UFC 140 Bonuses: Jones, Machida, Mir, ‘Zombie’ Net $75K Apiece

Jon Jones, Lyoto Machida, Frank Mir and Chan Sung Jung each took home $75,000 bonuses Saturday night for their performances at UFC 140.

Main-eventers Jones and Machida shared “Fight of the Night” honors for their light heavyweight championship headliner at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto. Jung (Pictured, file photo) was awarded “Knockout of the Night” for his first-round stoppage of Mark Hominick, while Mir earned “Submission of the Night” for his victory over Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira.

Though reigning champion Jones would eventually turn the tide, it was Machida who was more consistent with his standup early, catching the champion with a counter left hand which briefly buckled the knees of “Bones.” Round two was a different story, however, as Jones was able to find a home for a pair of left hands, the second of which forced Machida to dive for a takedown. Jones caught his foe’s neck and wrenched on a modified standing guillotine against the cage, putting Machida to sleep with 34 seconds remaining the second frame.

Jung wasted no time in dispatching Hominick, tying the official UFC record for fastest knockout. The Canadian lunged forward with a left hook as the bout began, exposing himself to a right straight from Jung. The “Korean Zombie” took one step backward, planted his rear foot and rifled his fist into Hominick’s uncovered ear, dropping the Canadian to the canvas and blasting away with unanswered shots which forced referee Herb Dean to intervene after just seven seconds.

Mir showed great perseverance in his victory over Nogueira, surviving an early scare from the former Pride Fighting Championships heavyweight ace. The Brazilian seemed determined to avenge his 2008 defeat to Mir, snapping a hard jab into the American’s face and following up with a right straight which wobbled the former UFC champion. As Mir drove for a takedown, Nogueira looked to finish with an anaconda choke, but Mir was able to reverse the position brilliantly after a scramble, locking up a kimura. Wrenching the hold, Mir appeared to break the Brazilian’s arm, and referee Dean waved off the bout at 3:38 of round one.
