UFC 125 Bonuses: Four Fighters Take $60K

Clay Guida bounced all the way to the bank.

Guida pocketed a $60,000 “Submission of the Night” bonus after he dispatched former Pride Fighting Championships lightweight titleholder Takanori Gomi with a second-round guillotine choke at UFC 125 “Resolution” on Saturday at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. Gomi tapped out to the choke 4:27 into round two.

Perhaps inching his way into title contention at 155 pounds, Guida has rattled off three consecutive victories, all of them by submission. He kept Gomi spellbound with odd movements and timely strikes, scored with a takedown after absorbing a knee strike and maneuvered into position for the choke.

Meanwhile, UFC lightweight champion Frankie Edgar and top contender Gray Maynard earned matching $60,000 “Fight of the Night” bonuses after their main event ended in a draw after five rounds. Edgar absorbed an inhuman amount of punishment in the first round, survived and gathered himself as the fight moved forward. Two of the three judges scored it 48-46, splitting their decision between champion and challenger. A third ruled it 47-47.

Finally, Jeremy Stephens took home a $60,000 “Knockout of the Night” bonus in wake of his stirring third-round stoppage of Marcus Davis. Stephens appeared to be trailing on the scorecards at the start of round three but leveled Davis with a short right hand. He polished off “The Irish Hand Grenade” with a thudding standing-to-ground punch 2:33 into the third.
