Felipe Arantes vs. Antonio Carvalho
Round 1
Carvalho catches Arantes slipping with a high kick and follows the Brazilian down to the ground. Carvalho’s works to half-guard on Arantes’ left side and “Sertanejo” shrimps to defend and stand. Just as he does, Carvalho drags him back down, hooking a leg and using a loose headlock. After nearly securing Arantes’ back in a scramble, Carvalho grabs the front headlock again and knees as Arantes stands back up. A couple clean shot get through before Arantes drives forward on a takedown, only to be stifled and mounted by Carvalho. It’s a bad situation for Arantes as Carvalho picks his punches on top, but Sertanejo squirms out and gets to his feet, much to the delight of the Rio crowd. Arantes sticks a stiff jab and a winding right, blocks a head kick from Carvalho and returns fire down low. Arantes is the one moving forward, finding his range and making Carvalho look increasingly tentative as the round enters its last minute. A leaping knee finds its mark but allows Carvalho to latch on to Arantes’ leg. Arantes stays up and dodges kicks from Carvalho in the last seconds.

Jordan Breen scores the round 10-9 Carvalho
TJ De Santis scores the round 10-9 Carvalho
Chris Nelson scores the round 10-9 Carvalho

Round 2
The fighters are eager to touch gloves and start round two but ref Leon Roberts twice pushes them back. When they get underway, Carvalho offers a few kicks before he’s forced to cover up by a pair of aggressive Arantes combos. Arantes keeps blocking the high kicks, though one finds him slipping backwards. A one-two finds the jaw of Carvalho, who’s offering single strikes as the featherweights move cautiously around the perimeter. Arantes wades in to tie up and Carvalho instantly reverses him into the fence, shoulder-shrugging the Brazilian’s face and dropping for a double-leg. Arantes denies the takedown and goes for one of his own before they break off. Arantes grazes with a hard right, steps in for a knee and stuffs another takedown. Carvalho gets a few good punches off before they break, but Arantes comes right back with a solid combo and a left high kick. A lead hook misses for Arantes, but he steps in behind it and drills a knee to Carvalho’s gut in the clinch. Arantes finishes with a pair of straight punches and a leg kick, then ducks a high kick against the fence.

Jordan Breen scores the round 10-9 Arantes
TJ De Santis scores the round 10-9 Arantes
Chris Nelson scores the round 10-9 Arantes

Round 3
Both men are swinging hard as the final frame begins, but it’s the leg kicks landing hardest for both men. Arantes lands a flying kick to the body and Carvalho replies with a right and a leg kick. Carvalho shoots from way out and gets swept under by Arantes, who goes down to Pato’s open guard. Carvalho pulls rubber guard on the left side but quickly abandons it. He’s bleeding from the mouth as Arantes goes wild with punches and elbows, now from the closed guard. The strikes open up a pair of big cuts on his face. Arantes is scooting Carvalho around the center of the cage, trying to strike while the Shooto vet tries to tie up. Two minutes left in the fight and the crowd is erupting with each Arantes strike landed. Carvalho opens his guard and tries to sit up, but Arantes is all over him. Arantes tries to pass and it allows Carvalho to sweep and get to his feet. Arantes walks his man down, picking his shots and stepping out of range of all Carvalho’s offerings. Now Carvalho moves forward, only to have his head snapped back by an Arantes right. Leaping knee misses for Carvalho and Arantes gives him another pair of clean punches for the road.

Jordan Breen scores the round 10-9 Arantes (29-28 Arantes)
TJ De Santis scores the round 10-9 Arantes (29-28 Arantes)
Chris Nelson scores the round 10-9 Arantes (29-28 Arantes)

Official result: All three judges score the bout 29-28 for the winner by unanimous decision, Felipe Arantes.

Ricardo Funch vs. Mike Pyle
Round 1
Funch steps backward in the southpaw stance as the orthodox Pyle slings long punches. They tie up in the center and trade digging hooks to the body. They trade low kicks and Funch misses on a lead uppercut, hits the follow-up knee to the body. Pyle comes forward and staggers Funch with a straight right hand. A vicious knee in the Thai plum puts the “Golden Boy” on his seat at the base of the fence and the standing Pyle tees off with punches until referee Mario Yamasaki intervenes. The technical knockout victory goes to Mike Pyle at 1:22 of the opening round.

Michihiro Omigawa vs. Yuri Alcantara
Round 1
Alcantara hits a knee to the body just a second after the featherweights touch gloves and Omigawa steps gingerly away. The judoka hops and tries to get in on one Alcantara’s legs, but the Brazilian is keeping him at bay with speedy knees and punches. Omigawa comes over the top and lands a wild left, misses on a spinning backfist. They’re trading hard shots in the center of the cage now, but it’s Alcantara taking the driver’s seat and backing up his foe with crisper strikes. The southpaw “Marajo” is finding a home for his big left now, then drills Omigawa with a knee in the clinch. A spinning backfist has Omigawa in serious trouble, scrambling for a takedown but instead finding himself on his knees with Alcantara on his back. Hard punches from Alcantara as Omigawa stands, but the Japanese fighter winds up on top as they crash to the floor. Alcantara takes a few short punches but uses his closed guard well to shut down any ground-and-pound. Omigawa lays his forearm across Alcantara’s face and gets to half-guard before being stuffed back. With seconds left in the round, Alcantara slaps on a tight armbar. He straightens it out and rolls Omigawa over, his arm bent at a grotesque angle as the horn sounds. It’s a confusing finish to the round, with Alcantara saying Omigawa tapped, but referee Leon Roberts says the fight will go on. Video replay confirms that there was no clear tap from Omigawa.

Jordan Breen scores the round 10-9 Alcantara
TJ De Santis scores the round 10-9 Alcantara
Chris Nelson scores the round 10-9 Alcantara

Round 2
Omigawa is the aggressor at the start of the second, pushing forward and switching stances as he looks to box and hurls another spinning backfist. Alcantara takes the fight to the floor at will and again finds himself in Omigawa’s guard, open this time. Omigawa shrimps and squirms underneath, but instead of escaping, he finds himself mounted by Alcantara. With both hooks in and their right sides to the fence, Alcantara peppers with short punches, trying to soften up Omigawa for a rear-naked choke. Omigawa fends off the choke, but the strikes that come before and after have him bleeding from the ear or hairline. Omigawa tries a straight armbar from the bottom, can’t get anything going and eats some more elbows. Alcantara continues to slug from his man’s open guard as the round winds down, Omigawa unable to escape from underneath and being denied on his sub attempts.

Jordan Breen scores the round 10-8 Alcantara
TJ De Santis scores the round 10-9 Alcantara
Chris Nelson scores the round 10-9 Alcantara

Round 3
Omigawa lands a left and just dodges a big step-in knee. There’s still a skip in his step as he bounces on his toes in front of the stationary Alcantara. Shot is stuffed by Alcantara and he swings tired punches at Omigawa. Another slow spinning backfist from Omigawa misses. Alcantara lands a single, hard left and shrugs his shoulders at Omigawa as the Yoshida Dojo fighter hops back. Alcantara’s just headhunting, looking for big overhand shots with the last of his energy. Omigawa keeps the volume coming on his weary opponent, trapping Alcantara on the fence and bringing him to the mat behind a level elbow. Alcantara traps down Omigawa’s against the cage and closes up with a tight guard. Omigawa tries to stack and intermittently pound Alcantara’s face; he’ll need something more with 60 seconds to go. Thirty seconds now and it looks like the tired Alcantara will ride this one out. Referee Roberts wants them up and they restart with under 10 seconds to go, just long enough for Alcantara to stifle a takedown and land in full mount.

Jordan Breen scores the round 10-9 Omigawa (29-27 Alcantara)
TJ De Santis scores the round 10-9 Alcantara (30-27 Alcantara)
Chris Nelson scores the round 10-9 Omigawa (29-28 Alcantara)

Official result: The scorecards read 30-27, 29-28 and 30-27, all for the winner by unanimous decision, Yuri Alcantara.

Gabriel Gonzaga vs. Ednaldo Oliveira
Round 1
The Brazilian big men step cautiously, feinting and half-throwing punches. Oliveira looks to flick out a jab and follow through with an overhand right, but nothing’s landing in the first minute. Gonzaga rushes forward with a tentative punch and gets zapped with two in return. A right straight from Oliveira has “Napao” circling backward. Quick left from Gonzaga finds the face of Oliveira and the expat rushes in behind it to plow Oliveira to the ground. Oliveira tries to kneel and stand, and nearly has his back taken in the process. Instead, Gonzaga trips his countryman back down at the base of the fence and works to pass to side-control on Oliveira’s right. Gonzaga slaps on a rear-naked choke with no hooks and flattens out Oliveira. It’s just a few seconds until Oliveira is tapping, the end coming officially at 3:22 of the first round.

Thiago Tavares vs. Sam Stout
Round 1
The lightweights feint in the orthodox stance until Tavares rushes in behind a right hand and gets a waistlock to trip Stout to the floor. Stout tries to use the fence to stand but Tavares has his legs wrapped up and keeps him at the base of the cage. The Brazilian looks to take Stout’s back now, but Stout defends ably and stands, slugging Tavares with a few punches on the way up. Stout catches a kick and socks Tavares with a right straight, and Tavares is soon closing the gap and dragging “Hands of Stone” down again. Stout pops up again and Tavares keeps after another takedown, lifting Stout into the air and slamming him down on his posterior. Halfway through the opening round now and Stout stands again. Tavares grabs a guillotine and jumps guard, only to be rolled over and lose the choke. Tavares grabs for a leg and Stout bails, allowing Tavares back to his feet. Hard right hand comes through for Stout, then a lead uppercut to the body. Tavares comes over the top with a right, gets denied on a double-leg and makes Stout pay with a left hook.

Jordan Breen scores the round 10-9 Tavares
TJ De Santis scores the round 10-9 Tavares
Chris Nelson scores the round 10-9 Tavares

Round 2
The Brazilian and Canadian trade solid right hands in the opening seconds, Stout following up with solid combos in the pocket. He stuffs a takedown and continues chasing Tavares around the cage, rattling off left hooks and uppercuts when he gets close enough. Tavares puts a hard overhand right on Stout and dives for a single-leg, but is rebuffed again. Stout slips and rips with a left to the body, takes a grazing high kick to the face that slices him open near the ear. Tavares is pulling up short on his punches, kept at range by the stiff jab of Stout, but he’s still connecting with some wind-up right hands. Stout nods in acknowledgement of Tavares’ last strike of the round, a thudding outside low kick.

Jordan Breen scores the round 10-9 Stout
TJ De Santis scores the round 10-9 Tavares
Chris Nelson scores the round 10-9 Stout

Round 3
Tavares tags Stout with another hard right hand, but Stout is undeterred, keeping the combos and leg kicks coming. One inside thigh kick lands squarely on Tavares’ cup and the Brazilian goes to the ground in pain. Referee Mario Yamasaki halts the action and Tavares writhes around for a moment before standing to attempt and recover. He does after a few minutes, and he goes for a takedown when they resume, denied by Stout. A hard leg kick lands for Tavares, and a moment later he grabs for another single-leg. Again, Stout shuts it down and they’re back to trading, Tavares lobbing his overhand rights and Stout looking for uppercuts. Stout double-pumps a quick jab in Tavares’ face and the Brazilian replies with a body shot. Stout catches a body kick and slugs with a straight right. Down to the last minute now and Stout’s punches are coming up short as Tavares evades. The double-jab comes through again for the Canadian and he has Tavares out of sorts with a big right hand soon after. Tavares is trying to survive to the final bell as Stout presses with punches, knees. That’s where the bout ends, and it’s off to what’s sure to be a very close decision.

Jordan Breen scores the round 10-9 Stout (29-28 Stout)
TJ De Santis scores the round 10-9 Stout (29-28 Tavares)
Chris Nelson scores the round 10-9 Stout (29-28 Stout)

Official result: All three judges see the bout for the winner by unanimous decision, Thiago Tavares. Scores are not announced.

Edson Barboza vs. Terry Etim
Round 1
Etim is quickly in Barboza’s face with punches and charges in behind it for a takedown. Barboza wants it on the feet and that’s where it stays. Etim snaps off a few hard jabs, has a head kick blocked. He’s stepping away from Barboza’s leg kicks as well, until Etim goes for another takedown. This one comes, but Barboza easily flips Etim over and scrambles back to his feet to deliver some hard leg kicks. The chopping low strikes keep coming as Barboza seems to be finding his range. Etim blocks a whipping high kick and tries another takedown; again Barboza stuffs it. Barboza’s getting busy in the last minute, stringing together combinations in between the hard leg kicks. He finishes off with a turning kick to the body that sends Etim stumbling back.

Jordan Breen scores the round 10-9 Barboza
TJ De Santis scores the round 10-9 Barboza
Chris Nelson scores the round 10-9 Barboza

Round 2
Barboza goes straight back to the leg kicks in round two and they’ve got Etim moving backward momentarily. Etim tries to come forward with a double kick, low and high, but neither lands cleanly. Etim tries to tie up and takes a sharp knee to the gut. Barboza mixes it up with punches to the body now, but he’s sure to keep the punishment coming for Etim’s left leg. A right hook finds Etim’s cheek, followed closely by another leg kick. Etim fires off a combo, landing a good hook to the body and a few low kicks of his own. A takedown goes for Etim with just over 90 seconds left in the round, though Barboza’s back up by the 80-second mark. Barboza lands a gut shot and a right hook, another pair of leg kicks and one to the body before the horn.

Jordan Breen scores the round 10-9 Barboza
TJ De Santis scores the round 10-9 Etim
Chris Nelson scores the round 10-9 Barboza

Round 3
It’s Etim who comes out with a leg kick, but Barboza gives one back and the difference in effective is evident. Etim tries to jump in with a knee and Barboza circles away. More leg kicks from Barboza have Etim shooting a sloppy shot that doesn’t come close. Barboza pivots off his left leg and turns around with a spinning wheel kick, his right heel landing squarely on Etim’s jaw. Etim falls like a tree and referee Dan Miragliotta rushes in to save the unconscious Englishman. Edson Barboza’s spectacular knockout victory comes at 2:02 of the third round.

Erick Silva vs. Carlo Prater
Round 1
Silva squares off in a Machida-esque stance, shifting his head out of the way of Prater’s punches. Prater takes a knee to the body and the in-stepping Silva pushes him to the ground. Prater’s dazed as he absorbs hammerfists, trying to work his way out from beneath the X-Gym product. It’s not happening and referee Mario Yamasaki rescues the veteran from Silva’s punches 29 seconds into the first round. However, ref Yamasaki declares Prater the winner due to disqualification, as a few of Silva’s punches strayed to the back of Prater’s head. The decision, predictably, is not well met by the Rio de Janeiro crowd as Yamasaki defends his call.

Rousimar Palhares vs. Mike Massenzio
Round 1
Massenzio flicks out a jab but it’s the Brazilian landing first with cracking leg kicks. One of them clips Massenzio in the cup and ref Leon Roberts gives him time to recover. Massenzio doesn’t want more than 30 seconds and they’re straight back to it, “Toquinho” rushing in for a takedown behind another strong leg kick. Massenzio doesn’t stay down, but Palhares grabs him again and pulls guard to bring the fight to the floor again. Palhares has a leg in his grasp this time and it’s not looking good for Massenzio. Palhares extends the heel hook and Massenzio is tapping quickly, the submission officially coming at 1:03 of the opening round.

Vitor Belfort vs. Anthony Johnson
Round 1
Johnson swings and misses with a leg kick, pushes Belfort back with a front kick. They get entangled in an exchange and “Rumble” lands on top. He stands and crashes through Belfort’s guard with a big right hand; Vitor closes up guard behind him. Belfort’s controlling Johnson’s right arm, limiting ground-and-pound while getting off some short left hands of his own. Ref Dan Miragliotta wants them back on the feet and Johnson is soon shooting in. Belfort stifles it and uses the fence to stay vertical, socking Johnson in the side of the head while the American digs for a single-leg. Ref Miragliotta splits them again and Johnson swings and misses with a wild overhand punch. Belfort zaps him with a combo and chases Rumble down with punches. The Brazilian, his right eye now badly swollen, grabs at a choke but loses it as he falls back, winding up beneath Johnson on the ground again. Still two minutes to go in the round and Miragliotta breaks them up for a third time. Johnson, throwing the kitchen sink at Belfort, just misses with a whipping head kick. He winds up on his knees, keeping a hand planted to avoid knees, but Belfort turns the corner and takes his foe’s back. Loose body triangle is on for Belfort and he’s tightening it up as he drops heavy punches and elbows. Miragliotta is inches away as Johnson absorbs the damage, offering nothing in return. Belfort switches to a rear-naked choke and within seconds, Johnson is tapping. The HSBC Arena crowd goes berserk for their hometown hero, who wins via submission at 4:49 of the first round.

Jose Aldo vs. Chad Mendes
Round 1
Referee Mario Yamasaki is the third man in the cage for this 145-pound title tilt, with judges Howard Hughes, Marcos Rosales and Chris Watts scoring at cageside. Aldo keeps his gaze lowered during final instructions, and the two touch gloves to begin the scheduled five-round affair. It’s Mendes who lands first with inside leg kicks, four of them to the left knee of the champ. Aldo throws one in return, then another, and they’re hard. Mendes ducks a left hook and shoots a double-leg that’s easily slipped by the champ. Another whipping leg kick crashes into Mendes’ thigh and destabilizes the challenger. He fires one back but it grazes Aldo low. The champ wants to get straight back to business, and when they do, he zaps Mendes with a hard uppercut. Mendes sees another shot blocked and takes another chopping kick. Aldo denies another shot from Mendes and continues stalking his challenger around the cage. Mendes shoots and gets Aldo down this time, but the champ is down for only a split-second. Mendes grabs a rear waistlock on the feet and nearly whips Aldo down, but the Brazilian grabs onto the cage. He’s warned by ref Yamasaki. Mendes is glued to Aldo’s back, kneeing him in the thigh. Aldo turns around and simultaneously raises his left leg, clubbing Mendes with a knee to the face. The wrestler falls straight backwards and Yamasaki waves it off before Aldo can do further damage. Aldo darts out of the cage and into the crowd, where he’s engulfed by a sea of his ecstatic countryman. The knockout comes officially with just one second remaining, 4:59 of the first round.
