. Condit bounces off the fence and slugs back with a right hand. Lawler slips throwing a left high kick and takes a knee to the body as he stands up again. Hard, straight punches score for Condit now, followed by a whipping kick that lands flush on Lawler’s right flank. Lawler is cut and swollen on the right side of his forehead, and now he’s forced into a defensive shell as Condit attacks with a flurry of knees and punches. Lawler wobbles backward to the fence and grins, telling Condit to bring it. Condit obliges and attacks with more knees, spinning kicks, an uppercut and a right cross. Lawler tries to swing back with a right-handed haymaker but can’t find the mark, and this one will go to the fifth and final round.

Round 5

Condit uses front kicks to try and keep the charging Lawler out of range, but Lawler barges through them and tries to corner the challenger on the fence. Lawler scores with a leg kick, then a left hand over the top, but Condit circles off the fence and gets some space in the middle of the cage. A straight left-overhand right tags Condit, who angles off and then comes back to attack Lawler with slashing elbows and a spinning backfist. The welterweights circle in the center with just over three minutes on the clock. Condit lands a left uppercut, a right hook, then avoids a big left. Lawler just keeps coming, again backing up Condit to the fence but unable to keep him there. Condit lights up the champ with a four-punch combination but has to slow his roll when Lawler swings back with a murderous left. Condit scores with a clinch knee, then gets knocked backward by a big right hand. Lawler is coming on strong with 90 seconds left, rocking Condit’s head back and forth with lefts and rights. Condit stays standing, stumbling near the fence, and Lawler unloads with everything he has, throwing from the waist. Just when it looks like Condit may be finished, he comes off the fence and makes Lawler eat a blistering right hand. A left hook, a right straight connect for Condit as they go toe-to-toe in the middle of the cage. Lawler rocks Condit again with moments left to go, but Condit hangs on to hear the final horn, ending a truly astonishing final round in which Lawler nearly erased all of Condit’s work from the prior 20 minutes.
