Starnes to Headline Wreck MMA ‘Strong and Proud’

“The Ultimate Fighter” Season 3 semi-finalist Kalib Starnes will lock horns with Matt MacGrath in the Wreck MMA “Strong and Proud” main event on Jan. 28 at the Casino Lac-Lemay in Gatineau, Quebec, Canada.

Starnes (Pictured) last appeared at Armageddon Fighting Championships 3 in July, when he submitted Nick Hinchliffe and captured the AFC middleweight crown with a first-round armbar at the Bear Mountain Arena in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. A Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt, the 36-year-old Canadian has delivered 10 of his 11 career victories by knockout, technical knockout or submission. Starnes owns notable wins over UFC middleweight contender Chris Leben and Jason MacDonald.

Spawned by the same Titans MMA camp as former Maximum Fighting Championship light heavyweight titleholder Roger Hollett, MacGrath has secured nearly half (four) of his nine professional wins by submission. A black belt in judo, he has not competed since October, when he snapped a two-fight losing streak with a unanimous decision over Ryan Machan under the Warrior-1 MMA banner. Three of MacGrath’s four defeats have come to UFC veterans: Matt Veach, Claude Patrick and Jonathan Goulet.

In the co-main event, Mark Holst will square off with Markhaile Wedderburn. Holst has vowed to retire following the matchup.

Hovering around the .500 mark, Wedderburn will carry a three-fight losing streak into the bout. He last fought at The Fight Club 11 in September, when he submitted to a second-round armbar from Ryan McGillivray. Holst, meanwhile, returns to the regional circuit following a pair of failed bids inside the UFC’s Octagon. The 26-year-old has not competed since he was victimized by a Paul Sass triangle choke at UFC 120 three months ago.
