Strikeforce Challengers 17 Results and Play-by-Play

Sherdog.com will report from The Pearl at the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas at 9:00 p.m. ET with play-by-play and live results of Strikeforce Challengers 17, headlined by the rubber match between welterweights Roger Bowling and Bobby Voelker.

Sterling Ford vs. Brian McLaughlin
Round 1
Both fighters slowly approach the center of the cage. McLaughlin lands a stinging low kick that echoes through the Pearl. He lands another. They size each other up and McLaughlin has a body kick caught. Ford tries to sweep him but is taken down in the scramble. The ground play ends quickly as Ford springs to his feet. They engage and grapple again, this time with McLaughlin landing on his back. Ford stands over him and holds his right foot. Very little action aside from a right hand that crashes onto McLaughlin's face. After two minutes, McLaughlin sweeps Ford but they scramble apart and back to their feet. McLaughlin tries to pull guard and it's back to where they were; Ford standing over McLaughlin. The crowd is now begging for Winslow to stand them. Ford delivers a stinging right hand. The round ends with the fans restless and annoyed. 10-9 Ford.

Round 2
Low kick by McLaughlin followed by a right jab from Ford starts the round. McLaughlin shoots in for a double leg and scores the takedown. Ford immediately scrambles to his feet but McLaughlin seizes his back. The New Yorker tries to lock on a rear-naked choke but Ford eventually shucks him off and onto the canvas. Ford once again is standing over his foe and holding his feet. McLaughlin eventually tries shooting up but he eats two meager left hands and resumes position. Winslow finally stands them up. McLaughlin is bleeding from the mouth and he seems bothered by it; he keeps pawing at his mouth. Ford is landing good punches now. McLaughlin looks gassed and tries a double leg. He's stuffed and Ford starts peppering him with right hands. McLaughlin keeps wiping and holding his mouth. He eats a hard left/left/right. His eye is a swollen mess and he looks ready to go. 10-9 Ford.

Round 3
The ringside doctors inspect McLaughlin between rounds. He's cleared to continue. McLaughlin is still pawing at his mouth but he delivers a loud, cracking body kick. McLaughlin eats a straight left; his left eye is almost closed. McLaughlin is fighting back but he's stumbling around; he's exhausted. Ford decides not to go in for the kill and instead measures him with some moderate right jabs. McLaughlin shoots in but he's stuffed. After a separation they trade lefts. McLaughlin swings for a home run but misses wildly. Gasping for air and backing away to bide time, McLaughlin again wipes his mouth. With a minute left, Ford eats a right hand. The NY fighter misses badly at a single, and kneels in the center of the cage. He struggles back to his feet, though Ford decides to stay away. 10-9 Ford.

Official scores: Adalaide Byrd and Glenn Trowbridge see it 30-27, while Tony Weeks sees it 29-28 for the winner by unanimous decision, Sterling Ford.

Maka Watson vs. Bill Cooper
Cooper submitted Watson with a second-round rear-naked choke at the 2:39 mark. Technical difficulties at the venue prevented full play-by-play, which will return for the next bout.

Ben Lagman vs. Anthony Smith
Round 1
Smith eats a right hand but it's nothing serious. Smith lands a hard low kick, followed by a hard kick to the ribs. Both men are tentative early on. Smith just misses with a head kick two minutes in. Spinning-back kicks back Smith into the cage but he springs away from further damage. A hard left hand sends his opponent tumbling down and Smith swarms him. He can't finish and they scramble back to their feet. Smith eats a nasty low kick with thirty seconds left. 10-9 Smith.

Round 2
Smith detonates a right hand on Lagman's jaw, ending the fight with a spectacular knockout. The official time is :33 of round two.

Lionel Lanham vs. T.J. Cook
Round 1
Lanham rushes in but misses a sloppy right hand. Cook lands a meager left, right. They separate. Cook lands a glancing overhand right to the top of The Train's head. Lanham shoots in but is stuffed and then thrown down. They scramble when Cook pounces and Lanham sweeps him over. In Cook's guard, they scramble again. Cook eats a stinging right hand on the ground but springs to his feet. They exchange punches on the feet and Lanham is tagged by a left. It looks like he was poked in the right eye because he is grimacing and backing away. Cook swarms him with punches and knees but he can't put Lanham away. Winslow does not stop the action though it's clear Lanham was poked accidentally. They go toe-to-toe for several seconds until Lanham backs away, gassed. Cook pushes ahead but is tagged by a right hand. He's hurt but blasts Lanham with a right hand coming in. Lanham drops and is in bad shape. He tries to drag Cook down but TJ unloads two left hands just before the horn. Winslow stops the fight as Lanham is just about to be put to sleep. The official time is 4:59 of round one.

Ronald Stallings vs. Adlan Amagov
Round 1
Both men limber to start, but not much activity. Side kicks from Amagov are the first notable attack of the bout, but neither man has landed clean or hard through the first 60 seconds. Amagov lands a right straight and a sidekick, the first flush contact of the fight. Amagov is patiently maintaining the center of the cage, cracking Stallings with well-chosen kicks. "The Choir Boy" returns fire with a body kick of his own. An Amagov spinning back kick grazes Stallings. Four outside low kicks lands hard for Amagov. He fakes a spinning back fist, and comes back with a hook kick that sails wide. Amagov is smoothly taking over the bout with his standup skills. Stallings feints and throws a right hand that smacks Amagov, prompting a clinch with 40 seconds to go in the round. The Chechnyan digs for double underhooks and lands knees to the body. Amagov trips Stalling straight into side control, but Stallings scrambles up. Amagov flurries, and tosses Stallings with an uchimata before the buzzer. Impressive stuff from Amagov.

Round 2
Two hard low kicks for Stallings begin the second frame. Amagov throws a front hook kick that tickles Stallings' nose. Stallings jumps in with a hook, and clinches Amagov against the fence, looking for double underhooks. Amagov attempts to step around Stallings' hip for a throw, but can't leverage it. Amagov grips an overhook, and blocks Stallings' knees to the body. Hard right hook inside for the Lloyd Irvin product, who is dirty boxing effectively. Stallings looks for an outside trip, but Amagov bails out, blocking the takedown and scrambling away from Stallings. A punching exchange leads to another clinch, where Stallings blocks an Amagov foot sweep attempt and runs him into the fence once more. Amagov turns him around, and launches him with two consecutive hip throws. Stallings gets up, and gets uchimata'd onto his face, and scrambles for a takedown. He regainshis feet, and pushes Amagov into the fence again after an exciting scramble. Both men charging hard with knees in the clinch, Stallings getting the better of things. Stallings wades in with a big knee and eats a wild flurry from Amagov. Amagov attempts a crescent kick, but devolves into throwing wild flurry that leads to him falling down and giving top position to Stallings, who pounds him before the bell.

Round 3
Amagov is visibly winded to begin the third. Stallings clinches quickly and lands six knees from the clinch, leading the Chechnyan to go for double underhooks. Stallings surprises his foe, changing levels and double-legging him to the mat. Stallings quickly moves to side control and figure-fours the farside arm of Amagov. Stallings tries to use a straight armbar to pass to full mount on Amagov. Amagov blocks the pass, and Stallings goes back to attacking the arm. Amagov is grimacing, and Stallings passes to full mount with three minutes to go in the fight. Amagov escapes out the backdoor, and Stallings nearly grabs an armbar in the scramble, but Amagov quickly stacks him and pulls his arm out. They regain their feet and resume clinching along the fence. After some 60 seconds of inactivity, referee Steve Mazzagatti separates the pair. On the restart, it's wild swinging, with Stallings landing cleaner. A jumping knee from Stallings leads to another clinch with 70 seconds left. Amagov is warned for grabbing the fence three times by Mazzagatti before he separates from Stallings, whiffing with a spinning back fist. Stallings looks for a takedown, and Amagov grabs the fence once more, but escapes being warned. A blocked Amagov outer reap leads to a wild gunfight to end the bout, though neither man lands hard before the horn.

Official scores: Judge Glenn Trowbridge sees it 29-28 for Adlan Amagov, while Mark Smith has it 29-28 for Ronald Stallings. Patricia Morse-Jarman sees it 29-28 for the winner by split decision, Adlan Amagov.

Liz Carmouche vs. Sarah Kaufman
Round 1
Carmouche attacks with punches quickly. Kaufman easily counters, tagging her with crosses and prompting a clinch. Carmouche runs Kaufman into the fence, and they jockey for position along the cage. They pummel back and forth, and Carmouche finally gains double underhooks. However, Kaufman pins her arms and they resume kneeing one another to the body. Carmouche runs Kaufman into the cage, and lands some Chris Leben-esque foot stomps. They trade knees to the body, and Carmouche tries to attack the legs for a takedown, but Kaufman uses the underhooks to block it. Carmouche sidesteps Kaufman and tries for a hip throw, but Kaufman shuts it down and momentarily looks for back control, but Carmouche defends and they resume clinching along the cage. It's been a grueling clinch battle thus far. Short punches for Kaufman land, and they separate with 70 seconds to go in the round. Clean right-hand counter for Kaufman smacks Carmouche in the face. Carmouche is the aggressor, but Kaufman's right cross is picking her off easily. Left hook and a low kick land for Kaufman, who urges Carmouche to attack her. Carmouche lands a right, and Kaufman responses with a series of one-twos that put Carmouche on her heels.

Round 2
They clash right crosses immediately. A follow-up right from Kaufman smacks Carmouche, and prompts a takedown from Carmouche. Kaufman quickly posts up along the fence and stands again. Left hand for Kaufman lands clean. One-two-low kick turns Carmouche around gently. Kaufman pawing with punches now, but not committing to any serious power shots. Kaufman's jab comes to life, doubling up on Carmouche's nose, bloodying it. An increasingly effective jab for Kaufman is dictating the fight on the feet. After a volley of jabs and right crosses, Carmouche clinches up and the fight migrates to the fence again. It's over-unders along the cage as they trade knees to the thigh. Carmouche drops for a takedown, but Kaufman easily shrugs her off and lands a knee to the body. Carmouche ducks a Kaufman jab, but Kaufman shuts down two consecutive shots from Carmouche. Kaufman flattens her hips out on Carmouche, he keeps trying to push for the single and turn the corner. Kaufman stuffs it for a solid 20 seconds before disengaging. The round ends with a bloodied Carmouche on her back, Kaufman kicking her legs from above.

Round 3
Heavy right cross for Kaufman smacks Carmouche. Kaufman standing in the pocket, easily bobbing and weaving, locating her jab. Carmouche runs into a clinch and Kaufman presses her into the fence. Carmouche attempts a trip takedown, but Kaufman takes top position on the way down. The Canadian opts to stand up, however. Kaufman's jab brings the blood back to Carmouche's nose. Carmouche lobbing low kicks, but Kaufman's counterpunches touch her on each kick attempt. Carmouche shoots, Kaufman sprawls again and easily disengages. It's all Kaufman now. More Kaufman jabs land, and Carmouche shoots once more. Kaufman punishes her with hammerfists while sprawling, and stands again. Carmouche tries a leaping punch off the cage, but misses her target. Kaufman stalks Carmouche to the fence, and lands a two-piece. Kaufman attacks Carmouche with punches with one minute to go, but her flurry lands mostly on her foe's arms. Outside low kick for Kaufman scores. Superior technical boxing rears its head again in the final 30 seconds, as Kaufman bobs and weaves around Carmouche, cracking her with precise punches until the horn.

Joe Cason vs. Ovince St. Preux
Round 1
Cason rushes with a right cross that backs up St. Preux. A hard right overhand lands for Cason, but St. Preux lands two quick counters. Cason walks into the pocket, and St. Preux smashes him with a knee to the body, coming off of an errant roundhouse kick to the body. Cason folds in half, reeling in pain. St. Preux dives on him, and the Roufusport product is in a bad way. The former Tennessee Volunteer linebacker is all over Cason, smashing him with punches, while the still immobilized Cason can't defend himself. He flops onto his face and St. Preux rips him with punches until he feebly taps out, prompting referee Kim Winslow to halt the bout. The official time of the impressive stoppage is 1:12 of the first round.

Devin Cole vs. Shawn Jordan
Round 1
The pair trade right hooks. They both paw with their lead hands, Cole orthodox and Jordan standing southpaw. Jordan tries to throw left hook over Cole's probing punches. He can't locate him, so he runs him into the fence and gets double underhooks. Knees to the body land for both fighters. Jordan lands a brilliant hip throw on Cole, and smoothly takes his back, punching away and rolling the Oregonian over. Cole sits up, and is able to turn his hips and claim top position. Jordan tries to scramble, but Cole gets a hold of his torso, and drives him into the fence, looking for a single-leg. Uppercuts for both fighters land inside the clinch. Cole sets up a brilliant outside throw on Jordan, who scrambles up off the mat and breaks away from Cole. Tough wrestling so far from these two heavyweights. Left hook lands for Cole, but Jordan smacks his head up with an uppercut that puts Cole on his heels. The Baton Rouge native runs Cole back into the fence in pursuit of a takedown. Cole turns it around, but can't get Jordan off his feet. They disengage and fire haymakers, neither man landing anything. Just before the horn, Cole launches a front kick which is caught, and Jordan knocks him off balance before the round end.

Round 2
Cole throws a one-two that glances Jordan, but lands a hard knee to punctuate the combination. Left hook-right uppercut lands for Cole. Cole is working an outside striking game now. A right-hand lead and a knee to the body land for the IFL vet. Jordan eats another knee from Cole. Jordan is far less active, but he comes out of nowhere with a Superman punch and a pair of hooks that stumble Cole. Cole responds with a right hand and a double-leg attempt. Cole switches to a single, then back to a double and dumps Jordan to the mat. Cole shucks his legs by and passes to side control. Cole cradles Jordan, kneeing him in the ribs. Jordan turns and attacks Cole's leg, but Cole controls his waist, and actually tries to gutwrench him. Cole trying to cradle Jordan along the fence and land knees. Jordan continues to post his hand on the ground to prevent Cole from kneeing him in the head. Jordan exposes his back, giving Cole a rear waistlock. Cole knees away at the back of his thighs, putting his body weight on Jordan. Cole uses a quarter nelson to put more knees on Jordan's face. Just before the bell, Cole throws a pair of uppercuts between Jordan's legs, in an attempt to awkwardly hit him in the face.

Round 3
The third round begins with a full-out embrace and a glove touch between the heavyweights. Cole lands a stiff right uppercut. Cole lands two punches and a knee to the body. Jordan lunges in with a hook, and eats a short counter from Cole. Cole pawing at Jordan's lead hand, and throwing right-handed power shots whilst doing so. The Oregon native lands another lead knee on a fatigued Jordan. Cole lands two more knees to the guts along the fence. Right-handed power shots continue to land for Cole -- crosses and uppercuts. Cole throws a lead uppercut, and Jordan tags him for it, prompting Cole to look for his first takedown of the round. He drops low for a single, and Jordan looks for a guillotine. He jumps guard, and Cole easily frees himself and sets up in full guard with two minutes to fight. Cole punches to the body, passing to half guard. Jordan tries to hang on to Cole, who hammerfists and elbows him to the ribs. It's all Cole now with 30 seconds left. Right hand lands for Cole. Jordan tries to kick him away, but he re-establishes top position just before the horn.

Roger Bowling vs. Bobby Voelker
Round 1
Heavy low kick by Voelker starts proceedings. Heavy exchange of punches, and Voelker kicks to the body. Bowling responds with a punch, and a low kick of his own. Voelker steps in, and Bowling ducks low, planting a left hook into Voelker's body. Left hook for Bowling glances upstairs. Lead left hooks for Bowling are starting to land, and just as Voelker starts to adjust to them, the Cincinnati native rips into his midsection with a pair of kicks. Loud, slapping low kick from Bowling lands. A clean jab lands for Voelker, but Bowling is undaunted, and lands another left hook, followed by one more body kick. Voelker continues forward as Bowling circles, looking to pop in and out with combinations. Bowling changes levels, runs Voelker against the cage, and gets a brief takedown. Voelker gets back up, but takes a kick to the body that makes him wince. Bowling lands a left hook to follow, but gets poked in the right eye, halting the bout for a moment. They resume, and Bowling catches the Kansas City, Mo., native with a right hook that stuns him. "Relentless" lives up to his nickname, landing a big left hook and attacking Voelker, who punches back, fending him off. Voelker lands a knee at the bell, but it's been Bowling's fight thus far.

Round 2
Voelker immediately chases Bowling to the fence and clinches, but Bowling shrugs him off and attacks with a low kick. Bowling charges into the clinch, throwing Voelker to the mat. Voelker regains his footing, but Bowling pushes him into the fence and knees him in the legs. Inside trip lands for Bowling, who tries to turn Voelker away from the cage. He grapevines Voelker's leg to prevent him from standing, but is locked in position. He breaks the figure-four on Voelker's leg, and looks for a single-leg takedown along the fence. Bowling pulls him off the fence and tries to trip him, but fails. Voelker swims to the Thai clinch, and cracks Bowling with a gruesomely audible knee. Bowling gets stood up, and he's on rollerskates. Voelker smells blood and pounces, smashing Bowling with punches. Bowling dives for the legs, but Voelker separates and smashes him with punches to the head until referee Josh Rosenthal steps in at 2:16 of the second round. Great, sudden comeback by Bobby Voelker.
