Sergio Pettis Considers Move to Flyweight After Win Over Matt Hobar at UFC 181

Just 21 years old, Sergio Pettis has already posted a 3-1 mark in the UFC’s bantamweight division.

The Roufusport product earned his latest victory at the expense of Matt Hobar, rallying from a first-round knockdown to capture a unanimous decision victory at UFC 181 on Saturday night. Despite having such success at a relatively young age, Anthony Pettis’ younger brother is already contemplating a major career move.

“It was a good performance, but I think I might go down to 125 after this,” Pettis said in a post-fight interview. “These guys are a lot bigger than me. I’ve been thinking about it for about a year, and I’m going to do a practice cut to see how it goes.”

At 135 pounds, Pettis has consistently faced taller, rangier foes during his Octagon tenure. Hobar was no different, and the Legacy Fighting Championship veteran capitalized early on that advantage early by flooring his foe with a left hook at the outset of the first round.

Pettis quickly regained his senses, however, and gradually asserted himself over the course of the next two frames with crisp counter punches and kicks to give him his 12th victory in 13 professional outings. While Pettis has done well at 135 pounds in the Octagon, he originally made his name as a flyweight prospect, capturing Resurrection Fighting Alliance’s 125-pound belt in 2013.

Although trainer Duke Roufus told Sherdog.com following Pettis’ Octagon debut at UFC 167 that he liked his fighter’s prospects at 135 pounds, it appears that the young talent could be testing the UFC waters at flyweight in the near future.

“I want everyone in that division, whoever the UFC puts in front of me, I’m ready for,” Pettis said.
