After an entertaining-but-brief run as welterweight champion, Lawler relinquished the strap to Tyron Woodley at UFC 201, falling to his American Top Team counterpart via first-round knockout on July 30. Prior to that defeat, “Ruthless” defended the title successfully in “Fight of the Year” worthy victories against Carlos Condit and Rory MacDonald.
Cerrone, meanwhile, has gone 3-0 at 170 pounds after losing to Rafael dos Anjos in a lightweight title bid this past December. Most recently, the Jackson-Wink MMA product stopped Rick Story via second-round technical knockout at UFC 202. “Cowboy” has also earned stoppage triumphs over Patrick Cote and Alex Oliveira at welterweight.
