Tybura Claims Heavyweight Title, Puetz Defends 205-Pound Belt at M-1 Challenge 50

If you enjoy events in exotic mountain valleys on the decks of warships, with fireworks for intermissions, and undercards featuring renaissance sword fights, M-1 Global is for you.

In addition to the bizarre, M-1 Challenge 50 “Battle of Neva” offered heavyweight and light heavyweight championship fights in St. Petersburg, Russia, on Friday.

Poland’s Marcin Tybura, who entered the ring to MMA walkout staple “Lose Yourself” by Eminem, had hopes of taking the heavyweight title away from fellow Pole Damian Grabowski.

It wasn’t much of a fight. After a quick takedown, Tybura locked in a deep north-south choke to become the new heavyweight champion. A bout that was scheduled to go five rounds only needed 38 seconds. Tybura remains undefeated at 11-0, while the “Polish Pitbull” drops to 19-2.

Stephan Puetz successfully defended his M-1 Challenge light heavyweight strap against Luis Fernando Mirando in the co-main event.

This one featured plenty of jostling for position between the 205-pounders in the opening frame, which required the referee to restart the action on multiple occasions. The second round opened with Puetz taking the fight to the canvas, softening up his opponent with some hammerfists, and transitioning to the back to secure the rear-naked choke finish. The end came at 4:31 of round two, pushing Puetz’s record to 11-1, while “Fernando Hulk” falls to 12-2.

Daniel Tabera, a Spanish boxing champion, entered the ring 10 years the elder of unbeaten foe Ilya Doderkin. The age difference showed at times, but Tabera ultimately did enough to earn a split verdict.

After a first round of Tabera maintaining control from top position, his cardio seemed to take a hit. In the second, Doderkin was able to score a takedown and land some stiff punches to his opponent. When standing, the Russian was able to gain control from within the clinch to secure the round.

Doderkin landed more solid blows in the final frame that rocked the Spaniard, but much like the opening round, Tabera was able to gain top control for the remainder of the period to clinch the split-decision victory. “The Gladiator” is now 18-5-3, while Doderkin drops 4-1.

Ivan Buchinger was able to squeak out a majority decision victory over Mikhail Malyutin in the opening bout of the main card. The fight went back and forth over the course of 15 minutes, with Malyutin taking Buchinger’s back at one point. In the end, it was Buchinger who got the nod from the judges. “Buki” improves to 27-4, while Malyutin drops to 27-12.
