Report: UFC Eyes Las Vegas to Host Weidman-Belfort Middleweight Title Tilt in 2014

The Ultimate Fighting Championship is hoping to book Chris Weidman’s second middleweight title defense in Las Vegas, according to a report from ESPN.com.

ESPN reportedly confirmed the plan on Thursday via text message with UFC CEO and co-owner Lorenzo Fertitta.

"Depending on Chris Weidman, I'd like to do Vegas [in] May or July," Fertitta told ESPN.

UFC President Dana White previously confirmed that Vitor Belfort will receive the next crack at the middleweight title. “The Phenom” produced a perfect record in 2013, knocking out Michael Bisping, Luke Rockhold and Dan Henderson in Brazil.

Although the 36-year-old came under some scrutiny due to his use of testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) this year, Belfort has stood by his use of the treatment. Nevertheless, it remains unclear at this time whether the veteran would receive a therapeutic use exemption (TUE) in Nevada after previously failing a drug test in 2006. Belfort last fought in Nevada in 2011, when he came up short against Anderson Silva in his first attempt to capture the UFC middleweight belt.

Weidman, meanwhile, has never before tasted defeat as a mixed martial artist, rattling off 11 straight victories to begin his career. The 29-year-old knocked out Silva to capture the UFC title this past July and successfully defended his belt against “The Spider” to close out the year, checking a low kick that broke the former champion’s left leg in the second round of their UFC 168 encounter.
