Shark Fights Cancels Irvin-Alexander 2

UFC veterans James Irvin and Houston Alexander will no longer meet in the co-main event of Shark Fights 14.

On Wednesday morning, Sherdog.com reported that Irvin had allegedly tested positive for steroids following a December bout at Tachi Palace Fights 7. The Texas-based promotion announced the removal of the co-headlining bout later in the day, citing Irvin's alleged test results as well as an injury to Alexander.

"Due to Irvin's 'alleged' steroid allegations and an undisclosed injury that Houston Alexander suffered during training, we were forced to pull the bout from the Shark Fights 14 line-up,” said Shark Fights head Brent Medley in a prepared statement.

Shark Fights 14 is scheduled to go down March 11 at Fair Park Coliseum in Lubbock, Texas, and will be headlined by a middleweight scrap between former International Fight League champion Matt Horwich and Danillo Villefort. The show will air live on HDNet.

According to Medley's statement, the promotion is already lining up a new co-headliner for the event and has not given up on promoting the canceled bout down the road.

“We plan to reschedule the long awaited Alexander-Irvin rematch in the near future and are currently wrapping up negotiations for another very compelling Shark Fights 14 co-main event. Details will be announced soon, so stay tuned,” said Medley.

Both known for their knockout power, Irvin and Alexander first met at UFC Fight Night 13 in 2008. In the blink of an eye, Irvin landed a superman punch and followed up with blows that finished the job just eight seconds into the light heavyweight affair. Since that time, both men have been cut by the promotion following consecutive losses.

Alexander most recently bested another UFC exile in Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou at Shark Fights 13 in September. Meanwhile, Irvin fought to a no-contest after landing an illegal knee to his opponent at a January Gladiator Challenge event, which was held at the Elko Indian Colony Gymnasium.
