MacDonald got a nasty cut.
UFC President Dana White announced the news following UFC on Fox 4 on Saturday night, and MacDonald confirmed the development via Twitter.

UFC 152 takes place Sept. 22 at Air Canada Centre in Toronto and will be headlined by a flyweight title showdown between Demetrious Johnson and Joseph Benavidez. No replacement for MacDonald was announced.

MacDonald has won three consecutive bouts since dropping his sophomore UFC effort to Carlos Condit in a competitive contest more than two years ago at UFC 115. MacDonald went on to dominate the always game Nate Diaz and veteran Mike Pyle before doing the same to former Cage Rage British welterweight champ Che Mills in his most recent outing this past April at UFC 145.

Meanwhile, Penn has not competed since announcing his retirement following a bloody, hard-fought loss at the hands of Nick Diaz last October. Prior to the defeat, the former two-division champion fought highly regarded welterweight John Fitch to a majority draw at UFC 127. The 33-year-old holds notable victories over Diego Sanchez, Kenny Florian, Matt Hughes (twice), Renzo Gracie and Caol Uno, among others.
