Report: UFC Exec Says Promotion Toronto-Bound Dec. 10

The Ultimate Fighting Championship will reportedly return to Toronto for a second time in 2011.

Citing UFC Chairman and CEO Lorenzo Fertitta, ESPN.com Tuesday reported that UFC 140 will go down Dec. 10 at Toronto’s Air Canada Centre. No bouts have been announced for the event.

In May, UFC Canada Director of Operations Tom Wright stated that Montreal’s Bell Centre could play host to the Dec. 10 event. The reason behind the venue change is currently unknown.

MMA was legalized in Ontario in August 2010, and the UFC made its inaugural trip to the Canadian province in April. In the UFC 129 headliner, welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre defended his belt against Jake Shields at Rogers Centre in Toronto. That event set promotional and North American MMA records for the attendance and live gate, netting 55,724 spectators for a total of nearly $12.1 million.

UFC 140 will not match those numbers, as the Air Canada Centre holds less than 20,000 spectators for basketball and ice hockey. Opened in 1999, the venue is home to both the NHL’s Toronto Maple Leafs and the NBA’s Toronto Raptors.
