Sonnen-Munoz, Evans-Davis Slated for UFC on Fox 2

Chael Sonnen will have to get through Mark Munoz before getting another crack at Anderson Silva.

Two pivotal confrontations have been announced for the UFC’s second network television effort, as the No. 1 contender for both the middleweight and light heavyweight titles will be decided at UFC on Fox 2.

Light heavyweights Phil Davis and Rashad Evans will collide in the evening’s headliner, while Chael Sonnen will scrap with Mark Munoz at middleweight. Expected to take place Jan. 28, UFC on Fox 2 marks the promotion’s inaugural visit to the United Center in Chicago.

Evans and Davis were initially supposed to clash at UFC 133 after Jon Jones withdrew from his planned defense against Evans, but “Mr. Wonderful” also succumbed to injury. Instead, Evans met fellow former light heavyweight champion Tito Ortiz, knocking out the Californian late in round two. The win marked Evans’ third consecutive victory since relinquishing the 205-pound strap in his only loss to-date against Lyoto Machida in 2009.

Davis has yet to taste defeat as a professional, earning wins in each of his nine in-cage appearances. The 2008 NCAA wrestling champion at 197 pounds, Davis has racked up five wins in the UFC to-date. After outpointing Brian Stann in his 2010 Octagon debut, “Mr. Wonderful” bested Alexander Gustafsson, Rodney Wallace and Tim Boetsch to close out the year. Davis's only bout in 2011 also ended in victory, as he outwrestled Antonio Rogerio Nogueira en route to a unanimous decision at Fight Night 24 in March.

Widely regarded as the No. 1 contender for Anderson Silva's middleweight title, Sonnen has won four of his last five, recently returning to competition following a 14-month layoff. The Team Quest product re-entered the cage after serving a suspension from the California State Athletic Commission, submitting Brian Stann at UFC 136 on Oct. 8.

Munoz also rides a hot streak heading into the matchup, as “The Filipino Wrecking Machine” has won four straight. After stopping C.B. Dollaway in March, Munoz outpointed Demian Maia at UFC 131 in June. Most recently, the 33-year-old finished Chris Leben on Nov. 5, besting the durable vet at UFC 138.
