‘Rumble’ Doesn't Want ‘Stankass Interim Title,’ Cormier Suggests Bout at UFC 207

Anthony Johnson and UFC President Dana White might not see eye-to-eye on the light heavyweight contender’s next opponent.

Recently, White seemed interested in booking a No. 1 contender bout between Johnson and interim 205-pound champion Jon Jones.

“I’m in a weird place,” White said on the UFC “Unfiltered” podcast. “We saw that fight [between Johnson and Glover Teixeira], and it was a great fight. I’ve still got to talk to [UFC matchmaker] Joe Silva and see what he thinks. But I’m thinking maybe we do Anthony Johnson vs. Jon Jones to see who gets to fight Daniel Cormier.”

On Thursday, Johnson expressed his distaste toward that potential option (online sportsbooks).

“I’m not fighting for a stankass interim title...That thing is worthless,” Johnson wrote on Twitter.

After Johnson scored a first-round knockout of Teixeira at UFC 202, both he and Cormier seemed to agree that a rematch -- Cormier submitted Johnson in their first meeting at UFC 187 -- was the most logical next option. Cormier has repeatedly said that he has no desire to wait for Jones to resolve his issues with USADA.

Jones was pulled from a UFC 200 matchup with “DC” after it was revealed that he tested positive for two estrogen blockers in a pre-fight drug test. Both the Jackson-Wink MMA product and White have recently hinted that Jones’ return could come sooner than expected. However, Jones has yet to appear before the Nevada Athletic Commission, nor has USADA issued any type of statement regarding his status.

Johnson suggested a UFC 205 showdown with Cormier for the promotion’s Madison Square Garden debut on Nov. 12, but the champion shot that down, instead targeting UFC 207 for their rematch. That led to a back-and-forth exchange between the two rivals on social media.

UFC 207 takes place at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on Dec. 30. No bouts have been officially announced for the event, but Cormier’s AKA teammate, Cain Velasquez, is expected to face Fabricio Werdum on the card.
