Tim Sylvia Denied Medical Clearance to Compete at Reality Fighting Event

Former UFC heavyweight champion Tim Sylvia was supposed to headline tonight’s Reality Fighting card at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn.

However, Sylvia has been denied medical clearance by the Mohegan Athletic Unit, and as a result, his bout against Juliano Coutinho will not take place as scheduled.

“Tim Sylvia’s fight tonight (Saturday) at the Mohegan Sun Casino in Connecticut has been canceled,” Monte Cox, Sylvia’s manager, wrote on Facebook. “The Mohegan Commission did not give him medical clearance to compete.”

According to multiple reports, Sylvia tipped the scales at 371 pounds at Friday’s weigh-ins. A picture of Sylvia can be viewed at mixedmartialarts.com.

Although “The Maine-iac” looks obviously overweight, Cox did not have a solid explanation as to why his fighter was not cleared.

“Not 100 [percent] sure... because of his age he had to do a lot of meds at last minute,” Cox wrote. “In all he needed a stress test, MRI, EKG, eye, blood and physical.”

A veteran of 42 professional bouts, the 38-year-old Sylvia has lost his last three fights. He last competed at Fight Nights “Battle of Moscow 13” on Oct. 26, 2013, dropping a unanimous decision to Ruslan Magomedov.

Apparently all the tests ordered by the Mohegan commission have made a significant impact on Sylvia’s bank account, as the fighter wrote on Cox’s Facebook thread that he is “[$2,000] in the hole because of all the [tests] I had to do.”
