Robbie Lawler Out for 1 Month Due to Thumb Injury, Hoping for UFC 195 Return

Robbie Lawler wants to defend his title at UFC 195. | Dave Mandel/Sherdog.com

The thumb injury that forced Robbie Lawler to withdraw from his title defense against Carlos Condit at UFC 193 will keep him sidelined for approximately one month, according to a report from UFC Tonight.

Lawler’s injury does not require surgery, however, and he is hoping to return at UFC 195, which takes place in Las Vegas on Jan. 2. It is unclear if Condit will remain Lawler’s opponent when the 170-pound champion is ready to return to action. UFC 195 currently does not have a main event, although Joanna Jedrzejczyk is expected to defend her strawweight belt on the card.

As a result of Lawler’s injury, the proposed UFC 195 headliner between Ronda Rousey and Holly Holm was moved to UFC 193. The Nov. 14 event takes place at Etihad Stadium in Melbourne.

Lawler captured welterweight gold with a split-decision victory over Johny Hendricks in a rematch at UFC 181. His first title defense came at UFC 189 on July 11, as he stopped Rory MacDonald via fifth-round technical knockout in a “Fight of the Year” candidate.
